Super 8 San Francisco/Union Square Area
Ranked #164 of 230 Hotels in San Francisco
Reviewed 24 April 2014

From the address (Union square) you think you would be on safe ground, but it surprising what a couple of blocks make. The only way I could describe the hotel and area is a doss house. The hotel lobby dark small &dingy. The stairs were never hovered all the time we were there. They wanted to give me a card (room key) in a sleeve with the room number on it plus the name of the hotel . so if you lost them they could be in your room before you even realised . Only one person in the lobby no security. I made him give me one without the number on. The lights in the bathroom kept going on and off. Running a bath the water came out of the shower at the same time soaking everywhere. Toilet seat was peeling. The noise was unbearable at night, was told at 1.30am that it was an ice machine. We moved next day. A few yards from the hotel is a bus stop. Just as we got to it a man sitting in a wheelchair was urinating. A few yards past that was a group of drop outs , they all looked as if they were on drugs. We went to the hotel from a cruise all booked by ADORE CRUISES. I saw the address nr union square and thought that will be ok. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A COUPLE OF BLOOKS MAKE. Breakfast , thin plastic knifes and forks, cheapest paper plates, toast was ok.

Thank you for your detailed response. I will attempt to answer as many things as I can. Our key card sleeves are standard by Super 8 brand with the Wyndham group. I can understand that if you lose your key card it may end up in someone else's hands. 90% of guests prefer to have the hotel logo and room number on it. This is why a multi-billion dollar company would make that a standard. We are located downtown, we are literally across the street from 4-5 star hotels such as the Hilton and Serrano hotels. We have a 24-hour front desk service, so do our neighbors the Orange Village hostel and the Merrakech restaurant. I apologize for any noise from the ice machine and bus stop noises, again we are downtown in the busiest street of San Francisco.

Our room was small but clean and the bed was comfortable. The only disadvantage was that the central heating pipes made it over-warm.The bathroom seemed almost the same size as the room and was light and airy. Unfortunately the fridge did not work and the toilet overflowed but not until our last day. We still thought it was good value for its location alone as it was so convenient for transport and many of the things we came to see were within walking distance. The breakfast was adequate but the breakfast room was way too small. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. A good place to stay if you want to be centrally located.

basically we found our stay very satisfying. we stayed at the super 8 once before and found it great for the money. we like the location. the people at the front desk did not follow through with confirming our return flight and our shuttle to the airport.

TINY rooms and lousy service. The first time I flushed the toilet, it almost overflowed - and would have if I had not shut off the water. The desk said all maintenance and housekeeping was gone, but I could go get a plunger at the front desk. They did say they could move me to a new room, but I had just unpacked. The street outside was loud and the sounds could be heard all night. The "breakfast" was Eggos and a toaster. The 2 choices of cereal were cheap and did not match the labels on the dispensers. Really? Frozen waffles? The Internet was AWFUL. THe desk said if you get disconnected, try a different access point (there were several.) But there were whole days where I could not connect at all, or could not stay connected for more than 5 minutes. I had to use teathering from my cell phone to get decent service. On a positive note, the room did have a mini fridge that I was not expecting, and a nice showerhead. I would NOT recommend this to anyone.

I apologize for your poor stay. I'll look into the wifi, perhaps one of the access points may have gone down. As far as breakfast, these are all the items as required by Super 8 as a franchise. Thank you for your comments.
