“Nice modest sized hotel in San Francisco”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

We stayed at this hotel for a vacation to San Francisco. My wife and I have never been to San Francisco before, and boy did we luck out with this place. It has a fantastic location in a gentrifying location of San Francisco, just 2 blocks from Market Street on 7th avenue. That intersection on Market has a BART station, so it was very easy to get to the hotel by taking the train. It also has a bus stop there, so every day my wife and I could get very easy access to all of San Francisco by bus. There is also a nice CVS on the corner where we could get some light groceries and toiletries.

Keep in mind that this area is in the process of being gentrified, so there are a few construction projects around this area of Market Street. They haven't started in full yet, but it is coming. There are a lot of homeless in this area, but they will probable be pushed farther south as the construction continues.

The hotel itself is really nice, each room themed with a famous San Franciscan artist, but not overwhelmingly so. The beds were very nice and comfortable. Breakfast is provided as a breakfast box, which includes OJ, yogurt, a banana and a croissant which you can bring back to your room. The only complaint I have about this is the yogurt and OJ were always a little on the warm side as these were kept out on the counter since 7am. Otherwise, it was a fantastic experience and we will definitely come back next time we are in San Francisco.

Room Tip: Get a room facing away from 7th street.

Me and my sister stayed for 1 night in these Hotel in SF, just before our return to Italy. We found these Hotel by chance but we were happy about our choice. It was actually the most expansive room we had in 3 weeks of travelling in USA: 171 euro, 232 Us dollars, not for everyone I suppose. The real plus was the lady (I don't remember the name sorry, but she is British with Indian origin). She really help us with the parking and all the information about the City and finally she even booked a night at Yoshi's with George Clinton in concert. Thank you again, you really make the difference.

A one of a kind boutique hotel that celebrates the personalities of many famous San Franciscans with an ambiance that can not be found in any major chain properity.
Great central location staffed by very a warm and friendly group of people.
I have stayed here for many years and would never consider switching to one of the modern high rise cookie cutter hotels. When I visit this unique city, staying here makes me feel a part of it.

Coming from Europe, US 'boutique' hotels always seem a little hit-and-miss…

The Carriage seems to be one of the better located mid-price hotels, with about a five minute walk to the main strip of Market Ave and maybe 15-20 minutes walk to the central shopping/
restaurants’ area. The hotel is in SOMA (South of Market) neighbourhood, which is apparently trendifying and has a good nightlife scene close by. 7th street and the immediate neighbourhood feels a little bleak and a through-route, even on a sunny day, though not unsafe. You’re only one block away from 6th street, which is pretty rough, and to walk back from town at night you apparently need to avoid the potentially dangerous Tenderloin district. The nearest BART station is less than 10 mins walk away and the Caltrain terminus is about 20 minutes away by foot.

The rooms are nice enough – certainly very large, though somewhat oddly decorated in what I guess is supposed to be ‘retro-quirky’ but to my eyes just seems like garish, suspect, taste. Proper and very comfortable double bed with a choice of feather or foam pillows. Bathrooms are a decent size and perfectly adequate, though a little ‘tired’ feeling. Everything is kept nice and clean.

There is no restaurant or even breakfast room, so breakfast comprises a croissant (if you’re lucky), apple, carton of juice and tub of yogurt left in individual breakfast boxes at reception. If this doesn't appeal, then there’s the Sight Glass coffee shop one block down 7th Street, which is probably the best coffee-shop I have ever been in, fantastic coffee, delicious pastries etc, all served in really nice surroundings. (For coffee-lovers, this is absolutely not to be missed.)

The staff at the front-desk staff at the Carriage seem to change every few hours, but they’re perfectly friendly and helpful. Seventh Street is busy and my guess is that the rooms at the front are pretty noisy – so if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room at the back or side.

Worth the c$200 that it seems possible to book a room for? At prevailing US prices, I guess it’s not too bad, but the advertised rate of around £179/$300 really would be too much.

Room Tip: Choose back or side rooms for a quiet night. Avoid rooms near the lift.

Green Features: Choice of towels washed everyday or left for re-use, as with most sensible hotels these days, but that's about it. Bottled water provided in rooms comes with a dodgy-looking pledge to save rainforests. Breakfast boxes involve a lot of waste for very little content.

The Carriage Inn is a good example of how an older and outdated hotel can be rejuvenated by being redesigned as a 'boutique' property. Previously a Best Western franchisee (see the photographs accompanying older reviews), the property has been brought to life with a subtle and inventive refurbishment.

This is not strictly a boutique hotel, in that there is no bar, restaurant or other facilities on site, although a sister property across the street has a restaurant, fitness centre, pool, etc. The bulk of the refurbishment has targeted the rooms, cleverly restyling a faceless corporate hotel as a quirky and individual property.

What's really clever is that whereas a corporate hotel might rip out older fittings (such as the rather dated bathroom fixtures), at the Carriage Inn they've been preserved and refurbished, and the hotel has been restyled to match their retro style. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and decorated in a cosy palette. The furniture is very stylish, suggesting a classic sixties vibe. We enjoyed a larger room with an old electric fireplace (although kudos to the proprietors for preserving the small plaque on the fireplace with instructions for guests on how to light a wood fire).

The sofa, armchair and (most importantly) the vast bed were supremely comfortable, and facing onto the side street we slept soundly. My only complaint was that the air conditioning unit was relatively loud, and left us both very dehydrated come the morning.

Check-in and check-out was very quick and very courteous thanks to the efficient and friendly Mina. Location is excellent, with a combined BART and MUNI station at Civic Center / UN Plaza just three minutes walk away. BART trains run direct from here to/from SFO airport, and most suburban destinations. A few reviewers have commented on the surroundings; I suspect this may reflect more about guests' personal preferences than the hotel itself. Needless to say, this is San Francisco, so understand that you will encounter homeless people at some point during your stay in the city. This is a perfectly safe neighbourhood, and there are several large and busy hotels on the adjacent blocks, so don't be dissuaded by a few negative comments.

Room Tip: Rooms facing Seventh Street are the noisiest, but these are the minority. Rooms on the higher (third...

Green Features: The energy saving light switches are clever, although the hotel continues to depend upon inefficient individual air conditioners in evert room.

I did a lot of research and saw this hotel was recommended by most of those who stayed there. I would also recommend it if you are looking for something in this area. The price was right and the room was very comfortable. I was worried about it being a 'Boutique' hotel, instead of a chain because I've always stayed in chains, but I was very pleased. My only complaint was that the lobby staff didn't seem that knowledgable about the area.
If you are a light sleeper, you might think the A/C was a little loud but it didn't bother me.
The boxed breakfast was a nice addition, like a grab-and-go snack, not a sit down meal. There's a diner across the street though. Overall there wasn't a lot of nice restaurants nearby, you need to go closer to Union Square for that. Also, the area was a little sketchy overall but I didn't feel unsafe. As long as you are used to city-life, it was fine. I'd say it was similar to NYC.
The price was right and we had a great stay.

Hello laurentvg,

Thank you very much for your review of our hotel. We are delighted to hear that you and your family enjoyed our accommodations & the breakfast boxes available. Although by far not the luxurious part of, "The City," SoMA is continually thriving with planned restaurant and cafe openings as well as major corporations that have recently moved their headquarters to SoMA.
