Had a fantastic time in this hotel - staff lovely, hotel rooms, quirky and bright and breezy, so great. Central location and therefore close to everything, ie. trams, trains, taxis' etc. Although walking around was easy too.

Lovely little reception area in the hotel was an ideal meeting place, and lots of people did this and it was lively and fun-filled. Wished we could have stayed much longer...

One point of concern, when asking about the price of breakfast, they only give the 'minimal' amount and then you get loaded with local taxes, tips, etc, etc...and it makes it so much MORE EXPENSIVE. So beware and remember to ask for the final price....

On a recent trip to SF, my friends and I booked at Hotel Carlton for a fun weekend in the city. We walked into the hotel with little to no expectations, as it was just another hotel room to sleep in for the weekend. I was blown away by the genuine and attentive front desk staff! They addressed us by name, inquired about our stay (both about the hotel itself and our daily tourist activities). Any and all requests (ice buckets, additional glassware, etc.) were met with swiftness and a smile. The nightly wine-hour was the liveliest I've seen at a hotel- ever! It was great to see all of the guests interacting with each other, and with hotel staff. What a treat!

I cannot say enough good things about the hotel. Since I've been home, I've told everyone I know that Hotel Carlton is the BEST place to stay while in SF. An affordable spot, with priceless service.

To the staff at Hotel Carlton- Thank you!

Our second stay at this property now under new management, quite enjoyable. All the staff friendly and attentive upon our arrival. I reserved two rooms through orbitz.com for 5 nites on the 4th floor Nos. 404 and 408. Rooms were ready and clean and aptly decorated and bedding on par for 3 -3.5 Stars.
Most of the positive reviews are correct. We had no problems at all with noise, thin walls or heating....extra blankets are available. Odors ...maybe but to food from restaurant below.
Yes the lobby is nice at 5.30...when wine service begins.
Absolutely would return again and fully recommend to travellers looking for hotels in the 3-4 star range

Lovely hotel, good location, great vaule.... no complaints.
Rooms are good size, well equipped and comfortable. We didnt find it cold or noisy at all.
The staff were good fun and all very pleasent. They will provide you with a small map of San Francisco when checking in and mark all the hot spots and places to aviod.
There is a free wine reception every evening (altho we only made it once).
If you are panning on going to San Francisco to sit in a Hotel room for hours then you may want to look at a 5 star hotel to stay in but with so much to do there we found this hotel to fantastic value for money and very comfortable. We didnt eat at the restaurant but it did look and smell very good. Also didnt use the car park as your really dont need a car in San Francisco.

This hotel is great for budget conscious travelers. The rooms are clean, and the price is unbeatable. However, the rooms are also noisy, and ours had an unpleasant odour. The heat is centrally controlled, and doesn't come on until 9:30pm - so it was uncomfortably cold in mid-February. Space heaters are available, and will heat the room well enough. The staff members are great, the parking is expensive, the location is okay, the towels suck. I don't know why this hotel is rated so high. It is only a good choice for budget conscious people.

The Carlton is a brilliant place to stay, home from home at a bargain price and in a great location. We spent 8 nights there in early February (selected as a result of all the rave reviews on TripAdvisor), and were more than delighted. Our room (4th floor) was light, bright and large with smart bathroom and walk in wardrobe. The bed was the most comfortable I've ever experienced in a hotel. Other reviewers talk of thin walls but we didn't notice any of that at all in our room. The lounge area is so welcoming, with open fire, big comfy sofas and the nightly wine tasting. The Asian decor, colours and furnishings are lovely and well thought out. The staff were very helpful (Theo in particular). Just be careful of the opening times of the attached restaurant (Saha); it was fully booked on the 2 evenings we tried to eat there, so is obviously popular. The next door restaurant (Brick) was great value, good food, cosy atmosphere, so give that a visit. No problems at all with the location or area - although we were pretty shocked at the overall number of homeless in the city. We ate breakfast in the Golden Coffee or Chan's Coffee House up the road - very cheap but absolutely fine.

I stayed at Hotel Carlton for four days during my recent visit to San Francisco. I am very pleased with the hotel. The best description for the room was "no frills." It was very clean and had a good view of Sutter Street. The location of the hotel is great. There are 3 bus lines that pass by the hotel. I was able to go to Downtown, Union Square, Chinatown, Japantown and Market Street by bus.
The daily complementary wine service was great. But make sure you get there before 6 PM. The hotel closed down shop on the complementary wine at 6:01 PM.
The walls are thin; I was able to hear my neighbors' conversations and knew when they were getting a phone call, because I could also hear the phone ring. This was a bit annoying.
Over all, Hotel Carlton is a good place to stay and it is a good value.
