“Great Hotel - Unique Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2012

This very old, unique hotel is in a fabulous location and walking distance to many experiences. It was built in the early 1900's but has been kept up quite well. Even the old elevator was interesting for us. Many of the reviews said that the rooms were small and they sure aren't huge but we had adequate space. We were in the best corner room on the top floor so we had it good. We had an old claw tub and the bed was very comfortable. It was quiet - parking was reasonable and we knew our vehicle was in the best place at the valet parked lot. We utilized the full 24-hr parking and took the bus to get around. I would recommend a stay. We missed breakfast (as I was running a marathon) so can't comment on that.

Room Tip: See if you can book a corner suite at the top - beautiful!

This hotel is very close to Union Square, cablecar, BART, and some great restaurants. It's spartan, probably best for those focused on economy, but very clean. Breakfast is included; it's basic and tasty. Apart from the decor, it's not particularly French. I did appreciate how quiet it was. My room was located in the middle of the hotel, so not on the street.

Bathroom was basic, but clean and in good working order. The place is more like an overgrown, average B&B than a hotel.

We stayed in the cozy room (basic one, no bathtub). The room was small but it was extremely quiet with a comfortable bed. We had good night sleeps. It was summer but the ceiling fan was very helpful. The free wireless internet was fast. We didn't worry about room view as we mostly used the room for resting. The whole 4 night stay was relaxing.

The location is great: walking distance to BART station (only 30 minutes to the airport), and walking distance to Chinatown (where we found SF souvenirs and unexpected stuffs). It's also walking distance to the financial district, union square (shopping), Hilton convention center, cable car station, etc.

The free breakfast was sit-down but the service was quick (warm food) and friendly. We only wish it was earlier than 7:30 in order to meet our business schedule.

We stayed at the Cornell hotel de France for 5 nights and although we spent very little time at the hotel as we were exploring beautiful San fran, it is perfectly located and the breakfast is superb! If staying as long as we did I would pay slightly more for a city view room as I felt quite chlaustraphobic after 5 nights of no view but an internal wall. Other than that it was ideal, free wifi, great location and a good price!

Room Tip: Choose a city view room if more than a couple of nights!

I wasn't sure what to expect since the hotel was only 2 blocks from Union Square and a few steps from the Powell cable car line, but my wife and I enjoyed our stay. It was unbelievably quiet; the rooms were clean and bright and the staff was helpful and competent.

This small hotel has an interesting French art deco theme going on, but the staff were very accommodating & location is good for the sightseeing traveler.

The included breakfast was basic, but it was ok.

Overall, we left satisfied.

We traveled to SF for one night and needed a convenient location with the possibility of a good night's sleep. This hotel met our needs and was surprisingly quiet (we had asked for a quiet room and they put us on the first floor). The parking is very reasonable for SF, and the service there at the parking garage was good. Service at the hotel was super frendly, and the breakfast was generous considering the price (free!). We will stay here again. I will even stay here as a single female, it feels safe, and they lock the front door at 10pm and give you a key.

Room Tip: The first floor has a limited number of rooms so there is very little hall traffic. Our room opened...
