Excellent. We especially loved the open-able windows, claw foot tub, breakfast, and charming atmosphere.

Very good location. Near Union Square, but not in the midst of the crowds of tourists.

All in all, it was a great value. Would definitely stay here again.

Dear Benjamin D,

Thank you for your kind words regarding our small
Cornell Hotel , reflection of a quieter and friendlier
past.( the owners arrived in San Francisco in 1966 !).
We shall go to Chattanooga soon to visit a dear friend
that we met at the Cornell where he used to come often.

Warm regards

Cornell Hotel de France reminds me of many of the family-owned hotels I've stayed at in Europe, with its narrow curved stairs, manual-close elevator doors, cozy rooms, and real cooked breakfast. My room faced the airshaft, which was fine by me, as it was quiet. It was small, but comfortable and very clean, including the corners behind the claw foot tub. Breakfast is served in the basement and is not some re-heated packaged food, but a real cooked breakfast with a few options to choose from.

The location is excellent, just a block off Union Square and about a 5 minute walk from Powell BART station.

Dear LeslieSeattle,

We are grateful for your good comments regarding
our small hotel which has been family- owned
since 1966 and may remind the past.
Very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us.
Our elevator is larger than in the small parisian
hotels though...

so glad we found this delightful, charming little hotel in the perfect location. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. Our breakfasts were delicious, with lots of choices, and the women who served us every morning were so welcoming and upbeat - great way to start the day. Beds were very comfortable and the hotel was quiet. We will be telling our friends about our terrific find and if we get back to SF we will definitely stay there again.

This charming hotel reminded us of our recent stay in France. We loved the art work, wall and ceiling painting and the fact that it is small and friendly. The hot, cooked to order breakfast was wonderful as was the close location of the parking - what a boon. The staff is friendly and welcoming right on down to the woman who served us breakfast. We were in town for a family wedding at a big hotel nearby and are so glad we stayed here rather than at that venue.
The location was also just perfect; in the morning we walked to see the sights. You won't be disappointed - comfy beds too.

Room Tip: We opted for a triple to accommodate our daughter too; even though the room fronted Bush St., with t...

A very nice stay. If modern anonymity is what you want, look elsewhere. This is a small hotel, small rooms, wonderfully decorated. The staff is friendly without being in your business. The location is ideal, being a hundred feet from the Powell St cable car. Charming.

The ambiance was so much enhanced by the beautiful and delicate paintings that coat the walls, the ceilings and even the doorways. Absolutely amazing. The "junior suite" was similar to those in France, however, interestingly, the furniture comprising the bedroom and the sitting room must have come from 5 or 6 suites: strange, but comfortable. Only six floors. An very unique early 20th century elevator. On top of that, was the breakfast which was also delicious and quick. Joan was our very capable front desk manager who made every effort to ensure our stay was special. A very convenient location next to the cable cars and financial district. But the gem and most important reason for staying here is the opportunity to dine at their very, very special restaurant - Jeanne D'Arc. See my review for this restaurant.

Room Tip: Most rooms appear to be Queen beds

Dear Bruce J,

Merci beaucoup for your beautiful comments of our small
Cornell Hotel de France... vestige of the past. It is rewarding
to have customers noticing the artistic value of our decors.
Our unique " otis" elevator is older than you think : late
(or not so late) 19th century.. It has been computerised five
years ago and we take good care of " him".
Thank you again,

Gratefully

This charming French boutique hotel was a welcome home away from home. It is in a great location for walking the streets of San Fran or jumping on the cable car. The hotel is authentically French, beautifully decorated, and very well maintained. Breakfasts are delicious. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and welcoming. This is a true treasure among the expensive corporate hotels. I will definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit. Merci Beaucoup!
