“A taste of Europe off Union Square”
Reviewed 2 September 2014

This quaint hotel on Bush, just west of Powell, is family run and contains much more than one would guess from the street view. The rooms are small but very clean and staff are all very helpful. Instead of a self-service breakfast one would expect at a similar property in Paris, one is entitled to a full service cooked breakfast each morning. The most negative thing I can say is that breakfast service does not start until 7:30am, so many business travelers may be precluded from partaking due to early morning meetings. The hotel also has a charming restaurant, and I also would highly recommend it. My wife and I will definitely check availability here for our next visit to San Francisco. An excellent sushi restaurant is essentially next door, and a delightful cafe is on the nearest corner, so one need not go far for good food. The toughest aspect is the slope when one climbs Powell from Sutter, to get up to Bush. Our visit was this past mid-August during a particularly cool period, but San Francisco often is quite temperate in August. Our room did not have AC, but it was not an issue for us during our visit.

Dear John TTT,

We appreciated your kind words regarding our hotel, well written
and describing accurately our small place..... conveniently located
and old fashioned like the owner. We like our trade and do our best
to please our customers. AC is not necessary in San Francisco where
we do not have more than ten very hot days yearly. Sorry for the
slope but if you walk slowly it is a good exercise .

Warm regards

Overall was good. Breakfast was nice and great service. Our only concerns were that water pressure was too low to shower. Wife had to wash hair in sink due to this. Manager said it was to conserve water...

Room Tip: Will likely want an exterior room as we did not have AC.

Dear Russel B

Thank you for taking the time to comment on us.
Even if we have to save water you had a bad answer
from the employee with whom you talked. Lately we
changed a few shower heads which were preventing
a normal flow and your wife would not have this
problem now,

Best regards

This is a great little hotel in a fantastic location! It's a great deal for the location-very reasonably priced. The rooms are on the smaller side, but it's meant to be that way since this is meant to appear like a French hotel. The breakfast is included and tastes very good. We enjoyed our stay here very much!

Stayed here for 4 nights. It was just as described - we booked a cosy room but very comfortable and more than adequate for our stay. Friendly and helpful staff . Would stay again! Location for our touristy needs was superb. Breakfast options and quality was very nice. We also dined at their in-house, French restaurant which we thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend.

The Cornel hotel was clean, friendly and in a excellent location. The rooms were nice and comfortable and they had a full complimentary American breakfast. San Francisco is expensive I found The Cornell to be affordable and a good buy for the money

Charming, comfortable, perfectly located--I rarely use the word "unique," but this lovely little hotel is one of a kind. Travelers, take the reviews seriously: this is a European-style hotel, more like what Americans would term a B&B, with en suite baths. If you want large rooms and 24/7 room service and fitness center and so forth, this is not for you. If you want warm personal service and sparkling rooms with all necessities at hand, near Union Square at the base of Knob Hill, parking in a garage across the street, and a useful corner shop with groceries and liquor, this is for you. Full breakfast (provided) in the Jeanne d'Arc restaurant (wonderful ambience) is made to order from limited but nicely varied options, quickly served and of high quality. And you will pay about half what you would at one of the large, fine downtown hotels. Go! Enjoy!

Room Tip: A grandfather clock chimes in the front through the night--I liked it, my partner not so much! So up...
