“Great value and location with a pleasant atmosphere and staff.”
Reviewed 7 June 2009

We chose the "Cozy Queen" room, which was $100 a night (week night). Our room was on the fifth floor (Matisse-themed). My husband and I have a small bedroom at home, so unlike some others we weren't bothered by the room's dimensions. We fit, along with our two large bags, and we still had room to move around. Everything was clean and tidy.

The room is already a good value, but the free hot breakfast served in the restaurant beneath the hotel is an added bonus for the budget-conscious. It is no continental affair--the combos we were offered included eggs, toast, bacon, fruit and hash browns; pancakes and fruit, or French toast and fruit. You can't really eat breakfast for less than $20 around Union Square, so the breakfast at the Cornell freed up some funds for us to spend on lunch and dinner.

The staff were also helpful--when we left some hanging garments behind, they stored them and made it easy for us to retrieve them a few days later.

Other considerations. The room was very quiet: we neither heard other guests nor heard street sounds. We almost stayed at the Union Square Hotel, but the cable cars pass at all hours over there and can be quite noisy. As for safety, we stayed out late both nights and felt perfectly safe coming back to the hotel. As another traveler pointed out, there is an adult theater two doors down, but there was nothing unseemly (no crowds, no drunks, etc.) about the street even at night

Parking is expensive in San Francisco--try to arrange to rent a car before leaving town (if you are planning on traveling the coast). You don't need it in the city!

I stayed at Cornell previously some five years ago and it was not as nice this time as then. Problems started with breakfast which included either eggs/bacon/toast or French toast. There was only one server weekdays this visit and she was responsible for seating arrivals, taking orders and serving all food. This was an impossible task and made breakfast so frustrating that we went elsewhere at least half the time in spite of breakfast being included. The same woman was, I believe, also one of the cleaning people and despite our having the "privacy" sign clearly on the door handle she repeatedly tapped lightly and then tried to enter the room as early as 9:30AM. Neither of those were problems on our last trip and I am not sure whether some worker was on vacation or what this visit. The price is still a bargain. Just keep in mind that, without AC, rooms on the street like ours were very noisy until the wee hours of the AM and even on cool days/nights we found we had to keep the windows open for comfort.

If you crave a bit of French flair combined with San Francisco history in a great downtown location for an affordable rate, you will not be disappointed! We had a delicious meal at the very atmospheric Jeanne d'Arc restaurant , decorated with tapestries, pieces of armor and hand painted medieval fresco paintings. After a dessert of Grand Marnier souffle to die for, and several glasses of superb French wine, we decided to spend the night. What fun! it was a weekend getaway that transported us back to France and left fond memories.

I loved my stay at the Cornell Hotel de France. The staff was very nice. It was homey and beautiful with all the art on the walls: both hand painted and framed. The morning breakfast was my favorite - with the friendliest servers!!!. Fantastic and safe location. - Loved being blocks away from San Francisco landmarks. I really enjoyed my stay and will definitely be back.

If you like France - and I mean all of France, not just Paris - you will love Cornell Hotel de France in San Francisco. It's the real deal, run by a wonderful French Family who came to San Francisco back in the 60's and over time turned this 1908 6-story Victorian into an authentic French country style hotel and restaurant. In part dedicated to the patron saint of Orleans, Joan of Arc, in part dedicated to French Impressionism, the hotel is decorated with such individual touch and thoughtfulness that you will really feel the wings of time and place when you're there. It will add another exquisite cultural level to what already is a great cultural experience - San Francisco - and they won't charge you an arm and a leg for it. The hotel has all the necessary amenities, a full breakfast is included, and, of course, you have to try the restaurant for dinner, as well! My wife and I and our daughter never stay any place else when we visit San Francisco!!!

A stay at the Cornell Hotel is a tiptoe into another country and another time. I love the feeling of contrast when I step out the front door, back to the hubbub of Bush Street and the cable car turnaround at the base of Powell. Tucked inside the Cornell are its welcoming proprietors, Madame and Monsieur Lambert; an elevator that hearkens back to an earlier century; floors that pay homage to Matisse, Modigliani, and more; and a taste of France, awaiting visitors and locals alike, in the Jeanne d'Arc Restaurant below. For twenty-five years, my father stayed at the Cornell Hotel, befriending its owners and making it his second home in San Francisco. I love that I can return there in my father's stead and be welcomed as family, feeling his presence on every floor.

I stay at Hotel Cornell every trip to SF. It is cozy, wonderfully European, so convenient and the restaurant, well, I have had fantastic meals there. If you're looking for floor to ceiling marble bathrooms etc., this is not the place for you and you'll need a much bigger wallet. But if you are looking for a charming, comfortable, affordable and fantastically located hotel in SF, don't miss Hotel Cornell.
