We chose the "Cozy Queen" room, which was $100 a night (week night). Our room was on the fifth floor (Matisse-themed). My husband and I have a small bedroom at home, so unlike some others we weren't bothered by the room's dimensions. We fit, along with our two large bags, and we still had room to move around. Everything was clean and tidy.
The room is already a good value, but the free hot breakfast served in the restaurant beneath the hotel is an added bonus for the budget-conscious. It is no continental affair--the combos we were offered included eggs, toast, bacon, fruit and hash browns; pancakes and fruit, or French toast and fruit. You can't really eat breakfast for less than $20 around Union Square, so the breakfast at the Cornell freed up some funds for us to spend on lunch and dinner.
The staff were also helpful--when we left some hanging garments behind, they stored them and made it easy for us to retrieve them a few days later.
Other considerations. The room was very quiet: we neither heard other guests nor heard street sounds. We almost stayed at the Union Square Hotel, but the cable cars pass at all hours over there and can be quite noisy. As for safety, we stayed out late both nights and felt perfectly safe coming back to the hotel. As another traveler pointed out, there is an adult theater two doors down, but there was nothing unseemly (no crowds, no drunks, etc.) about the street even at night
Parking is expensive in San Francisco--try to arrange to rent a car before leaving town (if you are planning on traveling the coast). You don't need it in the city!
