“Has it gone down hill?”
Reviewed 2 August 2009

We stayed at the Cornell six years ago and had good memories. This year, it was a four-day tourist visit. We probably won't return. The place is still good but has not kept up with the competition.
Advantages: Great location within a stone's thrown of Union Square; reasonably quiet; clean; decent breakfast included in the moderate price; cozy atmosphere.

Disadvantages: Rooms are small, even the larger ones; showers need to be quick because hot water tends to fade away; breakfast times are very limited and start late on weekends (8:30) if you're eager to get out on the town; no one at the desk in the late evening to the early morning; lighting in the bathroom is awful if you have to shave.

Other, less homey, hotels do better at the above problems for similar costs. Perhaps we were influenced in our opinions by having recently stayed at the Sutton Place in Chicago for about the same charge. There the accommodations were just better in many ways.

I'd still recommend the Cornell, especially for one person on a small budget who wants a central San Francisco location.

The waitress in the breakfast room is delightful.

My wife and I recently stayed at this hotel for four nights. We had a room on the top floor (6th floor) on the Amedeo Modigliani themed floor. The room was spacious, especially by San Francisco standards. The bed exceeded our expectations and we always slept comfortably. We had visited about 14 years ago when we were dating and I thought that $85 was a steep price back then. But, it is well worth the $140 plus per night rate.

We enjoyed our breakfast immensely. The ambiance was genteel, without the stuffiness. And, the food, especially the french toast, was superb. The service was also extraordinary for a hotel in this "class."

I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be close to Union Square without any of the major drawbacks.

I've been going to this Hotel for many years and we love it. The people (staff) are so nice and helpful. The restaurant is first rate and the beds are comfortable. Many of the rooms have these big claw-footed, old fashioned tubs. The lobby is beautiful with lace curtains and beautiful tapestries. It's walking distance of downtown and Chinatown. It comes with breakfast. The cable car is right on the corner.

I live in San Francisco, so it takes a lot to impress me but everything at the Cornell Hotel is impressive: from the staff, to the food, to the atmosphere, and most of all, to the lovely rooms. I needed to vacate my apartment while work was being done. I had been to the restaurant many times but never stayed at the hotel. It was so relaxing and lovely. There are original paintings on the walls and the doors, which are exquisite. Each floor has its own famous painter theme. It was a treat for me. I can only imagine what it's like for people who don't live in San Francisco. Enjoy!

The location of this place is very good.
Also staff is friendly.

What I did not like, was the reminder, that even though, the breakfast was included in the overall hotel rates, the tip was not:
To my opinion, it should be either - or. This is just not a convenient style.

Anyhow, you are not advised to choose this place for the sake of having a breakfast.

WIFI worked well.

since 1998 i fly to san francisco from north carolina 10 times a year for periods of one to
two weeks .i am a sale specialist and work on Union Square . Looking for a place to
stay i end up in a small french hotel located at the corner of Bush/ Powell two blocks
from my place of work .Lucky me.......I could not have made a better choice and for this
past 11 years the Cornell Hotel de France has been my second home .This small clean
hotel has the ambience of a bed and breakfast . It is very confortable .To crown it all
the elegant Restaurant Jeanne d'Arc located in the lower floor is a must because of
the quality of the food &decor . I take all my best customers there & it is a wonderful
discovery for them .Do i have to mention that when the owner Mr. Lambert & his charming wife are having dinner i could not appear without being invited to join them.....

We chose the "Cozy Queen" room, which was $100 a night (week night). Our room was on the fifth floor (Matisse-themed). My husband and I have a small bedroom at home, so unlike some others we weren't bothered by the room's dimensions. We fit, along with our two large bags, and we still had room to move around. Everything was clean and tidy.

The room is already a good value, but the free hot breakfast served in the restaurant beneath the hotel is an added bonus for the budget-conscious. It is no continental affair--the combos we were offered included eggs, toast, bacon, fruit and hash browns; pancakes and fruit, or French toast and fruit. You can't really eat breakfast for less than $20 around Union Square, so the breakfast at the Cornell freed up some funds for us to spend on lunch and dinner.

The staff were also helpful--when we left some hanging garments behind, they stored them and made it easy for us to retrieve them a few days later.

Other considerations. The room was very quiet: we neither heard other guests nor heard street sounds. We almost stayed at the Union Square Hotel, but the cable cars pass at all hours over there and can be quite noisy. As for safety, we stayed out late both nights and felt perfectly safe coming back to the hotel. As another traveler pointed out, there is an adult theater two doors down, but there was nothing unseemly (no crowds, no drunks, etc.) about the street even at night

Parking is expensive in San Francisco--try to arrange to rent a car before leaving town (if you are planning on traveling the coast). You don't need it in the city!
