“Very nice place, but noisy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2014

This is a lovely small hotel in a beautiful part of town, with exquisite views out over the city and the bay. Our third floor room was spacious and comfortable, and had not only had *lots* of power outlets, but the outlets were in full view and did not need to be liberated from lamps or clock radios. A *huge* plus! It also had a white sound machine, the need for which soon became evident: traffic noise from the street, construction (houses nearby are undergoing extensive renovation), garbage trucks, etc. Our room faced south - other exposures may turn out to be much quieter. The buffet breakfast is in a league well above almost all we have seen. Lots of little pastries and breads (no gluten free, alas), cheese, deli meats, hot cereal, wide array of condiments (clotted cream or lemon curd, anyone?), cottage cheese, hard-boiled eggs, and even sheep's milk yogurt!

The staff is friendly and helpful. When we arrived minus luggage in the midst of the Arctic vortex travel chaos, Julio, the hotel's driver, offered to wait for us until it arrived on separate flights nearly two hours later, saying he didn't have another pickup for a while anyway. His patience and kindness were much appreciated.

The neighborhood is flat out gorgeous.

Room Tip: South-facing rooms are very noisy.

The Hotel Drisco is in a beautiful residential neighborhood. The rooms are nicely designed, many of them with wonderful views of the city below. The front desk is smiling and efficient, the breakfast buffet well stocked.
However...there are streetcar sounds all night, and garbage trucks in the morning, as well as other vehicles breaking on the steep hills and then accelerating away. Oh, yes, and construction noises. The hotel is clearly aware of the problem: there is a white noise machine in every room.
Recommended for the deaf.

Room Tip: Try another hotel.

DriscoManager, General Manager at Hotel Drisco, responded to this review, 9 January 2014
Dear Guest,

I was pleased to learn of the many aspects of the stay you enjoyed, but I am concerned to hear of the noise problems you experienced. I think it is probably not a coincidence that a another Trip Advisor reviewer posting today mentioned noise as well, so perhaps there was some sort of construction happening close to the hotel for a brief period recently. We monitor the environment for our guests very closely here and my staff and I are unaware of any recent increase in noise disturbances based on our own observations and guest comments, but you can rest assured that we will investigate to make sure our future guests are not disturbed.

Now, it is certainly true that our 1903 wood-framed structure is not as soundproof as a modern concrete and steel hotel, but we are also located in a quiet residential area away from all bus and streetcar lines. We placed the "Sound+Sleep" white noise machines on the nightstands in the guestrooms because we care deeply about our guests' environment and comfort. Even though most guests do not appear to use them, those that do have told us that they appreciate them a great deal.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, and please feel free to reach out to me personally if you would like to discuss your stay with us in more detail.

Kind Regards,

John Spear

By far the best hotel experience I have had in a very long time. The staff makes this hotel the great place it is. They truly care and go out of their way to make you feel at home and special.
The location is wonderful and has amazing views. The all inclusive concept which includes a wonderful breakfast and wine tastings add to the atmosphere. Both set in a wonderfully cozy dining room. The rooms are we'll appointed, the bedding extremely comfortable. Even my grandsons crib had the highest quality bedding!!! We will never stay anywhere but here while visiting San Francisco! The Hotel has an in room dining option..which after arriving late we chose to do..however we did not want to eat in our suite..the staff opened the breakfast room and served us..Christmas Tree lights ablaze Christmas music playing! Thank You to the wonderful staff.. You all make this hotel so special!

Room Tip: corner suites are so beautiful ask for one looking over the water towards Alcatraz.

We arrived in the midst of a medical emergency, and the staff here were so compassionate, helpful and supportive, we felt part of an extended family. They truly went far beyond the call of duty, for which we sincerely thank them.
The place itself is spacious and comfortable and the attention to detail makes for a wonderful stay. The availability of a car combined with the knowledge of the staff makes getting around easy, and the immediate area makes for intriguing exploration by foot.

Room Tip: The views from the top floor corner room were amazing

The Drisco is a peaceful heaven in a beautiful and quiet part of San Francisco. I understand that it's not for everyone to be so far away from the centre but for us it was just perfect. We loved to stroll around the neighbourhood that we would have otherwise completely missed while it was one of the nicest locations in the city. Staff was perfect! Efficient, nice but also not too formal which is how we like it. They would do anything they could to make the stay as pleasant as possible. When we didn't have enough cash to pay the taxi because the driver had a problem with his creditcard machine, the bell-boy advanced the cash out of his own pocket to solve the problem! It's the kind of hotel where you meet people and interact with other guests because of the atmosphere and the cozy and small spaces. Unfortunately we only spent two nights here and booked the Fairmont for a five night stay later on. Big mistake... We'll be back to spend a week here as soon as we visit California again.

Room Tip: Our room wasn't big so we'd choose to stay in a suite next time. We have seen one and it was...

Hotel Drisco is a nice option if you want something removed from the city hustle and bustle. The hotel is in a residential neighborhood so if you're ok with walking 5 to 10 minutes to the local shops its perfect. Definitely take their recommendations on where to eat or go see a game. They know the city well and we had a great time following their recommendations. Breakfast was delicious-they even have soy milk which was a nice touch and the wine and cheese reception was definitely not skimpy. Overall, what makes this hotel stand out is that every detail has already been thought out beforehand. I mean, they have a whole menu of different types of pillows! Really relaxing but don't know what we would have done with the car if we stayed during the week because of the street parking...

I spent one night at the Hotel Drisco before heading out to Napa. When I called to learn about the hotel and the area, they staff was incredibly helpful and I was not rushed on the phone at all. I made the reservation a few days later, and the lady on the phone remember me and even remember that I would like to reserve a bicycle (free of charge) to bike around the morning I arrived. The quoted rates were actually right on par with rates for other high end hotels in SF. The Hotel Drisco, however, is in a much quieter and classier area of the city. Plus, because they utilize street parking (there is plenty and I parked right across the street), the rate is actually $50+ less than you'd pay somewhere downtown (where parking costs $50+).

When we arrived in the morning, our rooms were ready (ahead of schedule), and John (the manager) greeted us very warmly. He had the bellman carry the bags to our rooms for us and took care of the paperwork quickly. Again, very helpful and kind.

The rooms were very clean and well appointed. My particular room had a queen bed and a nice sitting area. The bathroom was also well sized. Nice touches like free bottles of water and cookies were welcome. The room was not the "city view" room, so the view was to the interior of the hotel. Not a great view, to be honest. The only thing I can say is that the rooms probably need a bit of a facelift. By no means were they dirty or worn out, but they clearly showed some wear and I'd expect the management is ready to do an update. Also, the floors/walls were a little less soundproof than expected. I could hear people/TV talking and hear folks above me walking around. Perhaps that will come with the upgrades soon.

Breakfast was more than expected. An incredible spread of wonderful foods with healthful choices available! The breakfast room was well sized but also felt private. Service was great.

Overall, this is the place that I'd stay in SF on my next trip. I think it provided a great atmosphere and a "home away from home" feeling without being too "close". John and the team are doing a great job, and with a few upgrades, it would be absolutely perfect.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, get a city view. The interior view is not great.
