As a rule, my family and I only stay at chain hotels, however I went against my better judgement and booked the Great Highway Inn for six nights. While our stay was not a disaster, it also was not extraordinary. The proximity to the beach and Golden Gate Park are by far this hotel's biggest virtues. However, be advised in the summer time, the fog rarely burns off at all and the temperature hardly gets above 60, therefore don't expect to be spending any afternoons lying out on the beach. Breakfast was advertised, however we were disappointed to find out upon arrival the extent of their breakfast is coffee and packaged donuts which are hardly fresh or even that appealing to eat. This caused a huge inconvenience for us as there wasn't a Starbucks or small cafe nearby to grab breakfast. The room was adequate. We were given a king/queen suite in which the beds were separated in two different rooms (a huge bonus). However, the room was in desperate need of some TLC. The walls needed a paint job and the carpets were heavily stained in some areas. The bathroom had been recently remodeled, but the two bedrooms needed work. Another disappointment was the fact that the room featured no air. In fact, "Not in Service" was written on the thermostat. While it was 50 degrees outside and we were not looking for AC, it would have been nice to run a fan as the walls are paper thin and you have the luxury of hearing everything in the room to your left, right, top and bottom. We checked out of this hotel after two nights and moved to a hotel in South San Francisco for the same price, but with far more amenities such as a real breakfast, modern rooms and air. Unless you have a specific reason for staying in this neighborhood, I would highly recommend checking out other hotels in different parts of the city.
