Our stay at this hotel was due to participation in Push America's Journey of Hope event. At check-in, we were greeted cheerfully and expertly by Mark, and the process was quick and easy. He also took the time to assure a follow-up reservation we had for our daughter for the next night was also taken care of. We were given all the information we would need for public transportation including the cable cars as well as other attractions. Our room was pleasantly appointed with all we expected. It was clean, the furniture very comfortable, and the usual noise from the air conditioning was absent. I happened to have a follow-up question as we were leaving the facility and talked to Darrin, a very pleasant doorman/porter. He was helpful but most impressive was he remembered me and my family during our whole visit. We had breakfast in the hotel and enjoyed the buffet, it being complete with everything from eggs, sausage & bacon to fresh fruit and cereals, juice and coffee. While all this was above expectations, we found the area of the hotel to be in a less than favorable area with homeless encampments on nearby streets, people with appearances and actions which could lead one to believe they may not be in a safe area, and access via a one way street that if you don't know the location, you may find it difficult to navigate to. And while there is on-site parking for a fee, which compared to other areas is reasonable, don't come and expect to fit a large SUV or other oversize vehicle in the garage. While security seemed very adequate, notices are posted to advise not to leave valuables in vehicles. Over all, we would stay at this hotel again when in San Francisco due to the staff, service, and cleanliness.

Nice hotel. Staff is nice. I am a Gold Member and the person in front of me at the hotel was also a Gold Member and got a free upgrade. I wasn't offered that, so that bothered me. Not sure how they go about picking and choosing. Parking is $42 at the hotel. There is a parking garage next door for half that amount, so I recommend that. The hotel is in a decent area, however there is some riff raff. A few blocks up it gets nicer. Hotels are more expensive as you move up towards the water though, so if you can compromise walking past some ruff street people, then its worth paying a little less. It's still expensive, but still less than other hotels. There was also garbage under my bed and a mans sock.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade.

Gold IHG Rewards Club Members are highly regarded as loyal advocates for our brand and Holiday Inn Civic Center continuously seeks to reciprocate that dedication. We apologize for this momentary setback as well as if you felt you weren't offered a free upgrade. If you would like to discuss this with our Front Office Manager, David Camacho he will ensure you are taken care of. He may be reached at 415-626-6103 or david.camacho@ihg.com.

Being that parking is limited in the middle of bustling downtown San Francisco we do have to charge a comparable rate to guests who need the additional accommodation. However, we apologize if the parking fees were an unexpected expense. We do our best to provide the most value to our guests as our parking lot is secure, permits 24 hour access, and allows in-and-out privileges. Many other local parking facilities enforce limited operating hours and/or no in-and-out benefits, but depending upon your needs with car access they may be a considerable option.

Our Central Market location is in the heart of the very exciting San Francisco changes with culture, entertainment, history, technology and government all coming together along with vibrant new housing and restaurants. We greatly apologize about the garbage under your bed; our Housekeeping Manager has been informed and will ensure this should not happen again. Thank you for your feedback in our continuous efforts to learn from our guest experience. We hope for the opportunity to have you back with us and earn your loyalty once again.

Holiday Inn Civic Center is on the same block of a BART station which make its a convenient place to stay. I would suggest staying at the executive or club floor which have the newer or updated rooms. Balconies has a great view of the classic Ophelia theater. The hotel is also within walking distance to coffee shops and convenience stores but a lot of homeless people in the neighborhood which may make it seem unsafe at nighttime. Rooms are clean, Beds are fairly comfortable and has the traditional holiday inn pillow menu. Overall a decent stay

Location for us was great, just close to the centre and where we wanted to be. Considering how expensive hotels in SF are, this is somewhat a good value. The walls are thin, the first night there was a party next door, after 3 warnings I told the reception to call the police and they did come. I just arrived from 13 hours flight and was woken up too many times.

I couldn't expect much from the hotel so it's not THAT bad. standard holiday inn though our room has a permanent stench that I don't know what.

Some people say the area is dodgy. It is and nearly the rest of SF actually but we didn't experience violence or intimidation that made us scared or feeling unsafe. I parked my rented car on the street for two nights and that was OK though I think it got minor scratch. Parking on the street is free after in the evening.

As I didn't mess up the room that much I didn't ask for room to be cleaned up for about 4 days and they got really worried and very insisting everyday (perhaps they think I was hiding something but I actually save them the trouble of cleaning up).

Very good hotel, clean and courteous staff. Always helpful. Has a small shop inside, who arranged a day trip to Yosemite. The problem is the neighbourhood. There are quite a few poor homeless wandering around. You will feel unsafe to walk during the night, though there are lot of cop cars which are always on watch.

The main reason for the 3 star rating is the area the hotel is in. it's pretty seedy. And a major construction project going on across 8th street. Also, it was so loud at night...not really the fault of the hotel.

I was here for 2 nights on a business trip and the hotel was perfectly adequate for that purpose. The hotel lobby is really nice and the restaurant serves a pretty delicious breakfast. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

My room was clean, which is the most important thing for me. The bed was comfortable, but he pillows were not. There are plenty of pillows, which is nice and I was able to eventually find a configuration with 2 of them to get me through the night.

Room Tip: See if you can get a room away from the the 8th/market intersection, that might help with the noise

So, I booked this one blindly via Priceline. If I had known which hotel I was getting, I probably would have passed on it. It's a nice hotel in terms of comfy beds, clean rooms and nice bathroom. BUT, the area is so bad. It's decent enough during daylight hours, but come night fall, it's super scary. Go two blocks over in the wrong direction and you'd think you were in a war torn country. It's very close to Market Street and that section is filled with seedy motels, XXX clubs and tons of homeless people. There was also a strong police presence all along the area, which made me somewhat comforted, but also alarmed. My husband and I stayed during Valentine's Weekend and romantic is not how I'd describe the place. The last night we were there we ended up in the crossfire of a gang shooting down the street and then in the ensuing madness got lost in a VERY bad area only to be treated with the sight of junkies and hookers hitting us up. Then there is the issue of parking....$42 per night! Crazy SF prices. We also ended up having to pay an extra $42 because of a malfunction with the parking machine. It was such a headache! And the staff were not very helpful in the matter....No, we will never stay here again!

Holiday Inn San Francisco Civic Center is glad to hear we hit the mark with nice accommodations, comfort, and cleanliness. The neighborhood is very diverse and urban, but we are disappointed to hear your experience off property was less than pleasant. There are many projects currently in motion to bring forth a new and improved downtown SF and we hope with the prospect of a restructured community you will give our neighborhood another chance.

We do understand that parking is an additional expense throughout the city of San Francisco, but we do our best to provide the most value to our guests as our parking lot is secure, permits 24 hour access, and allows in-and-out privileges. Many other local parking facilities enforce limited operating hours and/or no in-and-out benefits, but depending upon your needs with car access they may be a considerable option.

We apologize about the parking machine trouble, we have informed our Chief Engineer about the issue, and he is promptly looking into resolving that issue. We appreciate the opportunity to grow from your feedback and hope you will give us another chance to host your stay in San Francisco.
