Holiday Inn Civic Center (San Francisco)
Ranked #122 of 230 Hotels in San Francisco

I must start by saying after reading reviews on this hotel I was very worried what we would get, I have been to San Francisco three times before so did know that this is not the best of areas but having said that we were pleasantly surprised, we had rooms on the eighth floor and didn't notice any noise like other people had said, the room was basic and clean and the reception area very nice, the staff were all very helpful and no problems, on the down side the parking fee of $42 per night was a bit steep but having said that parking in any major city is going to be expensive once we had parked our car up we used public transport as it is the easiest way to get around in San Francisco. Just around the corner from the hotel you can get the F trolley bus $4 all the way down to Fishermans Wharf where you can buy a muni ticket that you can use on all forms of transport to get you around the muni ticket cost $18 for a day ticket $23 for a 3 day ticket or $29 for a weekly ticket. Yes there are a lot of homeless people around, but we didn't fill threatened even in the night. If you are considering going to Alcatraz book on line in advance the tickets sell out very quickly we were there in July and at pier 33 where they sell the tickets there were boards up saying next available trip end of August shame to miss it. A great place to eat is the Cheesecake Factory, you will find this on the 8th floor of Macys department store on Union Square, best steaks, and cakes to die for. Also another good place to eat is Applebee's Restaurant at Fishermans Wharf cheaper than the Cheesecake Factory but food just as nice.

Have to say that the location for starters was very good - central and very close to public transport which was also very cheap by Irish standards. Bedroom was very well appointed, spacious, kept v/clean and with fine big TV and tea/coffee making facilities.
Free internet terminal down near reception - much appreciated. Dined in the restaurant a few times - standard and value v/good. Stayed 5 nights. The staff were very helpful and one chap called David went the extra mile on his mobile phone to find the Amtrack office for me! Can't fault my stay there.

The good:
1) The lobby left the impression we were in for a good experience
2) Breakfast was decent
The bad:
1) Saying $42 is competitive rate still doesn't take away from that is a LOT of money to park a rental vehicle
2) being threatened to bring back the luggage cart when 3 more were outside but locked up is no way to handle check ins
3) it is absolutely unacceptable for there to not be a single microwave available to pop the popcorn we had to walk 2 blocks to get past one of the great "medical" marijuana establishments. I would prefer not to have to take my kids past that. Thanks for no warning.
4) The pool deck is atrocious... so much more could be done. The rotting wood on the planters was a nice touch as well.
5) When I made the reservation with "booking.com" i inputted that there we 2 adults and 2 children. I was offered and option to pay an extra $60 to add breakfast for the entire stay. When I got to the front desk I was told I would receive only 2 passes per day, not 4. This isn't a kids under 12 eat free thing, I used the drop down menus to put in the ages of 14 and 16 of my daughters. I was essentially duped...
6) we had 4 people in the room, I booked 4 people in the room and housekeeping continually gave us 2 towels when room service was done. So we would need to continually ask for more towels.
7) To say the furnishings are minimum 8-10 years old would be a conservative estimate. And if I am told differently they need to find a new supplier that keep them up to date.

I have designed and furnished numerous Holiday Inns, Holiday Inn Express's, Candlewoods, Indigos, etc in my career... Worked directly with IHG. I am surprised this property is in the condition it is in... someone must be getting paid off. I've done Comfort Inns and Best Westerns that would blow this place away... The worst $1000 I have spent in a loooooooong time.

Room Tip: don't stay here

This hotel is very good. Everything is nice and clean. The staff is very service-oriented and gave a lot of advices to us (first time tourists from Denmark).

You should accept some noise from traffic, but you get to be close to public transportation opportunities.

We prepared our kids to see a lot of very rich people in California. Instead the hole family is in shock over the amount of homeless people in this area. The homeless's are walking around like zombies. Hope that America wakes up from the American dream and starts making a country where everybody gets a dissent life - guess that's not something the hotel can make much of a difference.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. The transformation and growth in the Mid-Market area has brought an increased presence of SF agencies to deal with homeless issues both here and throughout the City. Unfortunately, these issues are prevalent and visible throughout the city. Thank you so much for choosing the Holiday Inn Civic Center and we hope to welcome you again for your next visit to San Francisco.

Stayed two nights, booked each night separately. The front staff kindly combined them when I checked in, but might forgot canceling the duplication although he promised. So, I was billed both, two nights stay and another one night stay on the same day.

I tried to contact this hotel regarding this issue via email since I am based in oversea, but could NOT get responses at all, even though reminded a few times and, also, contacted via IHG Guest Relations. (I have GOLD status though..) Finally, I could be contacted with the hotel management TWO weeks after my first contact by just saying "your refund was processed.." without mentioning any apologies for the delay and wrong billing, even after a few FURTHER inquires to IHG Guest Relations.

Very insincere and unprofessional this hotel management looks. Due to construction of hotel building and its location (SF Civic Center), it also makes this hotel's atmosphere and experience worse.

Whatever you have higher status, I do NOT recommend this property if you want to have more than a fair experience of IHG.

Easy enough to drive to, they had garage parking. It was expensive at 40 dollars per day. The man on reception was pleasant and helpful. It was simple to get the street car or bart near by and Union square a short walk away. Homeless people everywhere at night is not what you want when you have a camera around your neck. We were changed to this holiday inn on our itinerary and I did not have a chance to check it out before arriving. Was a bit worried as earphones beside bed. Not needed just heard usual city traffic. Saw building site across road but did not bother us.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We’re glad to know that our location was convenient for your needs. Parking in San Francisco is an additional expense as with most major cities with high-demand and limited real estate. As such, we aim to provide great value with our parking facilities including a secured, enclosed lot with 24 hour access and unlimited in-and-out privileges. We hope to have the chance to welcome you again when you next visit SF.

We stayed here for a military homecoming/Giants game outing, which was a 2 day event. At the last minute, I wanted to get another room. The staff was very helpful, got me the best price for both rooms, & were very professional.

The rooms are standard but were clean. We stayed on the 10th floor facing all the construction, unfortunately. They start working very early and it was noisy at 5:30 am so we didn't sleep with the balcony door open on the second night.

The bartender in the lounge was very slow and not attentive at all. The pizza was below average but covered our needs that night.

The Hotel is conveniently located next to all modes of transportation and freeway close. We will stay in the future if we need a hotel inside the city.

Room Tip: Ask for room with odd numbers..quieter!!
