“Overpriced despite good location”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

There's pros and cons to this hotel and imo the cons outweigh the pros. Pros - the location is good, easy access to Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli Square. The rooms were clean and updated. The beds were comfortable. Staff was friendly. They do have a kiosk that allows you to check in to your airline for your return trip and print outs as well. Cons - there's another Holiday Inn (an Express) around the block. Its similarly priced but includes a small breakfast buffet. This hotel does NOT include a buffet. In fact, the buffet offered is extremely over priced. All their food is overpriced. If you order breakfast the waiter takes food off the buffet, plates it or gives it to the "chef" to reheat or plate up and serve to you like it was prepared in the kitchen special for you when it wasn't. I actually watched it happening. They tell you they have a Denny's on site, when in fact its in a separate building. You have to walk out the front door, around the block to another building. It is technically part of the same hotel, but is separate. If you go out the back door to access Denny's easier, you cannot get back in the same way. You can get into the main building with your room key, but no such access available for the floor door. The cost of the meals at Denny's are very high. Didn't really save to eat at Denny's instead of the hotel. Another con, the walls are thin. We were next to the pool area, which was a bit of a problem with unattended kids running loose. They had a vending machine that took me dozen of attempts to accept my dollars (and they were new and crisp). They do have a gift shop/convenience type store at the entrance. It was nice to get a bottle of water/soda before departing for my day, but it was also pricey and the woman working was a little pushy about trying to sell me souvenirs. Anyway, the place wasn't bad, just really overpriced for what it was and for the amenities offered. Next time, I'd go with the Holiday Inn Express.

Room Tip: There's a Holiday Inn Express essentially next door that is a better value, includes their break...

Very pricey but it's San Fran near the wharf, it doesn't get cheaper. We upgraded to the jr suite and it was the perfect size. Wifi was free and strong. No breakfast but had a frig and microwave so we got breakfast and drinks the night before to save money. It was loud in the morning-we were over an alley. Minutes from anything tourist you want to do. Take the old cable car ride from Powell-Hyde turnaround early in the morning. Kids and adults loved the ride go one way into downtown and then take The F train back-it's cheaper.

It's a Holiday Inn, so one knows what to expect. However, this one has a truly great location, super-friendly, helpful staff, is clean and pleasant. Great value. Avoid the street-facing rooms, it's a busy area. Will return.

Room Tip: Avoid the street-facing rooms, it's a busy area!

As IHG members we stay at Holiday Inns a lot. As a result we have come to expect certain amenities like breakfast and free parking. Not so at this tourist destination hotel. Parking and the hotel restaurant are overpriced. It's irritating but not a deal breaker because there are advantages to this hotel. The staff are very courteous and helpful and the location is excellent for touring the city. It is within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf and cable cars and San Francisco's excellent bus system stops in front of the hotel for destinations downtown and beyond. All in all, I'll give it a mild recommendation due to location and service.

We were visiting Silicon Valley from the University of Oxford's EMBA program and decided to come in a few days early to visit San Francisco and vicinity. This hotel is in a great location right next to Fisherman's Wharf. It is a bit touristy, but probably the nicest place in the area. From here you can visit all of the main attractions including various cruises, Chinatown, Alcatraz, Sausalito, and the Redwood forest area.

The hotel was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Rooms were large. Parking was very expensive at $40 per day, but that is common in the area. Reception was very nice, but don't shop in the downstairs store for shirts or clothing. You will be two times what it would cost you along the main shopping strip.

The restaurant was nothing to write home about. The breakfast was $20 and not very good. There is an iHop down the road and that is what I would recommend.

Overall a very good hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces Alcatraz.

We stayed here for one night after a business trip. The check in staff gave us a room with a bit of a view when we asked. Everyone was nice, the room was very comfortable and it was a great location for walking to Fisherman's Wharf. Starbucks one block over, restaurants, everything we wanted.

We arrived in San Francisco on Friday the 20th of June. Its about a 25 min ride from the SFO airport, cab fare will run you $65 with tip. We hit a bit of traffic on the Embarcadero, but not bad. We are IHG Members and they had a place for you to check in. That went smoothly, Room 330. We traveled here for 3 nights before heading to Hawaii.
Rooms were average size, 2 double beds, ice bucket, table chair and extra large chair, charges for phones, tv, closet and bathroom, not huge but functional. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful and makes you feel welcome. The water for the sink and the shower were good, plenty of towels etc. Ice machine was near the elevator. They had a pool, looked clean, didn't use it. They have a restaurant and café, which I used to get a cup of tea before heading out. We had a coffee maker in the room as well. Service friendly, accommodating we had free wifi as well, they give you the code. Great location, central to everything and I would use them again in a heartbeat. We were only there to sleep. $325 a night for 3 nights with taxes etc.

A friend told me before we left that you don't need a car, she was right. Also if the fog rolled in and got really hot she said rent a car and go to wine country, thankfully we lucked out with the sunshine and weather. Walk everywhere, take the cable cars and for $50pp ride the Hop off Hop On bus for two days, that will get you over to the Golden Gate Bridge (hence not renting a car for the day and the traffic going over is awful if someone breaks down, which we saw happen on a Saturday) plus you have to pay a toll on the way back in advance with a rental car. Take the Hop off Hop On Bus tour (grey line, vendor on a side street to pay, so worth it and does 14 stops I think, They give you a map of the stops. We took it to the Golden Gate Bridge, tour around, the bus comes every 20 mins or so. You can also take the trolley from the golden gate bridge over the bridge to Sausalito (hence not needing a car) use the tour bus. The last bus out of Sausalito is at 5pm, and the last bus out of the Golden GAte bridge area is 6pm.

It was $200 for the 4 of us (hop off hop on) for 2 full days and that included the night tour from 7pm -9pm to see both bridges lit up at night, the bay bridge and golden gate. Sit on the top deck, but wear warm clothing. I know its June but its cold.

We walked up hill to Lombard Street to see the cars go down the crooked street, its cool, but you forget that that road is private residences, they tried shutting the cars down from going down it while we were there, well it backfired, no cars, but people descended upon it so I wouldn't be surprised that they opened it back up to cars again. It was on the news while we were there. There are sidewalks and that is what we did, walked down it and took photo's from below, but your standing in the street, fyi. The cable Cars go right by Lombard street.

To get the cable car its two blocks from the hotel, it was a 90 min wait, but worth it. Where else can you ride a cable car hanging of the side in the world, so cool. You can also pick the cable cars up in Union Square, much shorter wait coming back. The hop off hop on bus takes you also and ends at union square, so we took the cable car back to our area which runs till midnight. So we had no problems getting from union sq to fishermans, just cost us $24 one way for the 4 of us, but worth it. Union Square is where all the shops are and more restaurants. Macy's is 7 floors, that's just the one for Womans, Mens is next door. Forever 21 (I have a teenage girl) there are 2 of them and huge, also Nordstroms, Pink, H&M and other shops.

We ate at The Old Siam thai restaurant in Union Square, the best. We never did go into Chinatown, not enough time and didn't want to get lost, so we ate Thai by Union Square.

When you step outside of the hotel go right a few blocks and your down by Fisherman's Wharf. A few blocks from the Cable Car Station, that gets you into Union Square, about a 25 min ride one way will run you $6 pp, we used it everyday while we were there. The waterfront at Fisherman's Wharf is awesome. Lots of Dungeness Crab and their Boudin Bakery, hast he best Sour Dough Bread you could fine anywhere!!

Joanies Diner from the Happys Days TV show is diagonal from the hotel, we ate there on our last day, the food was great for breakfast, waffle loaded with fruit!

So much to see and do. Pier 39 is where the shopping is and the restaurants, but there are shops and restaurants along the way everywhere. Pier 35 gets you to Alcatraz. On Pier 39, there are sea lions on the docks sun bathing, they are huge. There is a WWII ship and submarine you can tour as well. There is Ghiradelli Square, up on a hill, but not a bad walk, shops, and icecream sundaes, whats not to love.

It's June, might be warm where your from but in San Fran, bring a pair of jeans, short sleeve short and a winter coat, I'm not kidding. It gets windy and cold and we froze. Wear sneakers, you walk everywhere. I bought a fleece there at Ghiradelli Square a shop because it was so cold. Had capri's on and wish I had had my jeans and north face jacket. Sunny during the day, but gets cool. Their summer is Sept/Oct.

We ate at Pompeii Grotto, Castignolas, Franciscan all by Fishermans and the No 9 Fishermans grotto too. Not cheap but they have an In and OUt burger there, Applebee's etc. You can go as inexpensive or as expensive, plenty to choose from. Its not cheap anywhere there though. The Franciscan is known for their fish sandwich, it was excellent.
