“Fantastic location but noisy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2010

This hotel is in a fantastic location - close to Fisherman's Wharf itself, near Pier 39, the Alcatraz ferry terimal, short walk from North Beach (Little Italy) and right next to tour bus terminals and cable car terminal.

We stayed in the main hotel and the rooms were clean, spacious and functional. It's good value for money considering the room quality and location.

However, I have two major gripes, meaning I wouldn't stay again. Firstly, please, please, please Holiday Inn, invest in some double glazing for your windows. We didn't sleep very well either of the nights we stayed as there was so much noise outside (shouting/ noise from local bars; car alarms; bin-lorry etc). We know the hotel could't help the noise, but some double glazing would have reduced the sound.

Secondly, if you arrive late you will probably be allocated a smoking room - that's what the receptionist told us when we checked in at 11pm after a delayed flight from Hawaii. Again, not the hotel's fault, but frustrating nonetheless for non-smokers. It really did dampen the start to our holiday as the room really, really wreaked of smoke - even the clean linen was smoke-filled. The hotel were v good at switching our room the following day with no fuss, but had we have known there's a high proprtion of smoking rooms and this was a risk, we probably wouldn't have stayed there.

Hotel staff very helpful and friendly and communal areas very clean and tidy. There's a restaurant and bar in the main building and a Denny's (for all the Brits on here, that's a diner which serves high fat/ fried food 24 hours a day) in the annexe building around the corner - was fine for a much-needed late night meal after along flight.

Would 100 % visit San Francisco again - fantastic city - make sure you check out the fab food in nearby North Beach, a real treat. But would I stay here again? Probably not.

If you are a regular to tripadvisor, you've probably read plenty of reviews on this property. If you are looking to stay in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf and that's the most important part of your stay, then you will NOT be dissappointed with this choice. However, if you are looking for a 5-star resort in San Francisco... pay more money and stay at the Hilton next door, the marriott, or move to Union Square.

That being said, this was a very good location for us over the 4th of July holiday. The Denny's in the "lobby" was perfect for breakfast. It was more expensive than most Denny's I've been to. But hey, it's San Fran.

You have probably read about the parking situation at this hotel. It's silly, but if you know what to expect it really isn't all that bad. The frustrating part is that if you park in the hotel underground garage for the $39 a night and end up being in the annex across the street. There is actually an off-site parking lot for the same price or a few dollars cheaper that ends up actually being closer to your room.

I asked for a room in the main building but the only one left was smoking. We couldn't have that! So, after parking our car we had to drag our bags down the sidewalk, across the street, and then down half a block to the enterance to the annex building. Strange!!!

But, when we got to the room we were on the first floor which is actually partially underground. If you open the window you will only see people's feet. Ha! But, the room was clean and the king bed obviously had plenty of room.

Actually the best surprise was the HOT water and good water pressure in the city. However, it did end up being a little loud a night with the street traffic but being from the country we really aren't used to that.

If we ever stayed there again I would want to be in the main building and if that ended up not being the case I would have at least wanted to be off the 1st floor. But, like I said, the location in the wharf cannot be beat!

Good location for Fishermans Wharf, Pier 39 and Cable Cars termini.
If you book a taxi to airport via porter in hotel be warned. The total final complete price set guaranteed by the hotel porter is NOT so.
The taxi guy added $6 airport tax at the airport but do not know who scammed me. The ported who guaranteed a certaion price knowing it was gonna be extra or the korean taxi driver in merc car - had no taxi sign
Dennys is actually in the annexe building where we were put.
Rooms just OK
Parking at annexe is tight.
Annex not as nice as main hotel so would not go back.

Clean room. On 4th floor, had no noisy neighbors. Easy walking distance to bus lines and cable car line. Close restaurants on Fisherman's Wharf. Denny's restaurant around corner in the Holiday Inn Express building but breakfast is still $10 per person or so.

This hotel advertises itself as a "pet friendly" hotel!. We booked a room a couple of weeks prior to our visit and we informed the agent that we were bringing our dog with us. All we were asked was how much our dog weighed!! Upon arrival, we were charged $85 for a "pet cleaning fee". We questioned this fee as we were not told about it when the room was booked and could not understand why we were being charged $85 for a cleaning fee before the dog had made any messes. We were told that it was a standard fee for all pets. All that was left of our dog when we left the room the next morning was a few hairs on the carpet which could have been vacuumed in less than a minute. We found this charge absolutely ridiculous. Then after this shocker, we were charged $44 to park our car for one night. The next morning, we had breakfast in house in their restaurant. 1 Coffee, 1 Orange Juice, 2 Blueberry Pancakes and one Egg and Bacon breakfast cost $43. This is a clean, comfortable hotel but the charges, we felt, were exorbitant. Across the street was a long standing breakfast cafe with all freshly prepared ingredients and looked wonderful. That's where we will be next time we're in the City, without the dog!!!!

me and 5 friends travelled from england to san francisco on the first leg of our west coast tour. we stayed from june 5th - 8th and had no complaints. all 3 rooms were clean and spacious. the location of the hotel is excellent for fishermans wharf and is very easy to get to. definitely recommend this hotel and san francisco as a whole was a great city. location only 2 blocks away from the trams to union square. alcatraz and golden gate bridge were definitely highlights. will be returning next year
