“Pleasant surprise”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

I mainly chose this hotel for its price, I would have preferred to be nearer Fisherman's Wharf. However having now stayed there I realize how lucky we were to have chosen this hotel rather than one in a more commercial location. We were able to get a bus ($2 per person) from the Embarcadero (15 stops) which took 20 minutes to Van Ness Avenue then walk the short distance to the hotel. If you book tours there is a complimentary pick up and drop off so again the location was not a disadvantage. The welcome was friendly and efficient. Our room was a pleasant surprise after our New York hotel, large and modern with two Queen size beds and a fridge. Free wi-fi. The view wasn't great but nothing to complain about, we were on the 14th floor so it was quiet. We didn't eat at the hotel as Polk Avenue is one block down and we discovered plenty of reasonable restaurants and supermarkets/food shops. There is a pool and gym but we didn't have time to use either. I have already recommended this hotel to both family and friends, and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less street noise.

I love the details you provided about the easy transportation to Fisherman’s Wharf and the local restaurants. It seems like you had an enjoyable visit in San Francisco. Thank you choosing us!

first of all I want to say that the hotel is nice and clean. beds were comfy shower was hot. the room was also quite large. there were a few nice restaurants close by which was good after a long day of sight seeing. there was a bus stop right outside which made it easy to travel to pier 39. getting to union square was more difficult. we waited for a trolley for 30 mins at 9:30pm. till we gave up and walked back to the hotel up those san Francisco hills with 2 tired children.
but I felt the hotel was in the middle of nowhere. it was very expensive. we paid almost $400/night. breakfast was very expensive but there is a starbucks next door. there is only 1 washing machine and dryer for a 500 room hotel and when I asked for $8 in quarters at the front desk they guy gave me attitude. by the way you will need around $8 for a load of washing.
we were right near the lift and so you did get a lot of noise.
I just thought that for that price it would have been closer to the action of the city. maybe offer free breakfast or airport transfer. taxi from airport cost around $50 it was cheeper for a family to get a taxi than use their shuttle which was around $14 per person. over all it was ok.

Fortunately, the important elements of clean rooms, comfy beds, hot water, and large rooms were found at our hotel. It even seems like the local restaurants provided good choices and the public transportation worked most of the time. I was disappointed to hear that the rate was too high. We try to remain competitive, but I will not pretend that summer in the city is inexpensive. Since you mentioned the washer and dryer, those are offered as a courtesy. It costs $2 per load to wash and another $2 to dry. Additional Laundromats are located nearby, as well as dry cleaning services offered by our hotel. Thank you staying with us.

There is no insulation between rooms, so you hear the bath being run and then the person having a bath! Ditto shower. Corridors reverberate and people seem toned to talk at high volume when they exit the lift :(
Breakfast good, dinner limited choices.

The kitchen staff will be happy to hear that you enjoyed the breakfast. I’m confused about the menu choices, though. We certainly do not offer a multi-page menu, but what we do have is delicious. My favorites are the neighborhood specialties. I hope to welcome you here again and hope that you find quieter neighbors next time.

We stayed here for two nights as part of a tour of California. It is cheaper than staying around Fisherman's Wharf, but very close to the California line trolleybus to the ferry terminal building, where we picked up a San Francisco tour. You can also pick up the F line trolleybuses which go to the Wharves and Fisherman's Wharf,

All in all we didn't notice the hotel, we were too busy sightseeing. That is probably a good thing, as it was a typical Holiday Inn. It did what it says on the tin.

It’s certainly not a bad thing to be so busy that the hotel is merely a bed. Thank you for pointing out how simple it is to get around from our location. Please come back again.

We stayed here for four nights on arrival from Uk at the start of North California tour. There is no wow factor on arrival, either in the public areas or in the room, which is dated. However, everything was well maintained and spotless. The room was good - we had paid for a city view, high room and the view was stunning. It was worth the extra, especially as we were there for a few days. The bathroom was small but with excellent quality towels and toiletries. There was a good shower. The beds were very comfortable and the linen good. Housekeeping was of a high standard. There was a coffee machine and fridge in the room and overall we were pleased with the hotel. Despite it being very busy, we were never disturbed by anyone around us and we slept very well. We passed on eating in the hotel. The restaurant area was windowless and rather soulless. We used the useful snack bar service and bar a couple of times. The snack service was expensive but provided good quality.

The location of this hotel is excellent. Polk Street runs behind it and this is packed with restaurants, cafés, shops. We used this area for breakfast and to stock up on water/snacks. The cable car stop all the way down to Union square and Chinatown is two minutes walk away. The bus stop is outside and it is a €2 15 minute straight ride down to Fishermans Wharf/ Pier 39.

The concierge provided useful information to us on the few occasions we asked and we bought Big Bus tickets here. On check-in, the hotel provided an excellent map and list of recommended restaurants and their location in the immediate location. This was really helpful. We had paid for the parking package beforehand and were glad of it. It was garaged parking, very secure and accessible from inside the hotel.

We would recommend this hotel for location, sound sleep, guaranteed standards of housekeeping and secure parking.

Room Tip: High up, city facing.

Travelling as part of a tour group, we arrived here later than anticipated as the flight from the UK was delayed, as was the bus that was collecting us from the airport. Fortunately, the hotel staff were well prepared and so getting to our rooms was relatively easy, although the luggage took a long while to arrive.

This hotel has definitely seen better days, but, in fairness, they are in the process of up-grading it. Believe the rooms have all been done and that they are now working on the public areas - hence no proper bar when we stayed.

The room was a good size which overlooked the pool and although the style is a bit dated, it was absolutely fine. Nice and clean, so no complaints there. It appears that several of the rooms did not have a safety deposit box (ours included) which they should have, but we just used a box in reception at no extra charge.

Location wise, I wasn't sure at first, but in actual fact, once you get your bearings a little, the location turns out to be very good indeed. Just round the corner is a line for one of the famous trams which can take you downtown and just a little further round the corner is Polk Street which is brimming with restaurants and some good shops. Buses were plentiful and not expensive and there were lots of taxis around, although we didn't use any.

All in all and despite its age, this is a good hotel in a very good location. Definitely would stay there again and definitely recommend.

Thank you for your recommendation. You’re right about the renovation. Our rooms were completed last year. The fitness room overlooking the pool, as well as the lobby, restaurant and bar were completed just a few weeks ago. I can’t wait until you return to enjoy the new space.

I stayed at the hotel 3 nights to see San Francisco and enjoy the America's Cup.

The Holiday Inn is a classic 3-star hotel, our room was at the top 5 floor with an excellent view over the city. It was spacious, business-like with a clean, simple bathroom. Breakfast was okay, again in a simple American style. Measured against the high average hotel room prices in September, the Holiday Inn offered good value for money.

All in all a good, centrally located hotel to see all the sights, hop on the nice old trams and enjoy a couple of days in a beautiful city.

Good value and the America’s Cup? Now that’s a combination that can’t be beat. While the race is not returning to SF, I hope you will. Thank you for your review.
