“Old World Charm needs some updates”
Reviewed 9 December 2013

Arrived 12/4 departed 12/7. Read mixed reviews online and wanted to give my opinion on this hotel. I was disappointed with my stay because this hotel has so much potential.

The location of this hotel on Market Street is not good. Too far from business district and too far from Castro. Lots of homeless people out front and no security to be found (except in the lobby checking room keys). Check in was good arrived around 10 PM room was ready. However the room we booked was a King or Queen, but when we got to the room it was two double beds. I called to the front desk to see what happened they simply said this is all you get with your reservations “check with your travel agent”. I was my travel agent. We were tired so we did not fight it just settled into the room, we were in room 330.

Room was clean, bed linens were good. Actual room size was small but the closet was good size. The bathroom was extremely small, only one person at a time in there unless one was in the shower. Bathroom was the size of a bathroom on a cruise ship. Our room was at the far end of the hotel I would suggest a room closer to the elevators.

The elevators are a major problem with this hotel. While there are 4 they are very slow and always busy. Give yourself plenty of time to wait on them because they are so slow.

We did not eat at the restaurant because it was not inviting at all. In fact it looked closed except when you walked all the way in. The bar looks nice but it is not open, there is no place to get a drink at this hotel. There is a Starbucks in the lobby which is nice.

The lobby area is old but has character. I think if they would put some money for new carpet and some paint it would really help with the overall atmosphere without losing the charm of the past.

The price is very good but location not so good (other than being right at the BART Civic Center stop).

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the Elevator.

Don't be fooled by the good reviews like I was! I checked into this hotel a week ago and it is nothing short of disgusting. There were homeless people and druggies outside the hotel and around the perimeter of the property. The carpets in the corridors and in the rooms are very dirty and in need of a good steam clean. The sheets were paper thin and the beds were old and uncomfortable. The bathrooms were not clean and there was mould on the shower curtain and extremely old. There is nothing appealing about this hotel. Don't torture yourself.

This hotel is a good value and in an excellent location. It is on Market Street and within short (2-3 blocks) of Civic Center attractions: SF Opera House, Davies Symphony Hall, and the SF Ballet, as well as City Hall. The staff is friendly and helpful. The beds are comfortable. It is an old hotel, nicely restored, but does not have the quiet that some newer structures have.

The restaurant serves good food, but if you want late drinks or a snack, the lounge closes at 10:00 pm.

Lots of security due to the down and outs who live on the streets outside.
Loved the look and feel of the hotel
The bed was the best in the 5 hotels we stayed in on holiday, by a long way.
The bathroom needs updating, in fact the whole hotel could maybe do with a spruce up.
And beware the car parking, $35 a day.
But it was fine.

We booked this hotel for our stay in San Francisco for 3 nights. On reaching the hotel, we were very disappointed with the standard of the rooms. The rooms were not clean, bathroom looked filthy. On repeated requests, we were not accommodated in a different room and to settle for what we had. The location of the hotel was quite good. There were a lot of attraction nearby and just a walk away. The locality seemed safe but the rooms and the service were a major disappointment.

Lovely hotel but it was in a very bad part of san Francisco. Drunks and druggies where ever you looked and night time you did not want to walk past them .the bar in the hotel closed at nine it would be better if it stayed open longer. The rooms were lovely and spacious.

I loved my stay - the hotel is older/historic, and so the rooms are cozy small, the elevators aren't fast but it was clean, comfortable, and the staff was helpful and friendly. You should be aware of the neighborhood - yes it's close to the Tenderloin, but I walked about without worry in the day, and at night I took a cab. Be sensible, that's all.
