“affordable good location”

I needed a modestly priced hotel near Union Square on a short notice and was happy to stay there for three nights. The rooms were large and comfortable and the continental breakfast was very popular but fine. I did notice a smell I wasn't able to place(something old?)The people at the front desk were very helpful.

We stayed there 10 days since December 24, 2013. It was the most affordable hotel we found due to the holidays and the only one we didn't have to share a bathroom with anyone.. They include continental breakfast, free WiFi access in your room and the people in the front desk were really nice. I definitively will stay again there. It is not the best neighborhood in SF but the hotel door is always lock and the only access is with your room key or asking the person in the front desk. I walked back to the hotel during the night few times and didn't have any issues. The hotel is old and the carpets have some stains like other people mentioned here but it is not falling apart.... We came back to the room sometimes before they had the time to do the room cleaning but we call for new towels and they arrived in less than 5 minutes.. The Mel's dinner is next to the hotel so it was super easy to find food in the night. In addition, it is super accessible to public transportation... If you want to save some money to enjoy the city like we did and have a nice place to sleep in the night I would recommend to stay here...

I have stayed in a number of modestly priced hotels in SF and this was definitely the best. Good security, spacious room and a continental breakfast, too. Even though my room faced Van Ness Avenue, noise wasn't a factor. Will definitely go back!

Nice older hotel, on-site parking, continental breakfast, and a Mel's restaurant in the same building open all night. I had a nice junior suite with two double beds and separate seating area. I did not hear any street noises and the hallway sounds were not too bad either. I would go back again especially if there is a show at GAMH.

When we stayed at the Opal we expected more in all honesty. The rooms are a bit dated, and there was old food under our bed. Needless to stay, that kind of soured the trip for the most part. There was a very obvious noise coming from the heater/air conditioning unit as well. The front desk staff was nice and I would like to commend them on that. The breakfast was also fairly poor. The fruit was awful. Awful. And the variety wasn't very impressive (especially on day 2). Day 1 had more options, but for some reason on Day 2 they removed a couple of things. Location was ok. It was not really near anything significant. Parking is expensive. Be forewarned about that. Unfortunately, not sure we would stay here with all the options around.

Super small room with a non-working toilet. Strong disinfectant smell. Thank goodness for convenient public rest room! After two attempts at fixing they offered to upgrade us but that was the day we were checking out. No refund available because we hadn't booked directly. Be forewarned. Adequate fitness room. Several choices, including eggs, on continental breakfast bar. Conveniently on bus line and next to Mel's Diner.

I was in San Francisco for a conference last week and stayed at the Opal, mainly because it was less expensive than most of the hotels in the area...I was most pleasantly surprised! I had read several reviews before I booked my reservation, regarding the neighborhood, age of the hotel, etc, etc....I found the Opal to be quite charming...clean, efficiently run, and I thought the staff was very helpful and courteous. And I personally liked the location...easy access to public transportation, a lot of great restaurants and points of interest within walking distance..I never felt threatened or uncomfortable. I would definitely stay there on my next trip to San
Francisco, be it business or pleasure.
