-close to Fisherman's Wharf & Columbus Ave where all the cafe's are
-historical feel, loved the decor!
-quiet, not a hostel atmosphere
-the price was very reasonable for San Fran
-the customer service wasn't the greatest though, my friend and I had an early morning flight to catch and the front desk doesn't open until 8:30 so it was very difficult to track someone down to drop off our keys. However, if we were more proactive and found out before what we needed to do, we could have avoided this stress.

Stayed here on a Friday and Saturday of May and really thought it was a great value: is within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, the cable cars, and much more. Never had to wait for a one of the comunal showers (which are kept very clean). The showers are very private and you close and lock a door when you are showering. This is an old historic hotel built in 1906 and you feel like you are back in that period. Has a lot of charm. I paid the extra $10 to get a room with a sink and it was well worth it. The beds are very firm. The only complaint I have (no fault of the hotel) was that the hotel is built over a bar and an Italian restaurant and the loud liquored up people went out into the street and made all kinds of racket late at night and this kept me awake (my room was facing the main street, Mason Street). Wish the beds were not so firm. Don't think you could find a better value in this location; being so close to the wharf, Pier 39, etc.,

The San Remo is a simply wonderful place to stay in San Fran. The location was excellent, safe area. The decor was quaint, and although the room was small it was perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable. The shared bathrooms too were clean and nice. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to people, especially those on a budget.

You can't find a better place than the San Remo. Who cares that there is no TV, fridge, or microwave? At the end of a long day of exploring the city, it was all we could do to flop down in bed at night. We've stayed there twice. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe it. The hotel even smells good - way better than the chemical clean smell. When I couldn't locate any shampoo, the very nice desk clerk went to his car and produced some brand new shampoo for me. Very nice! I did have a hard time finding Diet Pepsi in SF, even in the San Remo's Pepsi machine. Funny. We stayed during Halloween, and our very friendly desk clerk dressed up as some kind of super hero. Sorry to ramble, but the San Remo is the best place I have ever stayed at. Previous posters are right - you will end up paying more for a meal than you will for one night's lodging here. Take all of our advice, and book a room at the San Remo in San Francisco. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed at the San Remo twice in 2008. First time we took a $55 room and were put in a room right above the restaurant below which we could clearly hear from our beds until 2am. The next time we took a $75 room on the higher floor and had a reasonable stay. The communal showers are clean (but often have quite a line outside them), the staff friendly, but for $75 you can get something that is more of a hotel from the discount sites, and for $55 it was more of a hassle than is worth it.

San Francisco is a great place to visit and the San Remo was a great littoe place to stay in. The location was great, short walk to the peirs and dining. The hotel itself was quaint with the old fashioned individual bedrooms and plants climbing the banisters. The communal showers were clean with their own inbuilt heaters.
The staff were polite but not overly freindly.
Would also recomend the restaurant attached, lovely food and great service.

SF is a fantastic getaway weekend, as many know. When I met my wife, she always told me about her favorite little Inn in SF, the San Remo. She took me there and I, too, fell in love with this clean, quaint and fun hotel.

If you are looking for normal hotel amenities, book someplace else for $150 more per night. If you are looking for an incredible neighborhood in an inn with historic aura, then stay at San Remo. You will have tons of money left over to spend on attractions and dining. In fact, every dinner we had was more than what we paid for our room.

And don't let common baths scare you...they are spotless at all times and showers are private. This was the first place I have ever stayed with common facilities and I would not hesitate in the least to stay again and again.
