In general we liked this place a lot. The lobby area is very cool and the staff are very accommodating and nice. The room, while fully renovated, was not that comfortable. There was inadequate storage in the bathroom and bedroom. We really could not unpack at all. We also found the room unusually humid. We informed them of this and they felt it was just due to the weather but it was strange. My husband says it was not special enough to go back, but I would go. It's a great location and has a lot of historical feel to it.

Room Tip: I asked for most spacious, which was helpful.

Dear abrb524,

Thanks for your review; I appreciate that you liked the hotel and would come back! Great location, service and building rich with charm and character are all things that we have at the hotel. Your comments about the humidity are spot on it has been unusually humid for the past 7 days; we are not not use to it in the Bay area.

Thanks again for the feedback!

We booked this hotel because it was a Kimpton Property. It was anything but Kimpton! What a disappointment. Nothing positive, crowded noisy lobby felt like we were in the Hilton of Times Square NYC. I always try to stay at Kimpton properties, but this was nothing like the others. Usually they are boutique hotels. Will now look for a new hotel group to give my business to. Rooms were outdated and dirty! Not the place for a romantic getaway.

Room Tip: Switched our room a few times. Bathroom was dirty and the rooms had no view. We paid more for the...

Dear Ophelia,

We are really sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay at the Drake; your right that we are much bigger than the normal Kimpton but please don't make one poor stay ruin it for the brand. Kimpton Hotels was rated #1 in customer satisfaction for the second year in a row by JD Powers & Associates. Our 1928 rooms are old, but I assure you that we take pride in our $12 million dollar rooms renovation and the cleanliness of the property and if we don't get it right will fix it while you are here; It is really difficult after you leave.

Thanks for the feedback!

This hotel and the street around it was hopping during a recent mid-week stay--the lobby was swarming during afternoon cocktails (which could have been a positive, had I not been jet-lagged and lugging heavy bags), and the trolley and other noise from outside (8th floor) continued into the night. Nonetheless, I would happily return. The price was reasonable for the area, and my "historic queen" was not nearly as small as feared (esp. compared to NYC), even large enough to spread out the yoga mat. I liked the funky furnishings and the lobby was gorgeous in an old San Francisco way. Everyone was very friendly during check-in and check-out.

First of all, we warmly greeted by Tom (the Beefeater) upon arrival. Then everyone else, from the folks at the front desk to housekeeping were very nice and professional. Ariana (I believe that was her name) supplied us with lovely gifts and greeting card to celebrate my wife's birthday. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in the city.

Room Tip: Anywhere except the top floor which is right below the nightclub.

I was a guest and taught a three day class at this property. The Banquet Staff from Manager (Faith) to Banquet Captains (Vinny & Jose) to the Banquet houseman (Tim) were very professional, friendly and extraordinary attentive and helpful. The staff provided the perfect venue for the class and all of the students commented on the superb service. The food however, was the crowning glory. It was exceptional, on the level of a five star restaurant. The food presentation and flavor, both vegetarian and traditional platters, was extraordinary.

Definitely a return to destination, either work or holiday. Thank you Kimpton and all of the staff at the Sir Francis Drake for a very memorable experience.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking Powell are great for the view of the activity of San Francisco and the cable c...

I booked a room on Hotel Tonight which doesn't allow you to choose exactly what room you get but was $199 + tax and a decent deal. We were supposed to get 2 free cocktails with our booking which the woman at reception knew nothing about but when I showed her the email confirmation she complied. The room was fine, a bit on the small side with a queen bed but enough room for two of us. Sink is outside of the bathroom making it easier for two people to get ready. Nice toiletries from Bigelow. Breakfast was ok, I got the egg sandwich recommended by our waiter and the bagel tasted like a frozen one from the grocery store but the eggs were good.

The bed was comfortable but the air conditioning was awful- the vent was over the bed and blew straight down onto it which made for an unpleasant sleeping situation. The walls were thin enough that I could make out parts of our neighbor's conversation through the wall. Elevators were incredibly slow and need to be redone. No refrigerator in the room. The club upstairs was a sight to behold- we walked in to hordes of overweight, middle aged housewives going insane dancing to Naughty by Nature circa '92. If you take it for what it is, it was fun.

Overall, not terrible but I'd probably pick someplace else next time.

We spent for nights here recently and had a great time. The King room was fine, a bit scruffy around he edges , but clean and everything worked and was comfortable.
The only let down were;
1) The snotty attitude of the young barman in the down stairs area, please if you have no people skills get another job.
2) We were looking forward to going to the Starlight lounge, however it's closed Sunday and Monday nights.
The diner opposite is a better option for breakfast, the doorman are a great source of info !

Room Tip: Get a king room up high
