“Excellent base for San Francisco”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2013

We spent our first three nights at this hotel of our first Californian visit. Location is excellent and only a few minutes walk from the main shops at Union Square and also walkable distance from many other attractions such as Fishermans Wharf. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and I must mention Chris(?) on the concierge desk on the top floor who treated us like long lost friends and would do anything to help with our visit. ( He even gave us his best Michael Caine impression!!). Rooms are large and well furnished. Yes our room was overlooking the night club and there was some noise during the night but this is a city centre hotel so if you want the convenience of position you cant have it all ways.
Very pleased with choice of hotel and would definately return if we ever went back to San Francisco.

We finished our wonderful 2 week trip to the West Coast here & unfortunately, it brought our trip crashing downhill to a very disappointing end.

On checking in the staff were friendly.....but then the conciege took it too far but trying to sign us up to a time share!! At least let us get our cases into our room before bringing on the hard sell!!

Our room was spacious ....but a little tired. The surrounding streets are not great......not the safest.

The real problem we encourered though was the poor sound proofing in the room.....we didn't get one decent nights sleep during our stay! You could hear everything else that was going on around the room.....babies crying, toilets flushing, showers, cleaners cleaning, TVs & telephone calls of other guests......in fact a whole personal conversation of the poor lady in the room next to us.

So, not only did that disturb our sleep it made us feel very uncomfortable & aware that everything we were doing could also be heard by our neighbours!

We did complain.......but nobody contacted us to discuss the problem so we complained again & again on check out. No-one cared though......just said they didn't have the authority to deal with the complaint (even though they made us sit & wait for someone that did have the authority to deal with it on the day we left!).

We have followed up with Club Donatello since returning home but they really don't think that sleepless nights is something to complain about... in fact basically said that it must be in our heads & that there is no problem!

Even if we were just unlucky with our room, the poor customer service we received should certainly make you think twice about staying here......!

I stayed at the Donatello this past weekend and it was exactly what I expected. After reading many reviews online and having to search through many hotels I'm glad I choose this one. The reviews are not wrong. The staff are friendly, the location is perfect, and the room had plenty of space. For SF, I was expecting a cramped room but this room was very nice and luxury with plenty of space for my mom, my aunt, cousin, and I. We were on the sixth floor so it wasn't a great view, facing the other buildings, however the street sounds were not a problem for us. The hotel was the perfect location for taxis, just a few blocks from the heart of Union Square and only a few steps to restaurants. Easy to maneuver around the city staying at this hotel.

Room Tip: The king with pull-out bed is perfect for 4 people, may even fit more.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Club Donatello for three nights. The hotel is in an excellent location. We were able to go out the door and find restaurants, shopping and easy accessibility to public transportation. The room was very nice and the bed was extremely comfortable. ( I especially liked the linens.) Everything in the room was impeccable. We loved our stay there. I have to mention that one of the best features of the hotel is the staff. They were fantastic in every way. Everyone was friendly, extremely helpful, cheerful, cordial, etc. That was very important to us, as we were very unfamiliar with the location of most places we wanted to visit. They made our stay a very memorable one!

My wife and I stayed recently for one Saturday night.
This hotel is extremely well located; within walking distance of Union Square, the cable cars, shopping, dining and theaters. Plus, since you'll be walking, the price of parking seems well under the usual outrageous rates in SF.
Our room was on a higher floor, so we had no issues with the noise others have noted. You are in an urban area. Clean, well designed room, and it was roomy. The bed was comfortable, the towels & robes were fluffy. Nice TV and fixtures. "Environmental soap" in the bath (you know, it has a hole in the middle to avoid waste, recycled container printed with soy ink).
There was free WiFi and a desk that was reasonable sized for working at and had a decent chair for sitting in.
We almost ate at the on-site Italian restaurant but ended up walking around the area and choosing something else. It looked nice tho and had live music that evening (some young lady was singing jazz).

We did not have a chance to really put the hotel through their paces as we left early the next morning, but we had a restful nite and will come again.

Room Tip: Higher might be better to get away from traffic.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Donatello Hotel in San Francisco for two nights. Upon check in the staff were very pleasant, friendly and incredibly helpful, especially with regards to the local area and some of the things to go and see (although part of that was also to do with a bit of a sales pitch for a seminar they were having for a sight seeing tour). We had a lovely room, which was quite spacious for a city hotel, and it even had a patio balcony area to go and sit outside, albeit the views from the patio were not great as they were mostly of the sides of buildings around the hotel. There was even a tv in the bathroom! The one thing we have found with US hotels though is that generally the water pressure in the shower is not great, and this was no different. The hotel has a fitness centre and spa area which also has a top floor balcony and indoor lounge where you can go and relax/read etc. If you have a car, then the valet parking can be quite expensive (I think it was $25 a night). The rooms do have complimentary wifi, which these days is something that people really look for as some hotels charge for this, or only have it in their lobby area for free. The location of the hotel was very close (about a block) to Union square, which is where there is good shopping, restaurants and easy access to the public transport such as trams, buses, etc. The only real issue we found was that there are quite a lot of homeless/down and outs in the area if you happen to take a wrong turn (mostly a couple of blocks walk in the opposite direction from Union Square) and it can be quite daunting/intimidating, but to be honest we have kind of found that in quite a few of the big US cities. The hotel is quite a distance from Fishermans Wharf, Pier 39, Alcatraz etc, but the public transport can get you there quite easily. All in all, thie was a good choice in hotel (and there is a Starbucks round the corner for a coffee hit in the mornings), and we would stay again.

We recently stayed while visiting San Francisco, it was recommended by friends, we were not disappointed in the least, in particular we slept well on very comfortable beds. Best too was the location and the staff was friendly, the rooms clean. We had not been back in San Francisco for a while and this was a great venue for our come back.
