“Nice stay over the holidays”
Reviewed 7 January 2012

Took three rooms, two of them connectors, with the family, cousins and relatives. This property, formerly the Pan Pacific, has a vertigo-inducing interior atrium and glass elevators that the kids like looking into and riding up and down. No work out club, but they will arrange temporary privileges at the Club 1 work out club up Mason St (100 feet from door). Valet parking is expensive; $49-59 depending on size of vehicle. Seriously consider not having a car for your stay. If that isn't in the cards, consider parking itself yourself in the multi-level (and tiny) garage at Mason and O'Farrell. It's more like $33 a day and offers hotel guests in and out privileges, though not sure how.

Lobby bar/cafe is nice but expensive. I have honestly say the Level 3 surprised me with much better food (seared fish; salad; nice white wine) that any of us expected.

Room service was pretty fast (25 minutes) in the mornings; rooms themselves were large and well cleaned. Beds were comfortable. Water pressure in bathrooms dismal; no real noise in our rooms (1708-1709 and 1721-1722) from the adjacent rooms; however, windows are NOT double paned and you could hear some street noise (didn't keep anyone up or wake anyone).
Nice black out drapes.

We'd used the property again and enjoyed its central location.

Could recommend, for travels, Dottie's True Blue Cafe for one of the very, very best breakfasts in San Francisco (they are going to move in the near future to a rather sketchy location, but for now, it's on Jones); if all you want is tourist food, try Lori's Diner at Sutter and Powell or Sear's Fine foods for Pancakes. Both owned by, I think, Vietnamese guy who has a done a great job with straightforward tourist class food.

Room Tip: HIgher up, away from street noise if you can manage it.

We are so glad to hear that you and your family enjoyed your stay at the JW Marriott San Francisco! Sounds like you had a wonderful time and truly experienced the different areas of our hotel and San Francisco. We just completed the renovation of our fitness center, so it is now available to all guests. We expanded the area to add space for stretching and yoga and added all new fitness equipment. We hope you have the opportuntity to come visit us again soon!

As has been our tradition, my wife and two daughters rent two rooms for two nights before Christmas at the JW Marriott for shopping at nearby Union Square and Holiday evening entertainment. This hotel has become our favorite at Union Squre because it is away from the crowds and frenzy and the rooms, public areas and restaurant have been recently renovated and are maintained in excellent condition. We also believe the hotel is superior to other hotels in the vicinity. The staff is very professional and accommodating. When the concierge was unavailable, the front desk took the initiative to make dinner reservations for us with preferred treatment.

Room Tip: If you prefer quiet nights, book rooms on the 19th or 20th floors facing west.

I love visiting San Francisco during the Holidays... the Union Square area is decked out in holiday trim, the shopping is fantastic, and the restaurants in the City are incredible.

This time, rather than stay up on Nob Hill and trek back/forth (really up/down) with shopping packages, we decided to stay on "flat ground" at the JW... What an incredible choice!

Everyone at the hotel was fantastic... the concierge called ahead to welcome us and request ways in which we could enjoy our visit, the front desk welcomed us upon our late arrival, the lounge had an incredible breakfast/afternoon snack selection, and on and on. The staff simply couldn't have been more accommodating!

If you're considering a trip to the City for shopping, eating, etc... this should be your headquarters.

Room Tip: Work with the concierge staff to identify some of the areas best restaurants... They were extremely...

After splurging on a club level suite at the Ritz-Carlton on our previous visit to San Francisco, I was not expecting quite the same experience at the JW Marriott, but was very disappointed by what we got.

As previous reviewers have noted, it is challenging to know what makes this worthy of being a "JW". It certainly is not in the same league as previous JW properties we have stayed in (Grosvenor House, London; Ihilani on Oahu, the new JW Marquis in Miami). In fact we have stayed in significantly better "ordinary" Marriotts.

Service was moderate, and while the "studio" room was reasonably clean it was a bizarre shape, not well furnished and with an uninspiring view up Post Street.

Concierge Lounge was just OK. Fortunately we had taken a last minute decision to cut a five day stay to two days and decamp to Vegas - a wise move based on the standard of this hotel.

We are still struggling to find the "ideal" spot in SF, after six attempts. Ritz-Carlton was best, and even at the prices charged probably represents better value than this tired effort!

The rooms were rather dated, but I suppose in that part of town the buildings are so old it is hard to remodel. Location was good.. had breakfast in hotel restaurant and it was decent. Similar to many hotels that I have stayed in New York.. old, expensive but convenient.

Our family piled in to this hotel (two rooms) on 12/24. The staff was VERY pleasant and helpful. The concierge had good suggestions of things to do during the holiday. The rooms were well appointed and what I'd expect from a Marriott property. The location is great too!

Room Tip: We had a 20th floor view toward Union Square and Macy's -- which was very bright and entertainin...

Quite frankly, we expected more from a JW Marriott property. Between the two of us, we've racked up in excess of over 1 million Marriott points over the past ten years and this was the most disappointing 'flagship' property we've ever stayed at. The 'service first' attitude was generally absent during our 5 day stay. We had a (very clean) corner room on a high floor, but the layout was awkward and the room seemed cramped...especially for an "upgrade". Check-in left a lot to be desired with a very long line and too little help behind the reception counter. All of the unoccupied tables in the concierge lounge were filthy both times we visited.

The location is fantastic, with a very easy walk to Union Square and surrounding points of interest. We really enjoyed the enthusiastic staff at the Lobby Bar where we met friends either before or after dinner each night of our stay.

We ordered room service twice and the food was very mediocre and our tray was left uncollected in the hallway for several hours after our call to have it picked up. The final nail in the coffin was the goat-rodeo of confusion to pick-up our Hertz rental (the hotel advertises having a Hertz rental location as part of the hotel, which is actually three blocks away and a real challenge to navigate in a parking deck and then to find the way back in the rental car to the hotel through all the one-way streets to load luggage).

We wanted to love it...but it left us very blah.

Thank you very much for being a guest at our hotel and submitting your review. I am very sorry that the hotel did not meet your expectations. I invite you to contact us directly to discuss further, as this will help us address your concerns, especially in terms of the service levels and Hertz rental processes. We have many lovely room types and configurations at the hotel, so perhaps we can find one that would better suit your needs. We hope you give us another chance the next time you are in San Francisco.
