I stayed here for three nights on business and got a room on the 14th floor overlooking Post Street. A good room that is high enough up to be above most of the street noise that comes with being at Union Square and close to great shopping and restaurants. My room was comfortable but not the best room I've had at a JWM. However, the bathroom was nice, with good features, and amenities. The desk arrangement was user friendly and allowed for productive work to be done. The bed was extremely comfortable.

The room had access to the club lounge on the top floor --21. This and the fitness center come up a little short to be Tier 1 hotel stature.

There is nothing special about the lounge. It is fine but charging $10 for a glass of wine in a club lounge seems wrong to me. Not much of a perk. The breakfast was average.

The Fitness Center (on 5) is also just...fine. It will not impress. Limited weight machines and space. But, it is not a bad center.

On the plus side the hotel staff is focused and friendly. Every one likable and the front door folks (bags and transportation) are engaging and demonstrate personal awareness of you as a guest. You enter on 1 but reception is on 3. The ground floor is a nice design with outdoor furniture for waiting for valet or taxis...a cool approach.

If you want a sufficient and friendly place for business or a family then stay here. Great location. However, the environment seems a little sterile at times so you probably won't hang out or invite guests to come over for dinner/drinks.

All this being said, with a few focused tweaks, the facility could raise its game and impression level a lot if it chooses to do so. We'll see if the GM and company make a play to up their game.

Room Tip: Get a high room -- above 14--- on Post Street.

The hotel is located about a 5 minute walk from Union Square, which is ideal.
During our 1 week stay, the staff did their utmost!! Everyone were always friendly and very helpful with every request.
Regarding food, there is a bar and restaurant at the hotel. The breakfast and dinner were a nice suprise. Although a bit pricey, (breakfast buffet - 26$ and most entrees at dinner at around 30$), the food was of an excellent quality. Unfortunately the service was amateurish.
The hotel has a great luxurious atmosphere.
The room we had was spacious and had all the amaneties plus a great view.
Overall a very good and recommended hotel.

Room Tip: high floor = great SF views (even of the Golden Gate Bridge)

21 floor hotel with great views from every room. Valet staff and front desk was very accommodating. I didn't want a room on a high floor and she gladly placed me in another room. Rooms were big with nice restrooms. Bed was real comfortable. Hotel is close to the Piers and Lombard Street (curvy street). Look forward to my next stay.

Lobby is spectacular; typical reliability of a Marriott + a little fancier. However, not as fancy as other JW Marriotts that I've stayed in. The location is definitely very convenient and everyone at the hotel was friendly. As platinum Marriott members we're definitely a little biased because of the advantages that we get (lounge access, welcome wine, etc.).

This is my 2nd review of this hotel. I reviewed it a year ago when we stayed here. This hotel had another name before Marriott took over, but it still has not yet been renovated up to JW standards (e.g., old, torn, dry-rot curtains). We did not notice any evidence of renovations underway; so if you stay here, please do not expect JW Marriott quality for the time being. Since we got inexpensive conference rates, we put up with it; however, we would not stay here if we had to pay regular rates.

We stayed here 5 nights in February 2013. This time we asked for a room with a view since the 2 rooms we had the previous year did not have a decent view. Room 1521 looks out over the Post Street side. It was not high enough to obstruct the view of the air-conditioning plant of the buildings across from the hotel, but high enough to see buildings between Post St. & Market. The view from Concierge Lounge on the 21st floor (same side of the building as our room) was very nice, so ask for a room that is much higher up than the 15th floor.

This room had lots of mirrors, one above the desk, a full-length in the room; ½ wall over the bathroom sink; ½ wall above the tub; and a full-length mirror on the bathroom wall between the toilet and the separate shower stall. Plus, there is a lighted make-up mirror. It was a very large room and relatively clean, but the arm chair was soiled from wear (dirty arms from several years of accumulated dirt & dust). The curtains were torn from dry-rot (see photo I am posting). This is simply not what one would expect of a JW Marriott!

The carpet was clean. There was a lot of good lighting in the room. The marble bath was nice, but there was mold in the shower grout and the toilet did not always function well. (The toilet in a different room – 1607 – we stayed in last year also did not function well).
Again, I find that this hotel is just OK and is definitely not JW quality. We’ve stayed in Courtyards that are much nicer. The bar service is very slow, but very friendly once you can get someone’s attention. One evening we tried to get a seat in the empty restaurant, but we waited so long to get somebody to seat us that we finally gave up and just ate in the bar. The food is fairly good here.

The location near Union Square is perfect, and it is an easy walk to the Convention Center.

You cannot beat the location and service from this Marriott property in San Francisco. The rooms need some TLC but the service made up for those shortcomings. I prefer the Marriott at Union Square as those rooms feel newer and their Executive Lounge had more room for their guests. Whenever the entrance says JW Marriott, my expectations are higher than those of a standard Marriott. Compared to other major brands in the Bay Area, I will stick with Marriott. The rooms are much larger and the service is always good.

Room Tip: Stay at the Marriott Union Square a few blocks away. You'll save a few bucks and have a much ni...

If you are looking for a 3-star experience in a 5-star location, this is your place. I stayed in an executive level room (a complete joke- there was hardly a place to sit in the lounge and it was far from relaxing...) and found it to be dark and tired-- very 1995. There are better options in SF.

I’m so sorry that you had a less than stellar experience at our hotel. We do have many Marriott Rewards members frequently staying with us, and with a top floor panoramic city view from the Concierge Lounge, people tend to stick around to enjoy. If you choose to come back and stay with us again, please contact concierge and we will do everything we can to find you a private spot to relax.

Thank you for your feedback.

Best,
Bruce Gorelick
