The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square

This has to be one of the best locations for a hotel-heart of union square on Powell and Geary. Walking distance to everything and BART just 3 blocks down. We were upgraded to the modern tower 29th floor of 33 and that was your typical big, clean nice Westin room. Very quiet. We moved from a room that smelled strong of smoke after the 1st day but hey it's not the hotels fault some guy smoked before. Joy (FDA) was a delight from the start and very sweet and sent us an amenity. Anthony the concierge was helpful and accomodating-got us a reservation at Ideale- so amazing. And Sarah Diaz the concierge and another, taller/blonde female concierge were absolute sweethearts. We didn't eat in the hotel besides room service which was really good for breakfast. The hotel is so classic and historical its beautiful and centrally located, just outside and in a flash is the hustle and bustle of SF. Dont know how the landmark building rooms are but know its smaller/older), so if you want the modern Westin rooms book early for the modern tower, most of these negative reviews mayve stem from those who stayed in a room they werent expecting to be as older/smaller.

This hotel has a LOT of history, no arguing that. The location in the center of union square is ideal for anyone traveling to San Francisco. The tour buses all stop right across the street, there is always a cab in front of the hotel, the staff is helpful and beds comfortable. It goes downhill from there.

For the outrageous amount of money paid for this room, I'm sorry to say I expected a lot more. The room was very outdated and the walls were so thin I could literally hear everything that was going on in the room next to mine.

On our first day we got back to our room and realized that a bag of ours was missing. We looked everywhere for it and asked the front desk if anyone had turned it in. No one had. The next day we get a call saying that it was found outside of our room. When we get it back we find that our GPS and Satellite radio are missing. We don't blame the hotel for that, as someone else just as easily could have taken them, we have no idea. The staff we did deal with regarding the situation was professional and helpful.

For the amount of money paid for this hotel, a lot more was expected. For example, there is only free WiFi in the lobby, and you had to pay for it in your rooms. I could go to a $90 Comfort Inn and get free WiFi. I am just unimpressed with the attempts to make the customer happy. If you have a family with small children trying to go to sleep, I would either not stay here or request a room that does not join to another, as that was possibly the problem with the thin walls.

The location cannot be beat, it is central to almost everything. Maybe if prices went down for these rooms I would consider staying here again, but until then I'll find something else.

Room Tip: Request a room that does not connect to another

Checked in for a Salesforce conference. Location is outstanding and the history of this hotel fascinating. But after that it goes down hill. The rooms while comfortable and bedding as always a delight, were worn and at best blah. Check in was efficient and the bar quite fascinating. Hallways were dirty and my overall impression is this place needs a work over.

Awful Awful. The worst experience I ever had. The rooms are as big as my bathroom and stink like crazy. I had to hold my nose every time I walked through the hallway the smell was terrible. The view from my hotel room window was into a shaft with barely any sunlight. The parking price is 57 bux a night, yes, 57 bux. Ridiculous.

I have often stayed here, and while it's not modern and probably could use an upgrade, I keep coming back. Great service. Feels more like an independent hotel. Right in the middle of things, good for both business and leisure. Cable car stop near hotel, and short walk to many attractions. The St. Francis is a great San Francisco base.

We stayed at the Westin St Francis for 5 nights and were very happy with the hotel. Yes the room was slightly small and it may have been cool to be in the new tower block (we were in old part) but the room was very clean and the bathroom lovely, with 2 shower heads and the bed was very comfy and big. Large tv with good selection of channels (not that we stayed in to watch it) and in great position on Union Square near to lots of restaurants and shops. Also loved the fresh coffee maker in room. We had lovely cocktails in the hotel bar and fabulous meal at Bourbon Steak (the hotel restaurant), yes the restaurant is expensive but well worth a special treat. Gazpacho was amazing and steak perfect. Could not move after as was so full! Service impeccable, could not do enough for you. On one occasion we thought the phone wasn't working (turned out was fine, was my mistake) but a member of staff was up within 10 minutes of reporting it. Only minor criticism would be was no shower gel or shower cap (though we then went on to LA and same thing there) though there was soap which was fine. Also we had put meal on room number hoping to then pay the bill in cash on checkout but they automatically took it from the credit card we had to leave details of upon check in, but I guess I should have anticipated that. Would definitely stay here again if returned.

Room Tip: maybe ask for tower section

We were blown away by the amenities and the staff. I would recommend this Hotel to anyone. Only spent one night there, which was unfortunate (coming back from Yosemite). Wish we could have been there longer, thanks again Audrey.
