“St. Francis Still Good”
Reviewed 5 September 2011

This is our second or third stay at the St. Francis. It's as good as always, and I recommend it for its history and terrific location. (Keeping in mind, of course, that the rates are very high, which is a hallmark of San Francisco hotels.)

There is no hiding that this hotel has history and charm...from the moment you walk it, you're taken to a different time. All the staff were very friendly, we could not fault the service.

I used my SPG points and I assume seeing it was 'free' for me, we did not get the 'best' room in the hotel for obvious reasons. However while te room was not amazing, it was clean, standard and practical...ours was in the main older building and the rooms seemed to have been refurbished. The hallways leading to the room clearly showed its age, it had an old creepy feeling to it. Compared to other Westin hotels, the rooms are rather small however considering we had 2 double beds with the Westin Comfort, bathroom, a corner desk and tv/mini bar, we had all we needed to spend the night.

We did not try room service nor the restaurant on site but it was always packed and busy. There is a Michael Mina Restaurant in the hotel but we did not get a chance to try it.

You can't beat the location while visiting San Francisco. It is located right in the middle of Union Square with a tram stop right in front of the hotel, and tour buses are also close by. Taxis are readily available all day and night too. Everything is within walking distance, huge mall close by, lots of coffee shops and places to eat.

Only downside is no free internet however wifi is free in the lobby or there is a few starbucks close by.

Room Tip: The rooms in the towers are newer and larger. Join the SPG program.

Tons of history in this hotel. There are photos all over the hotel. It is like a museum. It is located in the centre of Union Square. Five minute walk to China town. The room was super comfortable and quiet. My pet-peeve is hearing the neighbours. It did not happen. I will only stay here.

Room Tip: i used the entertainment card and ama membership

Stayed for 4 nights at the Westin St Francis at the start of our USA road trip in Sept 2009. The hotel is very 1930's glamour from the outside and the check in area full of pics of former guests,HM Queen Elizabeth, and former US presidents ect.
We stayed in the older part of the hotel not the new area with the glass lift.

The rooms were smaller than I had imagined although the walk in wardrobe area was great, bed was comfortable and the bonus of tea and coffee facilities. The bathroom was small but had everything to hand. We had booked a room with a bath and was amazed to find this tiny little thing which looked more like an oversized shower tray, but was assured that in some parts of the States this is a bath?
The location of the hotel was the best bit, right on union square, we felt safe in this area at all times of the day and night.
We had drinks in the cool cocktail bar on several occasions but didn't eat at the restaurant as it was having a make over.
Ballrooms in the hotel are amazing and the over all atmosphere was great,
some of the hall ways from the hotel rooms to the lift area are long over due for a bit of a tidy up old worn carpet and very dull, however on the whole this was a minor observation.
Returned to San Francisco last year and was going to stay at the Westin but we found that the prices had shot up so stayed just around the corner

The service was great from the moment we arrived at the airport. We were immediately greeted by the staff who helped us to our room. We had a room on te 28th floor with great views of the city. The location is excellent right at heart of union square. You can access everything you want by cable car or bus. Parking is quite pricey at 50 dollars a night. The hotel itself is a good blend of historic charm and modern amenities but don't expect things like breakfast or a pool.

The staff was prompt and friendly for room service, valet, and concierge. Ms. Marichu Alvarez was a great ambassador for the Westin and made us feel right at home for our week long stay.

Marichu Alvarez is a terrific hostess! We were greated with such warmth and professionalism. Also we had Joy check us in at the front and she was equally professional and nice. Your staff knows how to show customer service with a smile! Good job!

This has to be one of the best locations for a hotel-heart of union square on Powell and Geary. Walking distance to everything and BART just 3 blocks down. We were upgraded to the modern tower 29th floor of 33 and that was your typical big, clean nice Westin room. Very quiet. We moved from a room that smelled strong of smoke after the 1st day but hey it's not the hotels fault some guy smoked before. Joy (FDA) was a delight from the start and very sweet and sent us an amenity. Anthony the concierge was helpful and accomodating-got us a reservation at Ideale- so amazing. And Sarah Diaz the concierge and another, taller/blonde female concierge were absolute sweethearts. We didn't eat in the hotel besides room service which was really good for breakfast. The hotel is so classic and historical its beautiful and centrally located, just outside and in a flash is the hustle and bustle of SF. Dont know how the landmark building rooms are but know its smaller/older), so if you want the modern Westin rooms book early for the modern tower, most of these negative reviews mayve stem from those who stayed in a room they werent expecting to be as older/smaller.
