“Historic site in amazing location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014 via mobile

Came to the city for a conference. This hotel was on the list and chose it because it was so close to Union Square. This put us close to tons of shops and a Bart stop. The place was hoping with several other conferences in town. The staff were very friendly, the rooms were well kept, and the location was the best. I had a historic room with a view of the square. It was busy at night but could not hear in my 4th fl room. The bathrooms were small, the closet large and the beds cozy. I enjoyed the historic touches of crystal doorknobs and beautiful crown molding.

A great hotel right on Union Square with cable cars at the front door. The reception features large TV screens showing live footage from the Square and the sidewalk.

- If you need fridge space, there is a complimentary fridge you can have wheeled to your room.
- No free wi-fi is available for guests - a little disappointing given the status of the hotel. A package for 3 connections was about $15 per day.
- Huge room with couches and super comfortable beds.
- Small bathroom - but still serviceable.
- Valet parking was $53 per day.

We booked early and got a great deal on the room. We then extended our stay for one night - very high price to pay . I would stay here again, but would try for an early bird discount booking.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel due to it's excellent location off Union Square and the fact that the hotel is located in the heart of San Francisco and is very close to a lot of tourist attractions, ie. China Town, sightseeing buses, etc. Can't fault the hotel for location, it's excellent but I didn't really rate the rest of the hotel.

The room we stayed in was on the 6th floor, the room was unusual as in the moment you came through the door from the hallway outside you were basically on top of the bed. I like hotel rooms where you come through the door and the bed is at the far end of the room. The fact the room door was right in front of the bed made my wife and I feel uneasy, weird I know, but it's a strange layout.

Another drawback with the door/bed layout is that once you try to sleep at night there is a glow of light coming from the hallway outside that you can clearly see and comes through the gap between the door and it's frame, this is rather annoying and also means that you can hear everyone outside in the hall waking past you room and talking. The door is wafer thin as the amount of noise you can hear is ridiculous.

It's not just the doors that are wafer thin, the walls are too!! On our second night the wafer thin wall in our bedroom, which our bed was up against, was all that separated my wife and I as we tried to sleep and roughly 3 girls on the other side in their room who were drinking and chatting all night. I could clearly make out everything they were saying, they even declared at 3am that OMG it was 3am we really should go to sleep, YES PLEASE!

The windows in our room looked out to another bedroom about 15 feet across from us, next to no light came into our room which resulted in a rather dark room all day long. One couldn't see anything out the windows except wall and other bedroom windows.

On a plus the room was clean, warm and comfortable but due to the door situation, wafer thin walls and lack of natural light through the windows I could never see myself staying in the hotel again. The hotel itself looks stunning from outside and the lobby is a nicely designed but the rooms really aren't up to much and I value my sleep far too much to risk another night here.

Can't comment on the food as we ate out in the famous pier area of the city every day as there are some brilliant restaurants and diners for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with thick doors and walls!!!!!!!!

Thank you for choosing The Westin St. Francis during your stay in San Francisco. I am happy to know that you enjoyed the location of the hotel, but disappointed that you and your wife were unable to rest well during your time with us. Perhaps next time, you can try staying in our guest rooms in the Tower building. We are nearing a complete renovation and are very excited about our new product. We hope you choose to stay with us again the next time you are in San Francisco. Be well.

this is the perfect hotel to stay if you want to see SF. The cable car is right outside and buses go all over the city. We walked to Broadway, Italianville, Chinatown, Market Street shopping, Fisherman's Wharf, Embarcadero's fresh food markets, Pier 39, Coit Tower, etc. This hotel seems to be centrally located. We took the bus to the museums and Golden Gate Park and that was easy!! Staff friendly, beds are great. We ate at the hotel 2 nights but there are so many to pick from right outside the door!!! We used to stay at the top of the hill but found at our age, walking up and down that big hill is not as fun anymore!! so we chose Westin St. Francis and stay here every time we are in the city. However, when our friends came with us this last time, we noticed that their room was very tiny, smelled, and had threadbare carpet. They were disappointed and wondered why we raved about it so much (they won't be coming back). So I'm guessing not every room is the same. Another bonus: No car is needed; You can even get here from the airport thorough the underground system (BART), easy to navigate and fun!! We always go back to a hotel if we like the staff and the staff here is very helpful, sometimes a bit busy, but always friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: My husband likes a view; sometimes we get a great view and sometimes we get a partial view. Also, t...

Stayed here as part of a trip
Travelling around the west coast. We had 3 nights which was fine, but our room was too pokey for a longer stay. Had everything you needed and was comfortable enough - if you didn't want to swing a cat!! Very business orientated so lots of banging doors early on!!

Chose to stay here for one night, purely on the strength of the brand. Chose it above other, cheaper, and now I realise, better hotels on Union Square.
The Westins always impress me - Bellevue, Mumbai are among the best. But this one was disappointing. The only thing going for it is the location and the history. However, the rooms were old and worn out at the edges. The AC made enough noise to wake up an Army, and kept switching itself on and off with a start. Room service was disappointing, even with American hotel standards. The fabled Westin bed was a bit lumpy! The carpet threadbare. No water bottles, no toilet accessories - and I am an SPG Elite member...
Never again, Westin SFO....

Union Square is THE place to stay in San Fran. And the history and charm of The Westin St. Francis is tough to beat. The staff are great, the rooms are nice, the restaurants and bars leave you with no reason to leave - but of course you want to! Because you are at the center of it all - night life, cafes, shopping, all the city has to offer. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

Green Features: Westin is a leader in sustainability - I'm grateful for the programs they have in place
