“Ridiculously Small Room”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2014 via mobile

My room is apparently in the older part of the hotel and not in the new tower. It is so small you could not possibly have two people in the room at the same time. The bathroom is the size of a port-o-potty and has no counter space. There is no room to even place a hair dryer while using it. In fact they hung the hair dryer on the towel rack because there is no where to store it. Sooooo angry that I am paying $400 per night for this!!!! When you walk into the room, the shade is closed for good reason. Your view is a brick wall. They have the TV in the corner (not facing the bed) b/c it cannot fit in the room. Long story short...don't stay here if you want anything more than a closet for a room.

Thank you for the feedback. The guestrooms in the Landmark Building vary in size due to the age & shape of the building. The rooms were fully renovated in 2009-2010 and we have plans to renovate again in the near future. We just completed a full renovation of the Tower guestrooms in April. These rooms are all more similar in size since the building was added in 1972.

The location is the only good thing we can say about our experience at this hotel. The laid-back check-in staff should have been a warning of what was to come. They didn't offer to have our bags taken to our room which would have been welcome after a 14 hour flight. We were waved in the general direction of the lifts and only figured out how to work them with the help of another guest. Then the room. It was gloomy, very small, only one chair to sit in and very, very stuffy. It did have a view of Union Square but only if you stood up, inched alongside the bed & peered down through the alleyway between the hotel wings. The air conditioning didn't seem to be working (we were there in a heat wave), so asked at reception if it could be checked while we were out. It wasn't. We were given a big fan which was incredibly noisy but did cool things down a little .. all a bit third world rather than five star. The lobby area was very small, very busy and very noisy so there was really nowhere to sit when we wanted to escape the depressing room.
Location perfect though.

We were in the older section of this historic hotel. Our room was huge...easily the size two normal rooms. Nicely decorated with attention to preserving the historic detail. High ceilings, crown moldings, great marble bath. Our room look out on Union Squre.

The hotel staff was friendly, very professional and eager to assist in any way. We truly loved our spray at thus very well located hotel.

This is a great hotel, perfect location in Union Square close to everything in the city. Looking right at Union Square. I stayed in the new tower, rooms very spacious, beds totally comfy, and room service was great...we got back to late to leave our door hanger to order but called and they had it ready to go at the time requested! Bell hop's are awesome, taxi line never was too long and you MUST visit Anabelle's restaurant around there. Fresh yummy variety of food. I don't think I'd stay anywhere else when I come back other than this beautiful hotel. Worth every penny!!! Jason behind the desk was great to us, put us in a fabulous spot on floor 21.

Room Tip: Just ask for higher room, they normally will find you something.

This hotel is more Westin than it is St. Francis. The positives include great service, superior location, clean rooms, a great gym and nice views. The negatives are that it lacks the intimacy that it had in bygone years. The Westin imprint is strong in the rooms. They are clean, but lack any charm or warmth. I did sleep well and the bathroom is very nice.

Room Tip: As high as possible, facing Union Square

My husband and just returned from 2 nights in a Grand Deluxe Tower King. After months of debating where we should stay, (we cancelled reservations at Fairmont Ghirardelli Square, Argonaut, and Grand Hyatt) and settled here. First, let me say, staying is San Francisco is really expensive. If you have a car, parking will run you $55-$70 overnight in the city. I've traveled all over the US in big cities and I think San Fran is the most expensive, close 2nd to NYC. But better than NYC you can get rooms that are bigger for comparable prices. With that being said, I don't factor parking prices into my review as it's a city thing, not a St Francis thing. We found that the St Francis was the best value. We were able to stay in a very recently renovated room and in the perfect tourist location. We paid a little more to have the Grand Deluxe room as they start on the 20th floor and go all the way to the 30th floor. If you know anything about staying in SF, it's noisy all hours. The higher the floor, the more peace and quiet. If you are in the tower room, you also have a better view when you're above the 20th floor, especially if you are facing union square. If you are a lower floor will look into a brick wall and windows. Another cool thing about the Tower Suite is the exclusive access to the glass elevator. I was speaking to the Front desk manager and he said Zagat had reviewed it as the thing to see in SF and it cause an influx of people taking rides and causing problems for guests trying to travel in and out of their rooms. As a result they installed an initially confusing but smart system to prevent anyone without a room key from entering the elevators. You select your floor on the keypad, insert key and it will indicate which elevator to enter and off you go. Once in the elevator there is nothing to select, you just ride to your floor. It was great once I figured it out. The room was comfortable and elegant. Caution, if you are one to prefer a plush bed, you will not be happy. The new heavenly beds are quite firm. I do generally prefer a plush bed, but we slept well so I was ok with it. Finally I will say the management is excellent. We arrived as a private reservation among a group of 900 people checking in. I won't go into the delays, but I will say when I finally ended up getting a room, the front desk manager was out working his own station and checking people in to expedite the line. I respect that. He also apologized for the inconvenience and more than compensated us for the challenges we faced. Our initial check in started off rough but he made everything right and the remainder of our trip was excellent. We will be back and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Pay extra for Grand Deluxe Rooms for rooms starting on the 20th floor.

I couldn't imagine there are still hotels charging for WiFi. This one did. A lot. One hour in the lobby was complimentary but Wifi in the room costs USD 150/day. This is VERY 20th century. The other complaint is the AC. It was very noisy and blowing right in my face when trying to sleep during the night. I had to turn it off to be able to get some sleep even though it got quite hot in the room.

Otherwise the Westin is old fashioned in a very nice traditional way with large nicely decorated rooms and very nice and helpful staff. The location is just great at Union Square, can't be better in SF. I would be happy to stay here again if not for the WiFi and the poor AC.
