We have some W's in NYC. They are not trendy. This W is very trendy. It was fun, glad we stayed here. Absolutely great location. We were able to walk everywhere. All of the staff is very helpful and our room had a great view of the bay bridge.
We really enjoyed the lively bar for a drink before or after our night out. They had great wines from local wineries and the bartenders at the downstairs bar were really friendly. The upstairs bar, not so much. It was very empty and we couldn't get a bartender to serve us. A waitress finally came over after waiting 20 minutes and we ordered, 20 minutes later, we still didn't have our drinks, nor could I find the waitress to cancel them. Stay downstairs, not worth paying the extra money for drinks upstairs with bad service!
We tried Trace for breakfast, it was fair. Their lunch and dinner menus looked a little better. I believe this is the case because we ordered snacks off the bar menu and they were very good.
My only complaint about the rooms is the bathroom door. No one wants to hear everything that goes on in the bathroom, please make a door that closes!!
Last, with the trendiness comes teenagers (or underage kids). Trying to sneak into the hotel. Throwing loud parties in their rooms which are very close to yours. The elevator key card security system is lacking because as soon I inserted my card in, anyone could press any button. So teenagers would sneak into the hotel who were not staying there and hit their floor with your keycard. I thought the purpose of the secure keycard elevator was that you couldn't hit a floor that your keycard didn't authorize. Not the case. The kids in the room next to us were partying all night and were so loud, I had to get up various times during the night to ask them to keep it down. It wasn't like we went to bed early, this was after going to bed at 1 or 2 am! This isn't the W's fault completely but it's what comes with a trendy reputation!
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the W in San Francisco and we would come back again.
