“Quirky and comfortable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2013

We enjoyed our 3 nights at Hotel Vertigo. It's in a good location, a little away from the city centre. The room was large and comfortable. The idea of having things slightly off 'straight' is fun. Complements the 'vertigo' theme. Free computer use in foyer. "Vertigo" playing on the huge TV screen when you arrive. Efficient staff though they could be friendlier and more interested. One was helpful when we jammed the safe.

We stayed at the Hotel Vertigo in September for one night and were very dissapointed generally. The hotel has had a make over and not a good one at that. The area is NOT 100% safe at night . We had a screaming Asian male running down the street outside the hotel completely naked at 3am and tramps everywhere.Every doorway stinks of Urinelocally. The front desk people were very helpful and nice the parking is expensive but all are in SF. Best put the car in the garage and get cabs around the city. All in all the price we paid for the night wasn't over the top but the building has seen better days. Also the link to the Hitchcock film Vertigo is very slim , two scenes and an exterior shot? come on that's stretching a theme don't you think?

Room Tip: Outward facing is the best

Dear shudawoodakudda,

I am sorry to hear that you had a less than favorable impression about our hotel and our accommodations. As a boutique hotel, we strive in creating a unique impression and theme compared to that of what you would experience at a big box hotel.

Our neighborhood of Nob Hill is one of the prime neighborhoods in San Francisco as it is in close proximity to Union Square, University of San Francisco and the exclusive Pacific Heights neighborhood. However, as with every major metropolitan city, one cannot help but encounter characteristics of an urban area, even in the best of the best San Francisco neighborhoods.

Overall during your visit, we hope that you enjoyed the sights, sounds, smells and flavors of a true experience, that can only happen in, San Francisco! We hope that you do return back to San Francisco in the future.

Best regards,

I stayed at the Vertigo on a business trip January 9-11, 2013 & was very happy I did! A great location with clean, spacious rooms - secure safe; comfortable king bed; powerful handheld hairdryer; mini refrigerator & single brewing coffee maker. Directly across the street is a small deli that opens at 6:00 am or you can walk down the street to a shoppette to get your room supplies.

I inquired about transportation to the airport & was given the option of taking their private car or they would would make arrangements for shuttle service. The staff here is gracious & very eagar to please. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for Room 521 - clean, spacious inner room overlooking a courtyard; very quiet.

Dear robeyt,

Your comments about your stay with us are much appreciated and we thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and the Trip Advisor community! We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the accommodations and the service of our staff during your two-night stay with us. We are also pleased that you enjoyed our neighborhood and my best guess would be that was Jin's Cafe that you were referring to? If not, it's a cute spot worth checking out! We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to San Francisco!

I used to live in San Francisco so whenever I visit it is important to me to stay somewhere that is not only safe, clean and comfortable, but also somewhere that is truly San Franciscan. Hotel Vertigo truly delivered. Older, ambient boutique hotel with all the modern amenities and modern decor. This was a great find, and I'll be back to stay in future for sure.

Nice place and location! Rooms are clean but you can listen to your neighbors even if they're just talking. Staff is not really helpful, except Greg, the rest of them seemed to be bothered any time we asked for some help. We asked them to reserve a taxi for the airport and they reserved a private car! We had to pay 80 dollars instead of 50 (taxi fare).

Dear Carpediem070,

Thank you for your recent review of our hotel. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed our accommodations and the convenient location of our hotel, in addition to the wonderful service that Greg was able to convey. It is unfortunate however to hear that you received less than great service from our other team members; your feedback is much appreciated and will use this example as a training opportunity so that we may improve in the future. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back on a future visit to San Francisco!

We stayed at Hotel Vertigo early December and it was a great choice. Staff were friendly and helpful, rooms were really clean and well appointed. It was also a great location, a short walk to Union Square and the surrounding area was fine to walk around at night. Woudl definitely stay again if we are lucky enough to return to San Francisco.

We were in San Fran over Christmas/New Year this year and of course most of the hotels in town were fully booked. We searched and searched and Vertigo was the best compromise we could find between ambience, functionality and cost effectiveness (peak season and short notice of course means outrageous prices everywhere...!)

Having seen the photos of the rooms we were a bit worried we'd hate it - quite frankly they didn't appeal much. So we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find it is much more tasteful than what the photos suggest. Not so cheesy at all, but actually more artsy and well thought out. This, combined with the historic building, means it's generally a pleasant place to be.

Service was quick and friendly. There is only one lift so you do wait a while sometimes but it's never a huge problem either. It's a 2 star so no help with your bags, but it's not hard to get around either - we had lots of luggage and had no troubles.

When we first got to our room we felt quite cold and couldn't find the aircon switch... maintenance guy came up quickly and after a very thorough inspection was unable to find it either, so he brought up a small foot heater which it turned out didn't work. We then found another foot heater in the closet so we suspect our room was not air conditioned at all... Fortunately the second heater did work and was enough to keep us toasty the entire time, so it wasn't a problem in the end.

The rooms are not huge but don't feel cramped either - just enough to be comfortable. There is a desk to work at, a small coffee table with a soft chair and even a fridge, which was great for keeping dinner left-overs, which we ate for breakfast the next morning. They are recently refurbished so feel clean and nice albeit quite simple - just the basics and not much more. The worst thing about our room was the bathroom, which was devoid of any stylistic touches at all and as a result felt like a public toilet cubicle. It is all white with fluorescent lighting, which is not a great combination.

All in all we could very possibly stay again. The location is good, quite central and easily accessible from most places... at this price level we suspect it may be one of the best value propositions in town.
