It all depends what you want from a hotel, but I found the place too basic for my tastes. That said, hotel rooms are very expensive in San Francisco, so although you don't get much for your money at The Good Hotel, you won't find a private room much cheaper in the city. I would advise not bringing a car here if you can avoid it, as parking spaces are limited and cost around 30 dollars per day - this maybe part of the hotel's environmentally friendly drive (no pun intended) to ease pollution, or it might just be a nice money maker, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The location is pretty good for exploring the city on foot or by public transport, so a car isn't really a neccesity anyway. I had a room in the motel-style annex which suffered from intrusive noise, due to thin walls and it didn't feel particularly secure. As expected the rooms are quite basic and have ramshackle recycled furniture, but it was, at least, functional. This is all part of the hotel philosophy which advocates ethical trading, philanthropy and environmental sympathy. All very commendable aims, so I definitely can't fault it for that.

Room Tip: Try and get a room in the main building as the motel-style annexes aren't great.

Because Good Hotel is in the Tenderloin area, we were a little bit scared before arrived, but the front desk staff is nice and after check into our room, we are delighted with its interior designs. The room furniture looks like new and modern designed: 2 wooden beds (each end has a small shelf with 2 to 3 books for you to read); a white round table with a chair; a light green and white wooden drawers; a ceiling fan; a standing lamp by a bed; a simple chandelier above the table; a movable reading light clip on the bed head board; 2 windows with new WoodLite shuttles; the most delighted design is the toilet water tank with its water entrance above the water tank, and a small sink on the top of the tank letting the guests use the water to wash hands before water flowing into the tank. It is really save water. Also I like another design - all soap, shower gel, and shampoo, are putting on the wall with the bottles that can see through, so it would be easier found out when the amount is too low.
The room is neat, super clean and comfortable. Out of the room, the old stairways painted yellow and white colors. I feel this hotel has been renovated from an old dull place to a bright modern one. If our room has a microwave and a mini refrigerator and at least 2 chairs that would be perfect!
We know the neighborhood is not so good, but we feel day time is fine to go around and there are some restaurants nearby, so it is convenient if needs food immediately. We are more cautious when we return in the evening. Because the train station is not far away, our experience is not bad. Anyway, we feel very comfortable inside the room though the price is not low.

I stayed here for work because it was the most convenient possible location for me - the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is kiddie-corner from the hotel. It is a very no-frills place with a lot of hipster appeal (many other reviewers noticed the photo booth). Also as other reviewers have mentioned, the neighborhood is not great, and it does get noisy at night. That said, the room was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel also has done some interesting things with recycled/repurposed materials, and the room had one of the coolest toilets I've ever seen: when you flush, it runs the incoming clean water into a water faucet before going into the tank, so that you can wash your hands and save water in the process. Very clever.

Dear GrellisSanPedro,

Thank you for taking the time to write the detailed review of your recent stay with us. We are so pleased we could be a comfortable home away from home for you at Good Hotel. Our associates pride themselves on their customer service skills and will be glad to hear that you appreciated their attentiveness.

As you noted, we are centrally located to many sites and attractions in downtown San Francisco. Our neighborhood, SoMa, is changing before our eyes as we welcome new businesses to the area like the addition of new restaurants and stores.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experiences, we look forward to another opportunity to give you a great experience the next time you travel to San Francisco.

Sincerely,

Christina Cosby

Good things; easy access to the BART, good but not great free wifi, comfortable bed, friendly and helpful staff. Not so good: way overpriced for a room that has no desk to work/write on, no comfortable chair in the room, no refrigerator to keep food fresh, one very slow elevator. Very bad things; the sleazy neighborhood, the noise, and, again, the price. I averaged US$260/night incl tax, which was a rip off, pure and simple, for what you get. Don't be misled by their website's description of the neighborhood. You are only a few blocks away from nicer environment, but those few blocks can feel very long when you are walking back at night.

We stayed 3 nights in a queen room with a small bath. We came in there late (1am) but the front desk was still in service (24h). When we opened our room door we noticed a "heat wave" coming out of there. AC was not working. We asked for help and the friendly man at the front desk sent us the housekeeper with a fan. Hilarious.. it was completely broken and not working at all. They told us they would fix the AC the next day. Nothing ! - The housekeeper told us that the AC is not even installed yet. We asked for another room but the hotel was completely booked out, so we got another (working!!) fan. We could not even open the window because the windows were tough to open (one kept on closing without a bottle stabilizing it) and because it was way too loud !
It was so noisy (we had the room right attached to 7th street) that we could barely sleep and the shutters didn´t close well so it was very bright in the room.
The bathroom was clean. Shower worked ok but because no AC was installed the fan in the bathroom wasn´t working neither and so the bathroom turned into a sauna after every shower.
Free Coffee and Tea in room was pleasant (refilled every day). Room seemed pretty clean and sheets were changed daily.
The location is good to reach public transportation and Market Street + Union Square but overall the neighborhood was not that good. Many homeless people ...
