“Great motel!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2012

We were very pleasantly surprised by this motel. It was a little oasis just off busy Lombard Street. Our room wasn't that big but for the price and location this was to be expected. It was very comfortable and we found it a great place to be based for getting into the city. Chestnut Street is just around the corner and has a nice selection of the shops, bars and restaurants. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall we would recommend staying here - especially if you have a car with you and don't want to pay for expensive parking.

Room Tip: ask for a room at the back of the motel - Lombard St is very busy

“Great Motel“ Thank you very much for your kind review, we are also pleasantly surprised to add another happy guest to our family. Sorry your room wasn’t that big, not sure if you just had a queen room, but queen with kitchens do offer twice the space. Unfortunately, this hotel was built for cozy comfort nearly 75 years ago, so we do not offer the space of the newer chain hotels. But the charm and design of the rooms are made to give you the feel of staying with a family member. Next visit do try the queen kitchen which comes fully equipped for cooking (just bring the food), you might find this a surprising choice as well.

Thank you also for a very nice review about the hotel staff, it is important for us to hear if we are doing a good job too, every review is read by all our employees so we can learn from them. Good reviews enforce good behavior and follow-up, so again thank you. I am glad to hear we are not too busy or overwhelmed to be useful to our guest. And yes parking is pleasant because of the free private garages, but you are right Lombard can be busy and therefore noisy.

We, thank you again and look forward to your next stay, please try to make it soon.

My friend and I just had the opportunity to stay at the Marina Motel for two nights; we had a room in the inside courtyard, and other friends of ours had a room along Lombard street. The hotel was everything we could have asked for, and more. The hotel appearance was lovely, with bright flowers all around us, including in a little window box right outside our windows so we could see them all the time; felt like we were in Spain or Italy! The room was very clean and quaint, and quiet, and our friends with the room on Lombard street also said their room was remarkably quiet, despite the busy street outside. The free parking was a lifesaver (though it is true that the garages are small, they're more than adequate for the average car, and not having to find or pay for street parking makes the three-point turn to get in them more than worth your while!). The staff was friendly and helpful; gave us suggestions on where to find nearby restaurants, explained how to reserve our garage for ourselves so it would still be free if we were coming back to the hotel late. And, though the hotel does not offer a free breakfast, they presented us with two-for-one coupons to a nearby cafe - Judy's - where the food was AMAZING. Very reasonably priced (even without the coupon) and everything our table of four ordered was hot and yummy - try the french toast!!! All-in-all, it was a joy to stay at the Marina Motel. I wish we'd had more nights there, and when I return to San Francisco, I will definitely be staying there again!!! Thanks so much!

“A great place to stay“ Thank you very much for your kind review, we are so happy that you had such a great stay with us. It is very important to the hotel to learn what guest like and dislike so that we can improve on them, from housekeeping to staff, to grounds. We love this time of the year because the grounds do lend the charm and allure of our unique hotel.

We are pleased that both your friends and yourself (of course) found the rooms clean, quiet and a pleasant stay. Yes! Some of the garages can be tight with the larger vehicles that are made today, when available there are about seven additional uncovered parking spaces to accommodate those oversized vehicles. However, during the summer months you will find them filled faster than other times, because more families are traveling with larger vehicles. Amazingly, we always seem to find a solution to the parking problem when they arise.

Ok! now I am even prouder to hear our staff was not just friendly (which we expect) but helpful which we promote, offering suggestions for restaurants and activities in the area is an aspiration we want them to process and offer to our guest. Thanks for the review of Judy’s we love their food too…and are proud to offer this alternative to our guest in lue of a continental breakfast. You must also try their pumpkin loaf a yummy substitute for bread.

We, thank you again and look forward to your next stay, please try to9 make it soon.

This historic motel was built 75 years ago to celebrate the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's unique flower-filled courtyard has small carports that provide FREE parking---which in San Francisco is a godsend. Downtown hotels can charge upwards of $50 a day. The Marina Motel is on the edge of the Marina and Cow Hollow neighborhoods, which have many good options for dining and shopping. It is also a quick drive to the Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge, and an interesting underneath view of the Golden Gate from a easy hike down to Fort Point below the visitor center. Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach, Fisherman's Warf, and the Ferry Building can be reached via bus, cable car, walking, taxi or a combo of all of those within 15-20 minutes.

The rooms at the Marina Motel are very clean and nicely decorated---but those with the single queen beds are small. Also be sure to get an inner courtyard room. Those facing Lombard Street will be noisy---this point of Lombard Street is the access to the 101 North Freeway. I love historic older hotels---but those that require larger rooms or fancy bathrooms probably won't be comfortable here. And there were a few basic comforts lacking---the bathroom could use a shelf to hold toiletries and a box of tissues was really missed.

The Marina Motel is also dog friendly, so we we definitely stay again and bring our chocolate lab with us next time.

Room Tip: Inner courtyard rooms will avoid the heavy traffic noise from Lombard Street.

“Charm + Value“ Thank you for your extremely informative review of our hotel for a 75 year old hotel we are very proud when guest find us pleasing. We strive daily to keep and maintain our heritage and appeal in the Marina/Cow Hollow area. Having the private garages (FREE) and kitchens help to distinguish us from other hotels. Being centrally located to so many areas of interest to visitors is an added bonus, since most of them are in walking distance.

Now my favorite part of comments is the condition of the rooms, I take personal responsibility and satisfaction in the cleanliness of the rooms, and ensuring that our guest have a peaceful visit. We can not overcome the smallness of rooms that were built 75 years ago, Queen rooms are our smallest, and are reflected in the rates we offer, but for just a little more, sometimes only $10.00 you can upgrade to a Queen room with a kitchen and have almost double the space. Additionally, rooms in the courtyard are farther away from the traffic noise, and much quieter, we are very honest with our guest about street facing rooms, it is a major city and an equally major highway with six lanes of traffic there is street noise. But, the bonus of these rooms are that many have two sleeping areas for families, where the parents would sleep in the quieter back bedroom facing the courtyard and children whom can sleep through most noise would sleep in the front street facing room. These rooms can accommodate additional rollaway, so they offer families of 4 -5 people less expensive alternatives to having to book two rooms.

Thanks for the additional advise on the bathroom shelf, we have been adding them as we find items that fit the size and look of the bathroom, and usually tissues can be found in the bedroom area, for sanitary reason we choose to not place them in the bathroom. WE apologize if your room was missing them completely.

We, thank you again and look forward to your next stay.

We were scheduled to stay two nights at this lovely motel, but decided to stay one more night. We had a great room (they're all upstairs with garages below) complete with a stove, full size fridge and dinette set. The bed was very comfortable, the room clean with plenty of storage. The staff was friendly and helpful. The handyman/gardener does a beautiful job of keeping up the plantings and he even helped carry a heavy item up to our room! Every convenience you may need is within walking distance; market, pharmacy, cleaners, flower shop, bakery, deli, and bus stop if you don't want to drive downtown. They are right at the edge of the Presidio, home of the Disney family museum and Lucasfilm Studios. My husband and I will be back, maybe for a longer stay next time!

Room Tip: Room19is cozy for one, room 26 is great; like a little apartment. No pool or restaurant on site.

“A charming Surprise” Thank you we were happy that you decided to extend you stay that is always an indication of a pleasant stay, sounds like you had one of our kitchen rooms. These rooms are like a mini apartment complete with all the necessary equipment to cook for a party of four, these rooms are highly recommended for guest with stays of three nights or more, or any guest with dogs because of their size and conveniences.

Our handyman/gardener was so overwhelmed to read your comments on the grounds, of course having been with us 14 years, he does take great pride in his work, and loves to walk the guest through the grounds to show off the plants, but was an exceptionally nice day for him to read the comments you gave online.

Thank you for the great description of amenities in the area, this also is extremely helpful to others reading these comments and looking for ideas of what can be found in our area. We, thank you again and look forward to your next stay.

Modern enough to be comfortable. Not so modern that it loses the quaint appeal you look for. So many cafe's and points of interest within walking distance. We just loved the place! When we return we will certainly be staying at the Marina Motel.

“Great San Francisco experience” Thank you for your wonderful review of our hotel, it is lovely to read your remarks. We have tried to keep the motel up to date without losing the uniqueness of a homey, non-commercialized feeling. There are great points of interest in the area and as you mentioned café’s that make even a quick jaunt to San Francisco fun. Please come stay with us again and experience all that Marina/Cow Hollow has to offer.

We look forward to your future stay with us and hope it will be soon.

I stayed four days at this hotel, the bedroom has everithing you need: is a typical building but the bedrooms are made as news, comfortables beds, beautiful furniture, microwave, refrigerator, caffe to make and drink whatever you want, parking... It is a very nice, clean and peaceful place. It was my better choice in this trip to California.

Room Tip: Las habitaciones que dan al patio son soñadas.

we are so glad to have found the Marina Motel.we have not been to the city in a long time and did not know what to expect.Check-in was easy, staff friendly, room very comfortable, and only one story, which was exiting for my husband, since he is afraid of multiple story buildings. After driving it was nice to leave the car in a garage and walk .we found this awesome restaurant 'Isa" a few blocks down on Lombard St and a Thai restaurant the next evening.we met one of the owners, Heidi, the next morning, she gave us great tips for the day.our 2 night stay was a very pleasant one , unfortunately we did not see all the flowers in the courtyard blooming, but we will be back for that.

“We will be back” and we will be here waiting for you with open arms. Nothing sounds better to a hotelier than to hear a guest say they will be back. We are doing something right if our guest take the time to write a review and it is with such passion. Thanks! It is a pleasure to hear that you had a easy check-in and found the hotel very comfortable. Our hotel having been built with the garages on the first floor and rooms on the second, have mixed reviews sometimes with those that find walking stairs difficult, but I think the layout and coziness of the garden and convenient parking, make of for some of the odd objections.

Please come back when you do have a chance to see the garden in view it, is a beautiful and peaceful site. Thanks also for the suggestion of “ISA” we have found other guest have used your suggestion and loved the outcome. We will recommend it to others as well.

We look forward to your future stay with us and hope it will be soon.
