Pal's was recommended to us by our tour guide at the Johnson HIstoric Site. Ended up being a hit with my children. The BBQ hot dog was different but tasty. The "sauce burger" was a burger that ended up tasting like a sloppy joe. Service was friendly and fast. Restaurant was clean. Prices were cheap. Was able to feed a family of five for about $20. Little confusing on how to find the place as the GPS was off. Just ask a local and they will direct you there.

Read the reviews left by others and thought I'd give the place a shot. It's a little hard to find (at least my GPS got a little confused)... it's in the big K-Mart strip mall.

It's kind of strange. The cashier is constantly surveying the parking lot and announces the number of customers approaching over the microphone (presumably so they can drop fries... everyone orders fries). Old school yellow formica booths sit atop old school green carpet in an old school paneled dining room.

Sparkling clean. Apparantly the standing orders are if one is not serving a customer he or she needs to be cleaning. Tables. Counters. Even the windows. Someone was cleaning the whole time I was there, and the place was already spotless.

But I digress. One looks at the big menu board -- they may have a dozen items, mostly derivatives of hotdogs, hamburgers, and chicken sandwiches (and, of course, fries and milk shakes) -- and places his or her order. It's then repeated over the PA system. One pays, walks down the counter, picks up his or food, takes it to a table, and eats it.

I had the cheeseburger. It was good. Really good. Hot, juicy, real beef. The fries were hot, fresh, and crisp.

There seemed to be lots of locals who are regulars, always a good sign.

Decent local hangout alternative to the big chains. It's relatively cheap as well.

One of the best places for sweet and unsweet tea and the frenchie fries are always hot, crispy and wonderful. If you are trying the ham and cheese, ask for it to be grilled...very flavorful.

Pal's has the best hot dogs on earth - and you can't get them anywhere outside the Mountain Empire area of upper East Tennessee and southwestern Virginia. This a very small chain, locally owned by "Pal" Barger, and he will not sell franchises. There are no stores outside of this area, which just keeps it extra special and worth the effort!

They hot dogs are always hot and steamy, great pink weiny with a little spice taste, mustard, onions, and to top is all off - absolutely the best hot dog chili anywhere. Chili is just right, very meaty, fine grind which is somewhat crumbly but certainly not dry, slightly spicy - and NO BEANS of course! The homemade chili is WHAT MAKES this great dog.
' Frenchie' fries are good too, as is the sweet tea. Burgers are real decent (the few times I've tried one, can't get past those dogs) with good fresh toppings, good size sandwich too.

There are several Pal's locations in the Tri-Cities area (Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City) in the State of East Tennessee, but I think this is the only one that is walk-in / sit-down. There is plenty of parking at this location (Greenville Commons, big enough for motorhomes even) cause it is in a large shopping center with a Big K-mart. The original location in downtown Kingsport is also a walk-in and order, but you still have to eat outside at the tables.
