Appalachian Trail Conservancy Headquarters

Attraction details
Owner description: The main visitor center for the Appalachian Trail and one of the most famous landmarks on the entire 2,190-mile national scenic trail. It's considered the 'psychological half-way point' on the Appalachian Trail. All are welcome, from tourists to "thru-hikers" walking the entire trail. The center has exhibits, a gift shop where you can purchase maps, books, and souvenirs. A 10-foot 3D map shows the entire East Coast, with a miniature replica trail shelter built into the back side. A hiker lounge offers long-distance hikers a place to relax and recharge, with cold and hot drinks available. A collection of more than 25,000 photos of hikers taken since 1979 is one of the most unique features. Those intent on walking the entire A.T. will have their photo added to the collection, but anyone can take a photo of themselves out in front on the sign for a memorable snapshot. By visiting Harpers Ferry, you'll have already started the 14-state challenge, which encourages hikers to visit one location in each of the Trail's 14 states. If you visit lower town historic Harpers Ferry just a half mile away and walk across the footbridge over the Potomac River, you'll have already completed two states.

Never before had I experience the level of service and enthusiasm to assist us with every aspect of the trail and the surrounding village of Harpers Ferry.

“Grat Place to Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2014

Stopped in to have a look around and to introduce my girlfriend to what the AT is about. The woman that was taking car of the place to day was very friendly and polite. She had answers to all our questions. An knowing that a person that has hike the AT is working here make it so much better experience and to ad to any questions that you may have about the AT and the area if you are hiking thru. Thanks for the great and warm welcome and the tour of the headquarters.

“Half Way Mark”

A must stop . . . whether you are hiking the AT or just passing through the Harpers Ferry area. In the summer we saw a mixture of hikers and area visitors. In the winter, it is a warm haven while walking down into Harpers Ferry.

“Whether it's a pilgrimage, or a quick stop, don't miss it!”

Whether you're hiking all 2000+ miles of the AT, or just want some insight into one of the world's most famous hiking trails, this is the place to come. From the ATC Headquarters, the care of the entire trail is coordinated.

They have a small, but informative display about the AT, the highlight of which is a large 3D topo map of the entire trail from Maine to Georgia. There is a hiker lounge is the back where you can flip through volumes of people who are trying to hike the whole thing, either all at once, or in pieces. If you backpack in, you even have the option of adding yourself to the book, even if you plan on taking 80 years to do it (hey, that's only 28 miles a year!).

The bookstore/gift shop is top notch - maps and guidebooks for every section of the AT to a plethora of AT Thru-Hiker Memoirs to t-shirts!

The folks that work there are always friendly and helpful. I've seen them take the time out to talk to Boy Scouts (thanks for letting us invade your store), to answer questions about where to go hiking nearby or far away, help iron out a hike plan, or to simply find out where you've been so far and what it was like. It's been a great experience every time I've gone.

Everyone who works here is great! Very friendly and helpful. I especially loved being able to share drinks and snacks with my own thru-hikers and some others who were there!
