I have to admit I ended up cancelling my reservation upon arrival. The rooms were dark, there is no pool there even though there are pictures online that would make it appear so and the reservations clerk thought there was, and when I arrived at noon and check in was at 3p.m. there was no one in the office, just a sign saying come back at 3, which meant in 103 degree weather I had no where to check my bags to keep them out of the hot car. They would not refund my one night stay deposit, and it was dry dusty discouraging in appearance. While others have reviewed it well, I would not stay there.

We stayed two nights at this hotel, now named the Badlands Lodge and owned by the same company as the Cedar Pass Lodge just up the road in Badlands National Park. This hotel is two story with exterior balcony serving as the access to rooms. The view from most rooms is to the north towards the park and is beautiful. The place is popular so be sure to reserve ahead. Most rooms have two queen beds. Towels, linens and pillows are new and plentiful. Free continental breakfast is included and consists of cereal, toast and muffins, juice, fruit, and coffee or tea. One bag of ice comes with the room as well (no ice machine). A/C kept our rooms almost too cool during the recent 100 degree plus heat wave in this area. This hotel is far from a "roughing it" experience but you do get a sense of being close to nature during your stay. There were insects, mostly flies, around the hotel but this was the case throughout much of the Many different types of birds nest all around the hotel and they must be there partly due to the insects. Bring binoculars and plan to sit outside your room and enjoy. WiFi is free and works well in rooms.

Room Tip: Front desk closes at 9 pm so call ahead if you will arrive late.

There are not a lot of places to stay here and this one is very convenient located outside the park. We had beautiful views of the Badlands. We were on the second floor, rooms 21 & 22. The rooms were very spacious, clean with very comfortable beds. Our beds were seemed brand new so I'm surprised another poster said they were bad. While it may not look very grand, it was a very nice stay. The staff is very friendly, and you get a free bag of ice with every room, helpful to keep our beer cold while we sat on the balcony outside our room admiring the view. Had dinner at cedar pass lodge, the Fry bread was great! There's a mini grocery store and bar a mile down the road where we could buy beer and snacks. The continental breakfast was decent too. More than I expected with breads, bagels and English muffins, yogurt, fruit, various cereals and juices. Air conditioning was great after a long hot day in the park. I would definitely recommend as a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: Second floor has best views, new beds in 21 & 22

The location is why Badlands Inn can be rated a 3 out of 5. It's located just outside Badlands Park...your location couldn't be better actually.

The room pros of the room is that it had a refrigerator. The cons were that the bed was very worn and because of that you could feel the springs through it, but the biggest thing is that there were dead flies all over the room I found at least 15 dead flies)! I understand that the area is filled with flies (it really was) and I understand that rooms are sometimes closed up for a period of time and that there may have been flies caught in there and died. But, couldn't someone have gone in the room to check it out and make sure everything was up to par before sending us into the dead bug room?

The location is well worth it, just be prepared that the room leaves a whole lot to be desired.

I'll just reiterate what others have said, that the location is the reason you're paying $100 a night here. It's basically a $70/night room. Very basic, but clean. (Minus the flies. We killed 13 of them after entering the room the first time, then made sure we didn't leave the door open at all because there's a whole bunch of them waiting to get inside.)

Very laid back atmosphere. When we checked in shortly after 3, the guy on duty hadn't yet assigned rooms for the night. So we got the pick of the litter, which was nice. No issues with noise (I think the AC unit drowned out anything that could've been heard from other rooms.) And, as has been stated many times, you can see the entrance to Badlands Park from your balcony, which is awesome.

We'd certainly stay here again, but wish the price was about $20 less per night.

Room Tip: Upper floor

This motel is a bit on the tired side... but the rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, there is air conditioning (so important in July!), and the free continental breakfast was excellent.

We just spent 2 nights here and would willingly stay here again. It's just outside the Badlands National Park and is a perfect headquarters for exploring the park and nearby attractions.

The location is unbeatable - and that's really the best that can be said for this place. If not for the location and lack of competition, this place would be rated lower. On the plus side, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are clean if highly dated. What it boils down to is this - if you want a luxury experience - you are in the wrong place. If you want to be in your bed within 2 minutes of leaving a night ranger program in Badlands National Park - this is your place. I'd stay here again - because of, you guessed it, the location.
