Owner description: Five-miles round-trip, this trail is fairly easy compared with many other hikes in the park.

My 67-year-old legs didn't make it all the way to the top, but it is a fairly easy trail to hike compared to other trails in Big Bend. The people returning we met along the way said it was well-worth the hike. The view was absolutely beautiful.

Our kids, ages 8 and 10, thought this was going to be one of those activities only the grown ups like, but we all loved it, including them. The mountains were so green and full of life, flowers, trees... Spectacular views. The trail is very easy, well maintained, no real steep areas. We saw a full grown Big Bend Patch Nosed snake (non-venomous) slither across the trail in front of us. We gave our daughter the camera to snap macro pix of all the beautiful flowers, she loved it!

This was our first day of hiking in the Chiso's so we asked a ranger which hike he would suggest. We took his advice and chose the Lost Mine Trail. The weather was perfect, and the views were breathtaking. When we got to the last trail marker we could see there was more to the trail. Don't come all this way and than turn around at this marker. We continued on for about 100 yards or until falling off the mountain was the only option. The views from this spot are fantastic. On our way down the trail we hit the jackpot. A young black bear came slowly up the side of the mountain, checking out logs and munching on grass. We backed up the trail so we wouldn't disturb him. As he crossed the trail in front of us he gave us a disinterested glance, we took photos, and then he continued up the mountain, dinner uninterrupted. We were thrilled. If you only have time for one hike in the Chiso's, listen to the ranger.

This will take about 3-hours round-trip, and it will get you sweating if the sun is out. The view is constantly gorgeous though and there are benches to rest on at various points in the ascent. Getting to the top and going to the end is DEFINITELY worth it.

This is a rigorous hike that takes you up into the Chisos with lots of long views of major peaks along the trail and a fine vista at the top. Start early in warmer weather since you are in sun most of the way up. Trekking poles are helpful since there is a lot of loose rock on the trail.
