“Great Drive (if you're into being immersed into the Everglades)”

I've read a number of not to flattering reviews of the Loop Road. Too bad. The Loop Road isn't full of entertaining, exciting events. What it is full of is the feel of the everglades. We spent forever on the Road. Essentially, the road traverses through a cypress forest. It's a dirt road with foliage on either side. Every so often there's an opening with a pond off to the side of the road. Most usually in the pond area there are alligators and birds walking around the perimeter of the pond. In the road and trees are numerous birds. We stopped often and peered into the trees and at the ponds. Towards the end of the Loop, the road goes through a 'residential' area where there is a scattering of houses. Some quite old.

Not a drive if you're in a hurry. Or want a lot of excitement.

Lots to see along this historic road...gators galore !! Highly recommend !! It’s not a place you want to get off the road or have an auto malfunction

If you have the time, I would strongly recommend driving the loop road. It's a great way to see the wildlife in its natural setting. One of the stops on the loop road- Sweetwater Strand - is an exceptional spot to see wildlife and natural habitat. I would stop at the visitor center for directions and advice. Make sure to bring water and food and make a bathroom stop before hand. There's none of that on the loop road.

Be advised that the turnoffs from the Tamiami Trail road to the Big Cypress driving loop trail are not well marked. Yes, there's a sign for Monroe Station, but it doesn't mention the loop drive. The other end is also discrete, beginning in a residential (Native American?) area. Once on the driving trail, the views are at the culverts, where you can see into the swamp. Lots of long-legged birds of various species are wading, perching or flying overhead. Countless air plants growing on the swamp trees. Flowers. About the gators, although you will probably see one on the side of the road, you'll see many more if you step out of your car and look into the swamp. Nevertheless, someone with mobility issues will be able to see some wonderful things from the comfort of their car.

If your laid back and enjoy wildlife and birding then this is the road for you. Pack some snacks and drinks. My husband and I loved going along and spying the alligators, turtles, and birds. Took about 2 hours to drive the 29 miles.
