My stay at the Howard Johnson was the most aggravating experience ever... first let me start by saying before it was Howard Johnson when it was Best Western I had no problems, until the new staff and new rules.. I dont mind rules but the late night staff seem to have made up rules of (her) own. NOW AGAIN me and my friend ALWAYS choose this motel, I love the area, I love housekeeping staff, I love their rooms PERIOD! one night I was at the front desk trying to rent a room for me and two friends (a double), (and the night (new) front desk clerk) instead of asking how im doing after I said "hello im trying to get a room" first thing she says Is "can I have your id, let's see if your on the NO rent list" shocked because this was the first time I heard of such a thing here I say "why would I be on there I never had any problems"... I blew that off.. checking in my room , no trash bags in the waste baskets and toilet paper was low. On top of that my toilet was stopped up, I call front desk the lady then tells me to come get a plunger and try and fix it myself.. that didn't work so I call back to front desk and ask for another room because we couldn't stay in a room without working facilities PLUS we paid our money for a comfortable stay like the "Howard Johnson" motel guaranteed she WOULD NOT give me one until the security guard had to actually try and plunge it himself, then after that my request for another room was granted. So I sent my friend to get the key to the new room, Upon transferring our belongings to the new room I was stopped by the clerk who was rushing us to get our things out the previous room, Rushing I leave a cosmetic purse in the first room so I call the clerk to see if I can go get my purse, once again she sends the security, I had no luck in retrieving my purse because it was no longer in there.. in the new room we had NO towels so another friend went to get towels from the lobby, my friend came back and said that the clerk said she couldn't be in the room because she wasn't in the system, we are regular guest here at the motel so this was really upsetting. The clerk demanded that we all show license or we leave! One of my friends didn't have her license she has a passport (which she has used to booked a room there) she refuse to accept that. She was really making our stay difficult. We ended up leaving after paying for a night there we came out or pocket twice with no refund!
Another incident with my husband... (same clerk) he goes in to rent a room and she tells him they no longer accept cash that we had to book it online so we go put the money on a debit card and then she goes on to tells us that we had to wait for her system to find it when we had the confirmation number and receipt. I would understand if her doings was normal procedures but it wasn't. We felt like she didn't want us in the motel, we also felt like we was a bother to her. Her customer service sucks and she needs to be replaced! Other than HER Howard Johnson would be a VERY COMFORTABLE STAY!

Been staying here also my other group of people that work with me and we have been treated great rooms clean.I recommended to everyone to stop by and stay.lobby clean they also put out snacks for you to enjoy not just breakfast.

This hotel was recently taken over by Howard Johnson's. It used to be the Best Western. It appears that the Best Western Beaumont ratings are no longer shown on Trip Advisor. The ratings were on the website yesterday but now have been pulled down. This is possibly because Howard Johnson didn't want anyone to see the ratings, which weren't very good.

I have learned my lesson to NEVER go to a hotel without checking trip advisor first.

We found this hotel in the coupon book that we picked up at the Texas welcome center. We usually like Best Westerns for the most part and decided not to check the ratings. Big mistake. When we arrived at the address, we were surprised to see the sign covered up and a temporary sign for Howard Johnson's. We decided to stay in any case.

After checking in, we went to the room, #134. Upon opening the door, we were hit with an overwhelming odor of locker room mixed with stale tobacco smoke, overlaid by a sour mold or mildew odor. We almost went back to the front desk to get our money back but we were so tired that we decided to take a closer look before leaving. (second mistake). I found that the odor was blowing out of the heater unit so I turned it off. This helped somewhat and we hoped the odor would go away soon. It did become less obvious, partly because the heater was no longer pumping the odor into the room and also because we were getting used to it.

We didn't sleep well because of the lack of ventilation (the heater was off) and because the odor did make for poor sleeping conditions.

The room itself was pretty run down, the bed was good. The luggage rack was broken, the towel rod in the shower room was bent, and there was a bug crawling around in the tub. We didn't use the tub, considering that the smell would offset any benefits of a shower anyway.

Employees struck us as indifferent and unfriendly. I did tell the front desk about the smell in the room, so that they could get it fixed. She gave me $10 off the rate, but even then, the rate was still higher than what I could have gotten at a much higher rated hotel elsewhere in Beaumont. So much for going on Brand name, from now on, it's Trip Advisor first.

All day long as we drove across Texas, we have enjoyed whiffs of the musty odor on our clothes and in the duffels that we kept in that room over nite. We expect the odor will stay with us until we can get proper showers and find a Laundromat for our clothes.

I do not know whether this smell is in all the rooms or only the one we stayed in. If it is in only that one room, I am surprised that HoJo didn't pull it out of circulation. Unless they fix this, every time they put a guest into it, they are going to lose a customer.

Room Tip: Ask to look first, before paying.
