“Hip Boutique Hotel”
Reviewed 1 August 2011

My mother, sisters, nieces and I took a long weekend trip to Asheville to go to Biltmore Estate Christmas candlelight tour. We really enjoyed this small boutique hotel in downtown. Don't even have to bring much with you - we are used to bringing our special coffees - instead, save yourself the trouble and step downstairs and get a fresh cup by the barista. For a while, we sat in the small lobby drinking cappuccino in our PJs by the twinkling Christmas tree. Our rooms were lovely with a beautiful bathroom and no fears of creepy or dirty anything. We will be back! P.S. We did notice a few guests brought their pets, but beware - there's really nowhere to walk them being downtown.

Hotel Indigo sticks out like a sore thumb in downtown Asheville, which is full of low-rises and older architecture. This hotel is a high-rise full of glass and steel with great views of the mountains in the area.

After having been on our road trip for a while and staying at budget-conscious places, we decided to spend a little more to stay at this hotel and we're pretty glad we did.

We got a king room with a view on the 7th floor, and the room is probably bigger than most apartments in New York. The design sensibility is modern and funky, reminiscent of the hipper style that HGTV programs like Color Splash evangelizes -- cerulean walls, lime green curtains, dark laminated floors and huge showers. The bed was comfortable and piled high with pillows, always a huge plus.

The bathroom was similarly contemporary with muted green tiles and lovely mosaic tiles in the shower, although I had a few grouses in this area -- the sink was too small, which was strange as there was plenty of counter space available. The quality of the toilet paper was totally crappy for a hotel of these standards (hard yet shredded too easily). Okay, I know it's just toilet paper and I'm nit-picking but when you use Aveda bath products and Green Mountain coffee, shouldn't the toilet paper be of similarly high quality?

The furniture is retro-funky and looked good but I don't think the quality is first rate, as the console and writing desk, though they looked aesthetically pleasing, were rickety. Maybe they cut corners on the quality of the furniture as they change them in a few short years. At least the bed's good.

Wifi was available for free and quick, so that's another plus. Service-wise, the staff were efficient and polite but a little distant, which isn't a problem for me as I prefer not having to share my life story with total strangers. Parking is also free, which is great as we could walk around without having to pay for parking downtown.

There is a one-time $50 fee for dogs in the room and there isn't much green areas around the hotel for the dog. But I think our pooch was fine with it with all the downtown walking he could do so it wasn't too much of a problem.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about your stay with us! We're happy you enjoyed your stay. Our staff truely loves our guests!
A quick clarification on our furniture- it was manufactured by Drexel Heritage and is made of 100% wood. We must double check and make sure the screws have not loosened.
We hope to see you again soon!

Growing up, I used to come up to asheville and stay at the grove park. My parents were never big fans because it's a bit snobby, but I loved the views and the grounds of the hotel. The indigo doesn't have the ground obviously, but it does have the same views without any of the pretentiousness. Starwood is building an aloft on the other side of downtown, which may arguably be a little better location, but unless it builds a high-rise, it won't have the same views shared by the indigo.

We had a corner room, which wasn't spacious like other corner rooms I've stayed in, but it had a very open feeling with large windows on two walls. The bathroom was large with an enormous shower, which was also beautiful. The bed was comfortable, though the bedding was just average.

Parking is tight, but convenient with free garage parking and very easy elevator access to the room. We didn't eat at the "restaurant" (I put in quote because it looks like a food bar) mainly because it looked like a cafe but served very complicated dishes. Such places are usually not a success. But it does have room service if you want it!

The staff is incredibly friendly. All in all, currently the best place to stay in asheville. You can walk to everything downtown.

Room Tip: Book a corner room

Downtown Asheville-fun, wacky, and historic is right outside the door of this spa hotel. The staff was helpful with every question and their suggestions were right-on. The riooms had fabulous views of the mountains and spa-type showers. I highly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: rooms facing the mountains also may get some of the highway noise.

I knew this hotel was part of the Holiday Inn group and had expectations for something akin to a HI, but was pleasantly surprised by the Indigo. It's in a cool, tall modern building on the lip of downtown Asheville -- we admired the building from afar before we realized that it was the hotel, and were similarly pleased as we pulled up, checked in and saw our room. We were in a 8th floor corner room facing away from downtown . . . great mountain views and room configured to enjoy them from the beds, desk and easy chair. The bedding was terrific, bathrooms large and well-outfitted, widescreen good with a lot of channels, parking easy, and lobby bar/restaurant great for what it is. Wifi strong and free, as it should be. Decent health club.

The only cons were few: the bathroom smelled slightly of mildew (there seemed to be no exhaust fan (or one that worked anyway) so that might contribute to the problem. It was tough to find an available outlet in our room, and the shower pressure was unimpressive. And it has the dreaded window HVAC unit, which in my experience are loud and often heat or cool unevenly. But those are minor nits compared to the overall dandy experience at the hotel.

Great location -- an easy walk to any restaurant or shop in downtown Asheville, and easy on/off the highway as well.

The price is pretty high along the spectrum of hotels in the area-- you pay for the style and location -- but shouldn't be a deal breaker as you do get good value for the money. On previous trips in the area we stayed at the Grove Park Inn where the overall experience is great but our room was below average. We enjoyed the combination of easy access to downtown and a cool hotel that the Indigo offers. This is particularly true if you're in town for Belle Chere -- a huge street festival every July. No parking hassles and easy access to all the activities.

Room Tip: Higher floor, corner room!

We stayed here one night on our way to Charleston. We had a king and queen view room. Both were decorated very mod, extremely clean and spacious, had Aveda products and very comfortable beds. I loved the wood floors and the fact that pets are welcome. We had room service for dinner and it was a little pricey but the food was great. The staff was excellent. Very welcoming to our family of seven. Overall, I'd say it's comparable to the Park Hyatt in Chicago just a little plush but at the same price. This will definitely be our new place to stay when passing through Asheville.

I have stayed at the Asheville Hotel Indigo several times on business. The Hotel Indigo has my complete loyalty. I love the modern aesthetic. The staff are helpful and unpretentious. The room service is tasty and doesn't cost and arm and a leg. Their business services are easy to use. The best feature in my opinion is that it is an easy walk to anything you might want to do downtown. The only two complaints I have is that sometimes on weekdays there is no bellman, (!) and I wish they had a few healthy grab-and-go breakfasts for business travelers. You either have to order from the menu and wait or settle for a pastry.

Room Tip: When you reserve, there are mountain view rooms and rooms with a view of AT&T's parking lot.
