“Enjoyable alternative.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 October 2012

My partner and I enjoyed the homey atmosphere of this old house as an alternative to a motel/hotel. We felt very welcome by the staff person who met us at the door when we called upon arrival...even though it's designated as a youth hostel and we're no longer officially youth. Our room was very basic, but clean and quiet. The hall bath worked out fine and the open kitchen came in handy as a place to sit and make a cup of tea. The outside was a little unkempt, but we were very comfortable staying here and walking to downtown restaurants, bakeries, theaters, etc. We would like to stay here again on our next visit to Asheville.

I had stayed in the Arthaus Hostel several years ago and found this place in the same block by looking for that place. The same man owns or manages both, apparently. Both times I found the location ideal, the house and bedroom and kitchen and bathroom and common spaces clean, airy, well-maintained. I'd recommend it to anybody who doesn't want a sterile motel/hotel franchise experience.

Room Tip: Choose a room that sleeps the number in your party early or you'll have to take one larger than...

This hostel was the best for our budget and overall stay in asheville. We stayed at a crappy motel 6 the night before which was about $60 for the night, seemed really seedy and was over 15min from downtown. The hostel was an 11min walk from its side of town to the other and the owners were extremely friendly and gave us all kinda of info about places to go and how to get to them. The hostel has shared rooms and private rooms all for a good price but we payed a little extra to get a private bungalow that they have behind the house. It was spacious and comfortable and best of all we could safely walk to anywhere downtown. The private rooms are cheaper than most hotels with access to living areas and a full kitchen. The bungalow was inexpensive as well and comes with a full bathroom and small kitchen area. We will definitely stay there again on our next trip through Asheville.

The owner was very accommodating and friendly. The location made me feel very safe as well as provide a less than ten minute walk to downtown. The cleanliness was very adequate though there is some notable aging with the home itself but that did not contribute to any aspect of my stay. Would absolutely stay again and recommend to my family and friends.

The Asheville Hostel lives up to its name. It is your typical hostel, so if you are expecting a bed and breakfast or a fancy hotel, this is not the place. But if you are looking for a clean room, comfortable bed and quiet place to sleep, this is a great choice.
There are 5 rooms total and 1 small apartment out back. The top floor has three rooms, one of which is used by the live in staff for the hostel. The bottom floor has two rooms, a sitting room out front and a kitchen. There is a shared bathroom on each floor, and despite the top floor being full, we never had to wait to use the bathroom.
We stayed in the couples room which has a single queen sized bed, an AC unit, fan and TV. Its very spartan, but was exceptionally clean. The colors were bright and cheery. The bathroom was painted equally cheery colors and kept very clean. Despite being close to downtown, the actual street was quiet so sleeping late was not a problem. The kitchen is shared by all in the house, and you can make pancakes and coffee or tea for breakfast and for smokers there is an outside area with chairs and tables.
Ian, the person on staff when we got there was charming showing us around the house, letting us know where everything was, and giving us some tips on where to go in the area.
Even for a middle aged couple with some adventure in mind, this is a good place. We are both in our mid to late 40's and both had no problem staying here. A good place to stay in Asheville thats more pleasant then a chain hotel and less expensive then a B&B.

When the online reservation system wouldn't work, I called the phone number listed on their website. I was told, rather rudely, that he couldn't make me a reservation because he was shopping with his kids, and I should just come by when we got to town. I decided to call back later that afternoon and was, again, told to "not worry about it" and just come in. I said that I wanted to be sure there would be space, that there was a big difference between "it'll be fine" and "you have a room waiting for you." He mocked me over the phone, so I hung up and we stayed elsewhere. Just because it's non-traditional lodging doesn't mean tht basic customer service can just go out the window.

If you call 5 times within 45 minutes demanding to make a reservation for that night & are told to simply show up, and we will meet you there, since there are 5 rooms left, & we don't have access to a computer at the moment, & you say that you are 1 to 2 hours away, but you insist on making a reservation even though we explain multiple times that there is no way for us to do so, and don't believe what we are saying to be true, then please, we agree, don't bother.

It should also be mentioned that once we were near a computer, we attempted to make a reservation for these individuals, but they said that they were no longer interested.

If you believe that being told that we are shopping for back to school supplies for the kids is "being rude", then this review is more of a reflection about you then us. By "mocking me", this person is referring to our response of "You have a room waiting for you". Because she did, but didn't believe us..

We apologize if you experienced problems with the reservation system. It is a great system, but they are constantly updating it, and some things get broken in the process from time to time. We are not sure if this person's card was declined, or what since she didn't want to discuss the issues she was having, only that she had to make a reservation right then.

Our advice would be to book in advance, and not day of. Having a reservation secured is much more predictable than taking chances on showing up and seeing what happens. We are a non-traditional lodging, and we do excel in customer service, but we are not all things to all people. We love our regular guests, and they seem to get it.

Based on various complications of trying to do things last minute, we may only allow bookings in advance in the future.

Chose to stay here 1 night in family room for Bele Chere weekend, against my husband's objections, and even he had to admit it was perfect for a quick visit. Definitely wallet friendly.

We backpacked the world in our 20s and have stayed in every kind of hostel over the years so have lots to compare to. Since we had kids, not so much. What can I say, I'm middle aged and my kids are spoiled. Kids were comfy here, even though it was their first time sharing a public bathroom. My pickiest one said he'd definitely stay again.

Location is ideal in every way. A patch of quiet even during the craziness of Bele Chere. Eye of the storm. 2 blocks to everything downtown in any direction. Superb resto's and entertainment. As others have said, BJ is helpful and reliable and reachable. Good host!

As far as hostels go this place is cozy and clean and private. Expect basic and you'll be pleased. The linens smell great and are certainly clean. There are only a couple rooms on each floor so sharing of bathroom is no issue, even if you're shy. We heard the other guests on our floor once but never saw them. Some young guys hanging out in the kitchen in the early evening (smoking I think?) but it was a Sat night on a festival weekend, so no surprise there.

This is no B&B so do not expect Martha Stewart type touches. It's like a really really decent student apartment (i.e. comfy sofas everywhere but all are covered in blankets, did not look underneath!). We arrived during heat wave and fans/window AC were going 24/7. Loud but effective.

Room Tip: Family room (upstairs, away from common areas but next to shared bathroom) was quiet and cozy for ou...
