Asheville is THE most pathetically overrated city in the southeast (aside from Greenville, SC, though they are two very different entities, somewhat polarized from each other). A lot of people who think Asheville is "IT" really don't know it all that well. It is a city being killed by its own success. That being said, John Cram's contributions to the city are positive and foundational to any arts culture that might exist there. The Blue Spiral is always pretty fresh and is a nice counterpart to New Morning Gallery, which still reflects the arts-crafts context from which it emerged a couple of decades earlier. Blue Spiral mainly shows art and fine craft from the southeast, from a range of artists, emerging to established. It is a good anchor, in place for the past couple of decades, while many efforts in Asheville have come and gone.
