This is one of only places in the world to explore this type of biome, known as a bald. The forest clears out and a beautiful and surprising grassland thrives. This very unique landscape is worth a visit!

Nice place to stop and stretch your legs on the short hike up to the look out. Great 360 degree views of the mountains.

If you are looking for a quick hike with amazing views, this is the perfect place to go. Craggy is popular for its Rhododendrons but I like it best because of the beautiful view of the sunset. There is lots of space at the top as well as a couple of different viewing levels so don't worry too much about it being crowded. If it is super foggy there isn't a lot to see but it is sort of neat to be above the clouds! I would definitely recommend Craggy if you are in the Asheville area.

The Visitors Center was very small. The water was turned off for the indoor bathrooms. The trees were stunted and covered in lichen. It was cold and windy. Most of this is due to the high elevation and traveling at the end of October.

The parking area is north of Asheville, NC. The elevation is 5400+ feet. Travel a little farther north to the upper parking area and take a short hike to the peak. When you reach the overlook, elevation 6000+ feet, you feel like you are at the top of the world. You are looking down on everything nearby.

This is a great location to view sunsets - assuming the weather cooperates. Enjoy...
