Asheville, North Carolina is a small town by many standards. I was delighted to discover that in spite of its size, Asheville has some of the artistic offerings of a much larger city. One of the town's jewels is the Asheville Lyric Opera.
I was astounded at the level of performance quality this group commands. Granted they are not the New York Metropolitan Opera, but they were amazingly good. The leads were all strong and the supporting cast was great as well. The set was creative and well done, the interpretations were solid and the over all experience was surprisingly satisfying.
This group is putting on much better performances than should be possible in a town this size. The audience was very loyal and enthusiastic. They love their opera in Asheville and they come out to support it. Buy your ticket early to get a good seat.
According to their website, they usually perform a traditional production in October and April and then they have a couple of other performances through out the year including a Gala of sorts toward the end of January.
This is a great opportunity to introduce a new generation to opera or have a more intimate experience with the art form. They put on solid performances and even the most discriminating ear will find something delightful to enjoy with this company. If you have never experienced opera, this is a great place to try it out. You will have a great experience.
I highly recommend this group.
