The Center for Craft's new space downtown on Broadway is unlike anything else in Asheville. While there are a lot of galleries and shops packed into the relatively small downtown area, the Center's Benchspace gallery feels airy and modern, while still retaining the feel of the original building. Part of the openness of the gallery is probably because it feels a little bit like an exhibition space that shows artwork and promotes ideas about craft and makers (and you can buy art directly from the artist, which seems pretty cool). The actual Center for Craft is a non-profit that does a lot of great stuff, which they'll talk to you about if you stop in. Overall, the gallery is definitely something to check out if you're walking around downtown, and I found the people working there to be really friendly.
