Everything about the Applewood Manor is well thought-out. No details are overlooked. The breakfasts are exceptional and the inn is very comfortable. We look forward to staying at the Applewood Manor again.

Room Tip: I think that we stayed in the Macintosh room - not sure. Just ask for Larry's favorite room. Th...

This place was just what my wife and I wanted for our anniversary vacation. When the weather was poor we just hung out in the gorgeous Winesap room that we booked or in the comfortable living room. The 3-course breakfasts were amazing and didn't leave us hungry till 1pm and with the b&b so close to downtown we could walk to one of the many enjoyable restaurants when we did get hungry.
Nancy and Larry definitely gave us a good reason to go back for another romantic anniversary.

We loved this B&B, my husband myself and our 17 year old daughter stayed two nights. The room was very spacious and the owners spoiled my daughter with great breakfast... Now she expects me to have breakfast every morning just like the applewood manner! Lol. Our daughter loved the swing and hammock in the back yard . The only thing I would complain about is the AC , it is very warm and we did not sleep very well due to the temperature ... We normally sleep with a temp of 68 so if you like 73 to 75 then you will be comfortable....

My hubby and I spent two nights in the Macintosh room which has a very spacious bathroom including a jetted tub, private 2nd floor balcony with sliding Adirondack-style double chair, and TV with hundreds of channels. I know it is difficult to retrofit old houses with air conditioners that are aesthetic and noiseless but the Merrills have done it! There is a Panasonic unit fit into the upper wall that very silently blows cool air and is controlled by an electronic remote. We were very comfortable on the hottest day of the year! The house is a little hard to find as it is tucked back into an old Montford Neighborhood. Don't use Google Maps to find it. We got there using our AAA Asheville map. You can walk to downtown Asheville in about 20-30 minutes. The route takes you through the up and coming neighborhood and crosses a highway near the old Bascilica. We had a great meal at Bouchon. The house has several lovely indoor and outdoor sitting areas (outdoors with porch swings etc) so you can sit and read quietly without seeing any other guests if you please. They offer sodas and wine from 5-6 each day along with a cheese plate and chips and salsa/humus. This was very welcome after a long day of travel or touring. Breakfasts are filling and delicious. Nancy serves fresh fruit with homemade granola and yogurt as first course. Then comes a piece of fresh quick bread (lime, peacan etc) with cream cheese and main course is a hardy dish (omelet one day and Dutch Baby the next). I could not eat it all either day. The fresh orange juice was great as well. The very best part of staying at the Applewood Manor Inn is the keepers. Nancy and Larry are genuinely nice people that make you feel at home and part of the extended family. While Nancy cooks Larry serves breakfast and adds his warmth and humor to the meal. We had great conversations during our meals with Larry and other guests and look forward to returning in the fall or winter!

Room Tip: Some rooms have tiny baths. Check the website for more information if that is important to you.

Host Larry greeted us with a welcoming smile and invited us for afternoon snacks before we even had a chance to unload our suitcases from the car. He seems to love his role as Asheville's only native innkeeper and made us feel at home right away. Breakfast by Nancy was a 3-course dream with a fruit course, a bread course, and the main event both mornings we stayed. There are walking trails within easy reach of the Inn that lead to restaurants so the car can stay parked if you don't mind hiking the hills of Asheville. We stayed in the Northern Spy and the room was lovely; but the bathroom modest. Larry apologized for the size of the shower. If you want more space, consider another room as the ones we spied after a few couples moved out where very generously sized.

We had a great weekend at Applewood Manor. Friendly hosts and guests, perfect location for walking downtown, very cute and well-behaved pets and a nice variety of breakfast choices.
We also loved having a balcony to enjoy the good weather.
Instead of asking for an optional housekeeping gratuity at checkout, it might be nice to put an envelope in the room or just include in the rate. We enjoyed our visit very much.

Room Tip: Loved a room with a balcony

Larry and Nancy have perfected the B&B experience. The house is beautifully decorated and maintained. The appetizers and wine were much appreciated each night from 5-6, and the breakfasts were amazing. Each day we were served a 3 course breakfast that was delicious and abundant. Highly recommended.
