“Everything you would expect in a wonderful B&B”
Reviewed 2 August 2011

There are many B7B's to choose from in Asheville, NC's historic district. Our kids chose this one in a gift to us and it was a wonderful gift. James is so very hospitable and knowledgeable about the area; his recommendations are excellent. But caution: unless you are coming to Asheville for their annual end-of-July street festival, best to choose a different weekend.

The historical home is a short walk from downtown on a well-shaded street. It is beautifully furnished with antiques accented with asian pieces from the Murray’s days of living in Asia. The ambiance was comfy-cozy.

Our two rooms - the Goldfinch and Mockingbird - were both great with large bathrooms that included jacuzzi tubs and shower enclosures. The mattresses were just right - not too hard, not too soft - the linens were soft, sleep-inducing and there was a competent choice of pillows. We returned from a dinner out to find a plate of homemade cookies waiting in our room (Whoopies, I believe, baked by Susan. They were great). A 24-hour coffee corner downstairs was well stocked with hot and cold drinks choices and one couldn’t walk far without passing bowls of candies.

Susan Murray stayed busy in the kitchen and the payoff came with a breakfast of marinated blackberries - tender and tasty - and a mango bread pudding worth meditating on. The coffee and juice were fresh and flavorful, the napkins linen, the New York Times current. It’s worth mentioning that Susan was very attentive to my wife’s 11 food intolerances.

In our short stay, the nicest moment was sitting on a well-shaded veranda at happy hour with a generous - and complimentary - spread of hors d’oeuvres and wines from the Biltmore estates while talking with other congenial guests and the Murrays. James Murray was a ready, well informed source for local history and sightseeing tips.

The Murrays are gifted, entertaining hosts and their inn was a serene respite on a hurried trip.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked great (we took the tour) and the rates were the best for value in our search.

We had not stayed at a B&B for many years, and it was wonderful to experience one again. Especially the Carolina B&B, as it set the bar against which future visits will be measured. Our room was comfortable and spacious and had all the little touches you might expect at a nice hotel. The breakfasts were at the same time both unusual and familiar, and certainly delicious. The ample lounging spaces made just hanging out at the B&B enjoyable. The 5:30 wine and hors d'oeurves was an unexpected delight. The question is not whether we will return to Carolina B&B but how soon. Hats off to James and Susan - they got it right!

What a gem... If you've always found that where you stay on a trip colors your memories - stay at Carolina B&B in Asheville. We arrived in the afternoon to the aroma of freshly baked biscotti, so good we left with the recipe. Homemade brownies (left with this recipe too) waited for us on a bedside table when we returned to sleep. And we slept so well! The owner told us that guests have actually asked for the make and model of the mattresses. The owners were charming, solicitous about our needs - even acommodated two relatives for breakfast with us. Oh, and what a perfect breakfast - both mornings we were there - fresh, yummy and gourmet. Foodie heaven - we bought one of the two cookbooks they've published. And last but not least, the toiletries were top of the line. I'm going to be purchasing them to use regularly.

We stayed at the Carolina Bed and Breakfast during our vacation trip to Asheville and it was wonderful. Susan and James were great hosts. My wife has a special diet and Susan was very accommodating with the breakfasts as well as the evening wine and snack time. We stayed in the Hummingbird room and thoroughly enjoyed our time in the house. The front porch swing was our favorite place to relax. When we return to the Asheville area the Carolina Bed and Breakfast will be our choice location to stay.

The physical location is in walking distance of downtown, visitor's center, neighborhood restaurants and the Montford Park Shakespear Amphitheater. Off street parking was easily accessible and when needed spacious street parking was available(they were fully booked almost the entire time of our stay)
We enjoyed conversing with the other guests on the relaxing front porh and a variety of "scrumptious" appetizers during their evening wine(Biltmore) social. The "chit-chat" with the other guests offered an unique opportunity to learn form their experiences/adventures and trade "insider tips" between us. We watched the "fire-flies"(lightening bugs as some call them) while eating a late dinner on the porch.
Gourmet breakfasts were prepared each morning and evening treats were found in our bedroom each night. The food was delicious, but I found it a bit sweet for my personal taste. However, the plate was sent back EMPTY.
The owners, Susand and James were very friendly and James was always available to give appropriate recommendations for exploring the points of interests in the area.

We have stayed in many bed & breakfasts over the years. Each of them might achieve excellence in one or two aspects of the stay. Carolina Bed & Breakfast hit a home run with the bases loaded! Service, value, sleep quality, cleanliness, food, and environment were all top shelf. James & Susan are dedicated, talented, and informed hosts. They are a true team in the way they divide the work load. Susan did a wonderful job in providing an imaginative, inventive, and varied menu for breakfast, afternoon appetizers, and late night snacks. James is the perfect purveyor of information when it is needed. The neighborhood is historic and walkable, including to the business district. We would not think of staying anywhere else in Asheville.
