“Affordable Elegance in Asheville”
Reviewed 14 August 2013

This B & B met all our expectations for comfort and grand style.
The gardens were charming and the décor and ambience was spot on.
Our hosts Jim & Linda were friendly and helpful.
It was a bit further away from downtown Asheville than anticipated, and we were advised against walking back from town after 10pm, however we didn't have any problems parking and the cab service was prompt and inexpensive.
Breakfast was served with other guests sitting around a very grand table, and was most enjoyable.
Unfortunately, the shower in our room (we stayed in 'Margaret Grace') was terrible, with the water barely dribbling out, warm one minute and cold the next, and the 'fluffy towels' were about as absorbent as glass. If there is one thing travellers look forward to at the end of a long day, its a strong, hot shower. This was the only disappointment.

The Lion and the Rose b&b is a delightful home in the historic Montford area that is conveniently located to the visitor center where you have access to the trolley tours. This is important because driving in downtown Asheville can be difficult, especially if you want to stop (aka, park) and explore the area. The hosts are warm and gracious. The breakfasts were fabulous. My favorite part was sitting on the front porch, sipping a beverage, while enjoying the views from the porch. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

This was our first time staying in a B&B and because we are in our 20s, we were a little skeptical on whether this would be good for us on a tight budget. It was the best decision we could have made and worth every penny! We stayed in the very spacious room on the top floor and enjoyed the lavish decorations of the house.
Breakfast was beyond superb. Every morning we were excited to find out what we were having that day and were never disappointed. The chef knows what he's doing!
Location was great because it was a walk away from the botanical gardens and downtown area and a close drive to the Biltmore.
The a/c was a window unit but it worked just fine and sometimes we would just open a window instead since the night air was perfect (even in July/August!)
Would definitely love to stay here again and highly recommend it!

A few years ago I ended my review of the Lion and Rose with the comment that we would surely look forward to a return visit at the earliest opportunity. Having now had that pleasure again, it's a delight to report that the epitome of graciousness continues in this jewel of a house on Asheville's historic Montford Ave. It is difficult to decide what was the most gratifying aspect of our stay--the inviting leisure on the large porch overlooking beautiful gardens, refreshed by a cool mountain breeze? the stunningly appointed interior of the house? the breakfasts created with a care and creativity that made the meal seem almost "curated"? or the geniality of the hosts, warm and friendly, but respectful of privacy, too? Happily it is a decision I don't need to make, for all of the aspects linger in equal fondness.

By all means, this is the best B&B experience we've had anywhere, and that it has been so now twice suggests the impression is not a fluke. Can't wait to go back! (Save me a seat on the porch!)

This is an excellent place from which to explore Asheville. To be honest Asheville has become a difficult place to navigate by car , particularly the downtown area. The Lion and the Rose is within two blocks of the Asheville visitor center from which two trolley tours originate. These tours eliminate the need to use car to explore the downtown area. There is also an interesting restaurant a block and a half from the B&B
The proprietors are were very helpful in making restaurant reservations. They also make you feel at home without being too intrusive. The breakfast was good. I would have preferred the usual eggs, bacon and grits and would suggest that B&B operators be more flexible with there menu.

Wonderful inn in historic Montford. Jim and Linda are excellent hosts. The house was stunning and room comfortable very clean. It was the little details that made the stay: fresh terry robes, coffee/tea/water and treats available to guests 24/7, a small service of coffee/tea left at the bedroom door each morning, even the dish of chocolates in our room that stayed full throughout the stay. I felt like royalty! The Montford neighborhood is a lovely place to walk about with the large well-maintained houses. Jim and Linda certainly take care to make their home one of the gems in the neighborhood with a lovely sitting area on the porch, lush flowers in the front lawn and a water fountain out back. The breakfast was superb. Jim and LInda took great care to not only describe the meal, but also make sure to consider each guests preferences and food allergies. The delicious meal helped get our touring day off to a great start! Choose the Lion and the Rose, you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Holger-Neilson room. It is the only room without a footboard on the queen bed. For...

We really enjoyed our stay at the Lion and Rose this summer. It's a beautiful place and walking distance to downtown Asheville. Jim and Linda were so pleasant and the breakfast was delicious.
We've already been recommending it to our friends.(The coffee delivered to our doors at 8am is a nice touch.)
