My husband and I have stayed at bed and breakfast establishments throughout the world, be it Europe, South Africa, Ecuador or the United States. The Reynolds Mansion is right at the top! This Asheville jewel represents the epitome of customer service, delicious food and of being a historic building (built in the Federal style).
Billy and Mike have done a fantastic job restoring this 163 year old mansion that sits atop a hill in northern Asheville. Prior to purchasing this grand lady of Asheville, the mansion had been covered in ivy with the grounds completely overgrown (It took 78 truck loads to clear the grounds). The mansion’s wraparound porch had serious structural issues, and the interior was covered in peeling wallpaper. Upon entering their home, one feels like they stepped back in time. Some of the Reynolds family’s original possessions are on display. There are antique clocks throughout the building, including a grandfather clock on the second floor. Very old paintings adorn the walls, including one from a Louisiana plantation that seems to have a scary story behind it. One of the rooms has some beautiful instruments including a piano and a viola. We enjoyed the Dark Shadows (a gothic soap opera on ABC, from June 27, 1966 to April 2, 1971) decorations and the painting depicting Barnabas Collins in the mansion – perfect for the Halloween season. Realistic gas log fireplaces, built by an Asheville company warm up many of the rooms. Our room had a huge and fantastic wreath that Billy made when he lived in Florida. The Reynolds Mansion is perfect for Billy’s creation and was an absolute delight to see every time we entered our room.
If you want top-notch customer service, this is the place. Billy is so helpful and he is such a stitch with his tales! His breakfasts are amazing. It was a gourmet feast every morning. Everyone sits at a very long and elegant table. The attention to detail is very evident as the numerous and beautiful place settings sit among Billy’s floral creations. The staff is so attentive that my husband’s coffee cup never got below three-fourth full. Our dietary restrictions did not hinder Billy as he gave us substitutes for the pork he served everyone else. That worked out well as our Eggs Benedict were fantastic as the substitution for the pork was a delicious fried green tomato. During the day, one can help themselves to brownies and cookies. Each floor of the mansion has a Keurig coffee maker so one can have a hot cup of coffee or tea when they awaken for the day.
The Reynolds Mansion is that perfect Southern house to spend the morning and late afternoon on the wraparound porch. Both days of our stay we drank wine while sitting in the rocking chairs that overlook the Blue Ridge Mountains. The climax of our time on the front porch was watching the sun dip behind the mountain peaks and the sky fill with brilliant colors as night approached.
Please pay attention to Billy’s recommendations. They will not be the same as what is posted online, but if you follow his advice, you will be very happy. An example is a fantastic restaurant he recommended just up the road in Weaverville. Another is his choice of food tours for Asheville.
This is definitely the place to stay in Asheville. We should know as we have stayed at many places in Buncombe County. Our stay was wonderful and too short thus we plan on being back in January. Hopefully, Billy can tell us more of his stories.
