“Apex of Asheville”
Reviewed 10 October 2011

My husband and I have stayed at bed and breakfast establishments throughout the world, be it Europe, South Africa, Ecuador or the United States. The Reynolds Mansion is right at the top! This Asheville jewel represents the epitome of customer service, delicious food and of being a historic building (built in the Federal style).
Billy and Mike have done a fantastic job restoring this 163 year old mansion that sits atop a hill in northern Asheville. Prior to purchasing this grand lady of Asheville, the mansion had been covered in ivy with the grounds completely overgrown (It took 78 truck loads to clear the grounds). The mansion’s wraparound porch had serious structural issues, and the interior was covered in peeling wallpaper. Upon entering their home, one feels like they stepped back in time. Some of the Reynolds family’s original possessions are on display. There are antique clocks throughout the building, including a grandfather clock on the second floor. Very old paintings adorn the walls, including one from a Louisiana plantation that seems to have a scary story behind it. One of the rooms has some beautiful instruments including a piano and a viola. We enjoyed the Dark Shadows (a gothic soap opera on ABC, from June 27, 1966 to April 2, 1971) decorations and the painting depicting Barnabas Collins in the mansion – perfect for the Halloween season. Realistic gas log fireplaces, built by an Asheville company warm up many of the rooms. Our room had a huge and fantastic wreath that Billy made when he lived in Florida. The Reynolds Mansion is perfect for Billy’s creation and was an absolute delight to see every time we entered our room.
If you want top-notch customer service, this is the place. Billy is so helpful and he is such a stitch with his tales! His breakfasts are amazing. It was a gourmet feast every morning. Everyone sits at a very long and elegant table. The attention to detail is very evident as the numerous and beautiful place settings sit among Billy’s floral creations. The staff is so attentive that my husband’s coffee cup never got below three-fourth full. Our dietary restrictions did not hinder Billy as he gave us substitutes for the pork he served everyone else. That worked out well as our Eggs Benedict were fantastic as the substitution for the pork was a delicious fried green tomato. During the day, one can help themselves to brownies and cookies. Each floor of the mansion has a Keurig coffee maker so one can have a hot cup of coffee or tea when they awaken for the day.
The Reynolds Mansion is that perfect Southern house to spend the morning and late afternoon on the wraparound porch. Both days of our stay we drank wine while sitting in the rocking chairs that overlook the Blue Ridge Mountains. The climax of our time on the front porch was watching the sun dip behind the mountain peaks and the sky fill with brilliant colors as night approached.
Please pay attention to Billy’s recommendations. They will not be the same as what is posted online, but if you follow his advice, you will be very happy. An example is a fantastic restaurant he recommended just up the road in Weaverville. Another is his choice of food tours for Asheville.
This is definitely the place to stay in Asheville. We should know as we have stayed at many places in Buncombe County. Our stay was wonderful and too short thus we plan on being back in January. Hopefully, Billy can tell us more of his stories.

Just returned from a trip to The Reynolds Mansion. It was an absolutely fabulous experience!
The food was delicious, and the hospitality was wonderful. The innkeepers gave us super advise on restaurants and sites to see.

Our rooms were superb! We really enjoyed hearing about the interesting history of the house.
The views from the porches were something to see! Loved the total atmosphere.

This inn ranks at the top of my list! I will return.

This was the first time we stayed in a B&B and we had reservations about it. Reynolds Mansion changed our minds. Not only is it a beautiful home with rich history, Billy and Mike, the innkeepers, really make you feel like you are staying with friends. It is a warm and comfortable home. Each room has lots of character and is very clean. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Billy is an excellent cook and breakfast was amazing! Billy provided us with a variety of restaurants in the area he felt were the best. His recommendations were on point. We ended up staying an extra night since we were have such a great time. Anyone visiting the Asheville area should stay at Reynolds Mansion. It will make your visit that much more enjoyable. We will definitely be visiting Reynolds Mansion again when we are in Asheville.

I cannot say enough good things about the Reynolds Mansion and the owners, Billy and Mike. The house and grounds were absolutely wonderful and well kept. Not well kept in the sense of a sterile luxury hotel, but rather well kept in the sense that you were arriving at a friends home who took great pride in having a clean, inviting and most importantly comfortable place for you to relax. Billy and Mike were both extremely personable and fun. I enjoyed there stories of the long history of the mansion as well as the the history of their time with the house. Billy is an extraordinary cook, and the entire staff was friendly, warm and inviting. We intend to make many more trips to Asheville and cannot wait to see the Reynolds Mansion and the staff as we make the drive up the hill. It is a home away from home.

The location was perfect. The decor was lovely. The breakfast was AMAZING! Billy and Mike were excellent hosts. The mattress could have been a little softer to suit my taste (but that was also my opinion of some 4-5 star hotels I've stayed in), so I'd still recommend it to anyone.

Let me preface this review by letting those know who read it the type of person I am so they can appreciate the content of this review. I am a former US Army Officer that pays extremely close attention to detail, very analytical and honest individual. With that being said, I would now like to explain my experience at The Reynolds Mansion. This was a very special weekend for Betsy and I. The weekend we stayed at The Reynolds Mansion was the weekend I had been planning for months to propose to Betsy. So, prior to our arrival I conducted a lot of research on a number of B&B’s in the Asheville, NC area. Prior to our arrival, Billy (The Reynolds Mansion Innkeeper) was extremely helpful in helping me identify the perfect restaurants, hiking/scenery trails and other entertainment locations to take Betsy to throughout our engagement weekend. Everyone/everything from The Reynolds Mansion staff, to the excellent culinary delights they prepared for us in the mornings, to the advice offered on the restaurants and local entertainment as well as the elegant historical Reynolds Mansion itself far exceeded our expectations.

We most definitely look forward to visiting The Reynolds Mansion again in the future and they can most definitely count on us as being loyal customers anytime we plan on visiting the Asheville, NC area.

Sincerely,

Steve and Betsy
