“Not a good kid-friendly option for young children”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

I go to a conference every year for work - they always choose a really nice resort somewhere in the Continental U.S. And this year's selection (Grove Park Inn) is no exception. The historic lodge is interesting and beautiful and there is no shortage of restaurant seating with beatiful views. However, those attendees (like me) with young children have been sorely disappointed by our options. The spa is NOT for kids.

There are two pools - a small indoor one in a sports complex down a steep walk not too far from the hotel (block or two) and a larger outdoor one with open membership to Asheville generally that is not walkable (you have to walk down very steep curvy streets quite a distance with traffic). The shuttle driver cannot handle strollers - if you have two kids, good luck trying to hold the younger one and load your stroller in the shuttle. In fact, the elevator in the main lodge cannot even fit a "small" MacLauren double-stroller; it is too narrow (why they tried to put us there initially is beyond me). Rooms are not very large - standard hotel size (this is not the Coronado, Broadmoar, etc...) and not particularly fancy (not that kids care about the latter). No balconies - huge perk with kids. (They do, however, have great cribs and, apparently, there is no shortage.)

All of this is to say - if you were wondering whether to bring your young kids here, this is probably not the best choice.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience during the recent conference you attended. We are sorry that you felt disappointed with the options we have for the younger explores of the resort. In order to protect the tranquility of the spa we insist that all of the guests are over 18. While clothing is required in all co-ed areas, we still feel strongly that the atmosphere should be preserved for those over the age of 18. As you pointed out, we have two pools as well as kids programming through the Sports Complex but regret that you did not feel this was sufficient. Again, we appreciate all of the feedback we receive and will look for ways we can increase our offerings for all of our patrons.

I stayed at the Grove Park Inn recently and really enjoyed it. Although I had visited the Inn several times n past years, I had never stayed there. My room was in the original building which was nice. It had a lot of character and I think the original furniture that was made specifically for the hotel. However, the highlight of my stay was the Spa. It is amazing. They did not spare any expense in building it. Lots of rock walls and arches. Several pools and waterfalls. I enjoyed all of it plus had a massage which was wonderful. Although it was nice, not sure I would stay again unless I was going specifically to the Spa. There are so many nice places to stay in Asheville that I rarely stay in the same place twice.

Room Tip: If you want character, I would imagine the original building would be nice to stay in...but I'm...

Having stayed at the Grove Park Inn previously on several occasions, this stay was sub-par. The room was not up to cleanliness standards for this hotel. The Edison restaurant and bar staff was impersonal and inefficient and the menu was nothing special. A disappointment compared to the days prior to Omni's management.

The hotel and its staff were top notch, but the restaurants in the town of Asheville far exceed the quality offered at the hotel. Venture off site for good food or you will be disappointed. The spa is exceptional but very pricey.

Thank you for passing along your feedback. We are sorry that you felt our restaurants did not meet the bar you have set for the rest of Asheville. We are happy to offer many different styles of dining, from steaks to seafood to burgers (to bananas foster cheesecake), we work with local farmers to source almost all of our ingredients and are constantly altering our menus to showcase the best local bounty of the season. We appreciate your kind words towards our staff and are glad you enjoyed The Spa. We hope you will visit with us again someday and hopefully try out one of our many wonderful dining options.

My first experience was a feeling of wonder as we passed by on a tour shuttle. This beautiful establishment nestled in the hills surrounding downtown Asheville was a welcome sight. The front of the hotel, made entirely of huge rock walls, had many rocking chairs for guests and visitors to relax while enjoying the view. Inside, it had a lodge feel. Two massive fireplaces on either side of the lobby with rocking chairs in front of them, a bar in the far corner, massive leather chairs and couches to relax and partake of a drink or appetizer. Dimly lit and comfortable, we decided to stay and have a cocktail. We returned the next day for luncheon in the restaurant in the rear, experiencing the breathtaking view of the Smoky Mountains while eating a delicious Lobster Cobb salad. It was a little expensive for us, but well worth the experience!

Second time I've stayed here, and love this hotel. The beauty, location, service are worth every time. I didn't use fitness center this trip, but wish I had. Took my mom as special treat and she loved every minute. Drinks on the deck at sunset are special. Definitely the place to stay if you're exploring Asheville.
