Fort Warren is full of dark passageways, hidden staircases, and secret rooms that visitors can explore on their own. Once you hear the story of the Lady in Black, you'll expect to see her around every corner! The interpreters are friendly, but not intrusive. Gorgeous views of the harbour from here, including Boston Light. A great family outing. Once you get to the island, there's no fee to explore, but you need a boat or a ferry ride to get there.

This was an incredible day! After a 45 minute ferry ride, we arrived at the island in the morning and spend about two hours exploring. My favorite aspect was the freedom to explore. As long as an area was not blocked off, you could explore there! Bring a flashlight, because youll need it! Tons of fun and great pictures!

we went to Georges Island last weekend and had a really great time. The ferry was comfortable and relaxing and the captain delivered interesting, historical commentary along the way. we walked through the visitor center at the dock to learn the history of Fort Warren which is situated on Georges island (very informative) and then explored the fort both inside and along the ramparts. The views of Boston and the other harbor islands are wonderful and the fort itself was interesting. Kids would really enjoy the experience.
there are loads of paths to follow, picnic spots and many tables at visitors' disposal; it would be a great place for a family picnic, reunion, get-together. there is also a snack bar near the visitor center. Many families on the ferry had brought along picnic provisions.
The ferry is inexpensive and for the fee you can spend the day as you wish on either Spectacle (which has a beach with lifeguard)and/or Georges Island. there are also options to explore the other harbor islands. if you want to take it easy relaxing in a chair, explore some history, enjoy a harbor cruise or really tire out your children, check out the Boston Harbor Ferry office on Rose Kennedy Greenway near Long Wharf along the Harbor walk.

Georges Island is a great little day trip. My favorite part was taking the ferry there. I have always loved the fort at Castle Island, however, you may only access the fort during a guided tour on limited days. At GI you have the freedom to roam free and explore the fort and the grounds. Guided tours are offered but we opted to do our own thing. You are supplied a map at the visitors booth and you are good to go from there. My husband had lunch at rita's cafe and I brought my own. The selection was pretty good. When we go again I may leave my lunch at home. We spent a total of $40 for the day. This included lunch and the ferry tickets. Overall we both had a fun day exploring our own city. I highly recommend if you have never been.

We took the boat to George's Island via Spectacle Island. It was about a 50 minute trip with the stop at spectacle. Informative narration was provided during the trip out which I highly enjoyed. We didn't do much exploring, instead choosing to take advantage of the lounge chairs and watching the boats go by.
Know that there is no swimming allowed on this island- they actually recommend to not go on the beaches either as this island hasn't been cleaned.
