Don't miss the harbor islands, especially if you are avisitor to Boston. This island has an awesome old granite fort (Fort Warren) which was built in the 1800s. You can access almost the whole complex inside and out. It's full of hidden passages, dark staircases, underground barracks with gun ports that open to ocean views. From the top WWII era observation towers there is a panoramic view of the adjacent islands and the harbor. Bring a flashlight and explore! We live in the area and spend a lot of time on the water. This is where we bring out of town guests to see a part of historic Boston that many people miss. Access is easy with the Boston Harbor ferry system from downtown and umass... check the schedule boats run all day most days in the summer.

I encourage anyone who visits Boston during the summer time to visit Fort Warren. You can spend an entire day there, especially when they have special events going on. You will see a civil war era fort that was used until the 50's. Bring a flashlight for the tunnels underneath the fort, they are pitch black.

Fort Warren is located on Georges Island in the Boston Harbor Islands. The ferry ride from Boston to Georges Island was about 30 min and provided some amazing views of Boston and the surrounding areas. The fort itself is a former Civil War fort that was used for various purposes throughout its existence. Now the fort is almost completely open to the public. You can walk through most of the fort, including the old barracks, down dark and narrow passages, climb tall, winding staircases, walk along the battlements, and everywhere in between. The top of the fort provides some amazing views of the Boston area and the other harbor islands. There’s a lot to do and see here. We spent about 2 hours exploring the fort, but you could easily make a day of it if you wanted to have a picnic and relax and enjoy the views. We had a lot of fun exploring the fort and would recommend it to anyone interested in history or just interested in getting away for a day and visiting a beautiful harbor island.
