You coud literally spend hours exploring this island! Went here in the beginning of June for a couple hours my boyfriend has never been there before I knew he would enjoy it. We took the 10AM ferry from Boston (had a beer) which was enjoyable it was beautiful beautiful beautiful out. The ferry ride to George's Island is guided and informational.

You can do a guided tour of fort warren and the grounds or you can do your own thing like we did. There's a ton of information about fort warren

Definitely bring a flashlight and a good pair of walking shoes. We look froward to returning with our families in the next couple months!

Don't miss the harbor islands, especially if you are avisitor to Boston. This island has an awesome old granite fort (Fort Warren) which was built in the 1800s. You can access almost the whole complex inside and out. It's full of hidden passages, dark staircases, underground barracks with gun ports that open to ocean views. From the top WWII era observation towers there is a panoramic view of the adjacent islands and the harbor. Bring a flashlight and explore! We live in the area and spend a lot of time on the water. This is where we bring out of town guests to see a part of historic Boston that many people miss. Access is easy with the Boston Harbor ferry system from downtown and umass... check the schedule boats run all day most days in the summer.

I encourage anyone who visits Boston during the summer time to visit Fort Warren. You can spend an entire day there, especially when they have special events going on. You will see a civil war era fort that was used until the 50's. Bring a flashlight for the tunnels underneath the fort, they are pitch black.
